Does their compass really point to true love?

Jonah Montgomery thought he had it all, an Army career he loved, Team Panther the men he’d bonded with as brothers, and, Matt, the man who owned his heart. But under the shadow of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, everything fell apart when Matt was captured in Afghanistan. It’s taken him five years to reinvent himself and to build a new life as country music’s singing soldier. All he needs and wants is his music and his sniper rifle, there’s no longer any room in his life for matters of the heart.

It was official PTSD sucked, it caused Matt Garrett to make the biggest mistake of his life. He shut down when he should have opened up, and he ran from Jonah when he should have talked to him instead. By the time he figured out which way was up, too much time had passed to fix the wrongs between him and the only man he’s ever loved. He learned to suck it up and to figure out how this living thing worked without Jonah at his side.

Now five years later a terrorist seeking revenge has come for Jonah. Will Matt take the opportunity a sniper’s bullet provides? Can Team Panther find their missing brother in time? Will Matt and Jonah stand together or will the love they still have for each other falter under the weight of revenge?

Jonah’s Compass is book one in the Delta Force Team Panther series by Annabella Stone. This is my very first book by this author. It is a MM romantic suspense. I randomly found this book while scrolling and was intrigued by the blurb.

Jonah Montgomery and Matt Garrett first met when Jonah was trying out for a position as sniper on the special ops Team Panther. They both felt the pull immediately but both worked hard at denying it. The military position at that time was don’t ask, don’t tell. They eventually gave in and fell in love, spending five years in a committed, secret relationship. Until Matt was captured. After his rescue, Matt was struggling and finally left. Now five years later, with the entire team out of the military, Matt and Jonah haven’t seen each other since Matt left. Jonah, who always had amazing musical skills, is a country music artist. But a terrorist wanting revenge tries to take Jonah out sending Matt to his bed side with hopes of a second chance.

Yes, that’s a lot of information. And that’s just in the first twenty percent! Things really started out fast and furious with this book and I realize she had a lot of ground to cover to bring us to the present but it was just a little confusing skipping so fast through their history. There weren’t any labels, letting us know how many years were being skipped. We just had to kind of stop and pause to figure it out. But it was all necessary to get to present time.

I really loved Matt and Jonah together. And since this is the first book of the series, the author took time to introduce us to the rest of the team with little snippets to intrigue us for their own books. The team reunites to figure out what is going on with the attempt on Jonah’s life which leads to so much more.

This was fast paced, steamy and also sweet. There were a LOT of details, though. A lot of places and names when they were out of the country that after awhile got a bit confusing and I skimmed a little bit. Matt and Jonah’s story as a couple has a HEA but part of the ongoing story line will continue in the next book with a new couple which will be Steele and Kalon’s book, Tied Up in Steele.

The 2nd edition provides new, sexier covers and editing corrections, but no new content except Forward material.

I absolutely love Jonah and Matt. I love every MC when I'm reading their book, but Jonah and Matt are special.
I've read this book 4-5 times now. It never gets old. The relationship between Jonah and Matt is wonderful. The dynamics with the rest of their team are engaging and fun. I am starting the full series again. and I fully expect it to be just as amazing as the first 3-4 times I read it...

    What makes it so wonderful:
You are not bogged down with pages and chapters of angst once Jonah and Matt reconnect. They put it out there and it's done - on with the mission. So refreshing.
These are men on a mission: You are not bogged down with too much time spent 'world building'; maybe because of the topic and the times, much isn't needed. But the way the author provided the back story was perfect.
The story builds and continues in the following books. And also into the side Series Tags of Honor. Your heart will break and rejoice for each the Panthers as their stories unfold. With I think the most heartbreaking being A Panther Christmas. Probably because it sets up Griff's story and Annabella hasn't gotten it out yet....

Like the other reviewer: This is my 2nd review on this book. I posted one on the first edition also. Based on what I remember, it had some unfairly harsh reviews due to editing. If you passed on this book, and this series, due to those reviews - you should give it chance. Any inconsistancies I saw, I put down to the fact that Annabella Stone is not a USA native from the great state of Texas, same as I did for the author from Sidney, and the ones from the UK. I've even seen errors from long established American authors - it happens. Move on and don't nit pick if it's not required.

I didn't really want n to read this, but wanted to read second book. I read Zeno first and realized this book was the first. So I read it. It was such a great story, I just loved all the characters except Sarah, which I don't get why she was never asked why she kept Jonah away from Jason. Hmmmm.
Jonah and Matt were so real, their love was so amazing and you felt everything. So glad they met back up, it was really sad that they lost 5yrs. I hope they get married.
Would really recommend this series and all the others.

An excellent start to the series, with interesting characters. The love story between Jonah and Matt is tense, complicated and deep. It makes clear to us that the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” period in the military was extremely painful for gay men. And the Afghanistan action scenes and alphabet agencies participation makes clear that civilians have no clue as to what is really going on under the surface.
Jonah as a country singer and ex soldier is an original character and overall, made this story fly. Kudos too for the cover, which is one of the very best I have seen.

Really nice story. I like everything army related:) I really enjoyed reading the book. What I didn't like were the many different acronyms I never heard before or weren't familiar with and had to google every time 🙈 that been driving me bonkers. I added a note to each one for the next time reading that book so I won't have to Google them anymore

5.0 out of 5 stars what about Sarah?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2024
This books is fantastic! My only gripe is that Sarah prevented Jason from reaching out to Jonah and she slept with Dom and caused his phone to go missing which painted him as a traitor and instead of Jonah taking her to task for all of that he lets her scream at him for coming out about Matt in public. It’s annoying.
