A Donnybrook Affair Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Lemuel Plant is a hard-up private investigator working out of a shabby downtown office. He's ready to quit, and is determined that his next case will be his last.
Plant is visited by the beautiful Florence Joiner, who wants to collect evidence against her husband, who she alleges is having an affair with his secretary.
On the job, Plant follows Harold Joiner, the managing partner of a successful firm. But he also follows his client, which leads him to the affluent suburb of Donnybrook and its country club. There, Plant discovers there's more to the story than what she disclosed
Intrigue, a compelling plot, and the salacious going-on between the well-heeled people of Donnybrook, make this a must-read for lovers of vintage detective fiction.

The Donnybrook Affair by Robert E. Learns was fantastic. It was really hard to put down. It is the story of a down-on-his-luck private detective named Lemuel Plant. Mr. Plant may not have many clients, but he has things like morals, scruples, and and an innate intelligence.
A gorgeous woman hires him to prove her older, wealthy husband is cheating in her. Lemuel follows the trail and gets far more than he bargained for.
    Do not miss this one!

This book is set in a time before computers and cellphones, before technology took over. It reminded me a lot of the old movies like Dial M for Murder or Out of the Past. I’m not a heavy reader in the crime/mystery genres, but this book was a great page turner. It was a bit fun to go back to the old days when people had to literally run down their leads on a case instead of doing research behind a desk on a computer. Lem is a private investigator hired by a socialite who wants to prove her husband is cheating on her so she can divorce him and get a nice payday out of it. Lem decides to take the case, because he wants to just retire out of his dingy office. But there are a lot of twists and turns to this one, and one was a major surprise to me.

For private detective fans, this is a good read with a good cast of characters. Lem is such a great character, I hope he pops up in another book down the road.

Kearns has created a likable character in Lemuel Plant- a regular Joe you want to cheer on! I loved the build up to a surprising ending and the great dialogue between his protagonist and all the other very colorful characters! Another great read. Well done

This is a nice private eye story set in an undisclosed time frame when life was without today's technology. Our narrator, Lemuel Plant, the private detective, can be instantly seen with the mind's eye and the reader is transported with ease.

I enjoyed the read, nothing too out of the ordinary in such a story, which may have led to my complacency because I was pleasantly blindsided with the twist!

This novel is a perfect weekend read.

I'm a fan of Kearns and his writing. This book didn't disappoint and stays true to the style of a classic detective story. I enjoyed this novel and it was a quick read for me.
