These Things I've Said: A Book of Poetry, Musings & Lyrics is a time capsule collection of lyrics and poetry spanning Brad W. Cox's quarter-century career in the music industry and arts. From Skitzo Calypso, We Love the Underground, Veteran Avenue, Children of the Program, Mouthful of Graffiti and a handful of side projects, musician, songwriter, author and podcaster, Cox, has compiled a literary Ark for his fans and followers to open as often and cautionary as necessary.

“Get lost in artistic catharsis. This is lyrical, poetic, metaphorical bliss.”
Gary J. Holmes, Skitzo Calypso & We Love the Underground

“Creative powerhouse Brad Cox is, first and foremost, a prolific songwriter. Always inspiring and incisive, ‘These Things I’ve Said’ is the definitive lyrical volume by one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s hardest-working musicians from last quarter century.”
Derrick Credito, author of The Year of the Tsunami

“I’ve been listening to Brad’s music for years, hearing these words layered in harmonies and placed within a soundscape of aggressive guitars and bombastic drums. This book presents that content in a new context, showcasing the fact that he’s not only an accomplished vocalist and performer, but also a thoughtful lyricist and talented writer. Fans of his novels are already aware of this. I hope this project will draw them into the music, and I hope fans of his musical projects dive deeper into the lyrics and ideas explored here.”
– Tony Correlli, Deep End Studio

"What happens when a music major and a journalism major write music together? An experience that takes you on a journey of emotion and introspection that reaches to the depths of thought, both to the individual and society. Cox’s lyrical mastery pushes the mirror in front of the audience so it’s possible to find connections to our shared experiences, and the nostalgia and struggle of life’s memories."
Patrick Sise, Master of Music in Classical Guitar Performance and Pedagogy, Peabody Institute.

In a Nutshell:

My rock n' roll dream started when I was about 16-years-young. After releasing 13 full length albums, under various monikers and aliases, I wanted to expand my creative horizons and solder some of my manic metal musical musings together with a fictional book. Years of scribbling out lyrics, like a lawn gnome on a mushroom, made me quite versed in the art of wordplay and how to communicate through writing -- yes, my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek.

For those of you who don't know me, I can assure you, I won't allow myself to be taken too seriously. I love sea lions, rock n' roll, fall weather and suds with my friends -- oh, and a good story!

I attended Towson University and emerged with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism. Again, writing. So, to this day, I continue to tell the tale of a conflicted and often tortured spirit, bound by the conventions of a hypnotized society; always longing to fly, but often settling for McDonald's french fries and a hot fudge sundae and content to forget it all.

Children of the Program is my wings. I hope to someday find the courage to leave some of my hang-ups in a very dark place, maybe even a closet [sorry] - never to be opened again.

For now, this is my Ark.

Enter, if you dare...

Love,

Brad W. Cox

Brad Cox a name that never remains inactive for long or never becoming stagnant. He’s someone that keeps reinventing himself time and time again. His poetry is so intimate and self- revealing, full of self- reflection expressing attitude and defining his style. If you’ve actively been apart of the Baltimore Local Music Scene the least 25 years, you’re familiar with his diverse body of work as a musician, writer, podcaster. author an much more … There are endless things to say about the articulate, complex emotional resonance of the poems and lyrics in this book. His poems exhibit a wide expanse of white space to frame powerful linguistic fragments, which are complete in their vivid imagery yet leave room for personal interpretation. I found myself weeping at times, the range of emotions are vast and swallowing. Though the little rifts in language that these poems make visible, The themes are familiar , melancholy and lightened with even some unexpected humor. There’s a strong overlap between his poetry and his music. His poems are certainly indeed powerfully relatable, honest, heartwarming, beautifully constructed, keenly observed, personable and his his drive to keep making music and sharing it with the world is impressive by far. His creative approaches are important to him by going to great lengths to keep it lively. I’m intrigued by the depths of this book where truly original beautiful collections of art have flourished. Bonus : The Shadow Gallery A chapter dedicated to the artists of Baltimore that will all love, know an appropriate. 🎨❤️

In “These Things I’ve Said,” Brad Cox encapsulates his two and a half decade music career with honest, heartfelt chapters that recapture the excitement and energy of forming Skitzo Calypso in Los Angeles. The book presents a series of vignettes that reveal personable, relatable stories of obstacles overcome. The road is rocky at times, and Cox’s compelling memoir culminates with a long-running creative journey that includes a massive catalog of genre-bending music, and a storied history of sharing the stage with some of rock’s biggest names. Readers of this book will undoubtedly find power and intrigue in Cox’s masterful lyrics and storytelling finesse. From the decadence and debauchery of the Sunset Strip to the more sober apexes of musical success in his Central Maryland hometown, Brad Cox lays it all bare in this relatable, honest account of one man’s drive to make music and share it with the world. Brad Cox gives hope to the next generation of rock musicians, and indeed players and writers in any genre, who might doubt whether they can forge a path forward in an ever-changing music industry. Cox shows the reader, in a very open and forthright manner, how he has managed to cut through the noise and make his mark. This “open book” of a lyrical memoir is a must read for anyone who craves West Coast-flavored rock & roll that is also largely the product of an East Coast music scene. Though Maryland is a small state, it is where native son Brad Cox has cultivated his Grand Canyon-sized catalog — and lived to tell about his lifelong adventures in rock & roll.

These Things I’ve Said is a profound look into the psyche of creative and prolific musician/writer Brad W. Cox. The text offers the reader a rare opportunity to observe a lifetime of creation in a single source - allowing you to identify common threads, themes, development, and resolution within a diverse body of work. Whether undeniably specific, or working with metaphor and simile, Cox never shies away from difficult subject matter. Perhaps most compelling is the author’s ability to not only look outward, to the world beyond, but to turn the lens on himself and shine a light within.
