The Ghost Ring: Welcome to Wilder House Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 101 ratings

#1 Best Seller on Amazon • 2024 Readers’ Favorite Gold Medal Winner in Young Adult Paranormal Fiction * Simon Moody’s mom inherits her wealthy Uncle Edmund’s estate, giving them more than enough money to pay all four years of Simon’s upcoming college tuition. The only problem is, they have to leave Brooklyn, move to the little town of Caligo Falls, and make Wilder House, the infamous Victorian mansion built by Edmund’s grandfather in 1905, their new home. They’ve also inherited a mysterious caretaker named Harrington, and a punctual but melancholy cook, Mrs. Morley.

Edmund Wilder leaves Simon a mysterious ring, along with a cryptic note, a quote from Hamlet. There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Simon and his new friend Clara Barley soon find themselves entangled in the unfathomable, sometimes terrifying, sometimes heartbreaking mysteries of Wilder House.

Ammaarah Seboa, Readers' Favorite * 5 stars
I thoroughly enjoyed The Ghost Ring by Tom Hoffman. This book took me back to my childhood and endless love for mystical things. The novel is set at a moderate pace and doesn't allow for plot holes. I love how Tom incorporated Greek mythology into the storyline. The characters Tom created were relatable, and the situations and decisions they found themselves in were realistic. Simon's feelings were refreshing; these types of protagonists usually fear the unknown, but that's not the case with young Simon. He approached his new situation with a mind of logic and curiosity. I was so wrapped up in the story that it felt like I was watching a movie. I am dying for more!

K.C. Finn, Readers' Favorite * 5 stars
Tom Hoffman knows how to pitch a powerful mystical tale to his YA audience, and he keeps them on the edge of their seats from cover to cover as the various ghostly mysteries and hidden secrets of Wilder House unfold throughout this well-written and atmospheric novel. One of the things I especially enjoyed about the story was how introspective it is in revealing Simon's character to us and crafting a poignant story arc of a displaced young man discovering who he is and the kind of adult he'll grow into based on the challenges he faces. Simon's central relationship with his new friend Clara is rich in realistic teen dialogue, amusing asides, and deeper emotional moments that keep you just as invested in their journey together as in the overall mystery plot. I would not hesitate to recommend
The Ghost Ring for fans of intricately penned paranormal adventures, heartfelt YA characters, and plenty of Victorian atmosphere.

A young hero develops an entirely new appreciation for the afterlife in the storyline of Tom Hoffman's mystery novel. Hoffman's characters are a delight to read in how he injects either a smidge of humor or a dash of mystery into each of them. His development of Simon's character is in keeping with what I would expect of a youth, with curiosity overriding caution in several cases and the growing romantic arc he develops with Clara. The best part of this story is how the subplots consist of mysteries that require being solved in a particular order. This builds suspense and guarantees a gripping conclusion. Hoffman deserves plaudits for his innate storytelling approach, which transformed
The Ghost Ring from a paranormal mystery into a delightfully engaging reading experience that captivated me to the end.

Cecelia Hopkins, Readers' Favorite * 5 stars
The Ghost Ring by Tom Hoffman is an eminently readable coming-of-age fantasy. I enjoyed the wish-fulfillment aspects of the plot as the single-parent Moody family was granted wealth beyond their wildest expectations. I felt frissons of fear as Simon sensed the presence of ghosts but was vastly assured when he began to defuse the situation with Clara's support. There was a sense of satisfaction as wrongs were righted, and I felt Simon was a deserving candidate. I enjoyed the humor embedded in the point of view of different characters represented throughout the narrative. Simon was endearing with his adolescent fear of being "weird" when asserting his wishes or expressing himself. Clara was refreshingly open to friendship, and I liked how she negotiated Simon's interest. The Ghost Ring by Tom Hoffman combined mythic and morality tale elements with a teenage voice to create an enchanting young adult novel.

Delene Vrey, Readers' Favorite * 5 stars
The Ghost Ring by Tom Hoffman is a good, clean, somewhat suspenseful mystery. It has elements to enthrall young adult readers. The book is written in great taste and, with some parental guidance, will provide a good reading experience to readers in high school. The prospective reader should be aware of references to murder, suicide, and drowning. This is not a horror story with gory images or gratuitous violence. What I liked was how the author captured the emotions of Simon and Clara and how they grew. Simon realizes that happiness can be found somewhere you do not want to go, and Clara learns that parents were children once and we can learn from each other's lives. The most important theme for me was that money does not make a person happy. It makes many things easier, but you can be rich without ostentatiously flaunting it. Simon and his mother kept their humble dispositions, and their inheritance did not change them. The mythical origins of the Shadow Ring are a great way of getting younger readers interested in the classics and paving the way for more stories in the same spirit.

A veteran award winning author of 19 thrilling young adult and middle grade adventures, Tom Hoffman received a B.S. in psychology from Georgetown University and a B.A. from the now-defunct Oregon College of Art. He has lived in Alaska with his wife Alexis since 1973. They have two adult children and four amazing grandchildren. Tom was a graphic designer and artist for over 35 years. Redirecting his imagination from art to writing, he wrote his first novel, The Eleventh Ring, at age 63. He recently completed The Ghost Ring: The Haunting of Caligo Farm, a character based paranormal mystery. The Translucent Boy and the Girl Who Saw Him was a semi-finalist in the 2020 BookLife Prize Award (Publishers Weekly)

Hoffman's books provide an alternate way to view the world we live in. To see magic as science we don’t understand, to see all life as a single force, all equally precious, no matter the form. A world where violence is not necessary, a world where the protagonists are changed forever by their difficult choices, by their own sacrifices. A world of empathy, kindness, and love. And of course, ten foot tall ancient robotic rabbits and gigantic carnivorous centipedes living on post apocalyptic planets!

"The hair-raising situations his heroes find themselves in on different planes of existence are among the most imaginative I have read in contemporary literature." –Rea Nolan Martin, author Mystic Tea, Sunnyside Up, The Anesthesia Game, et al.

“An epic that hits all the perfect notes of science, magic, and sweetness.”

–Kirkus Review of The Eleventh Ring

“An endlessly stimulating sequel that caters to intellectually fearless readers.”

–Kirkus Review of The Thirteenth Monk

It isn’t that I couldn’t put the book down, I just didn’t want to. I was up almost all night reading, (I am a slow reader, I read every word in a sentence).
I can’t tell other readers what I liked about ‘The Ghost Ring’, I just did.
The story is different, which helps hold my interest. The author is good. He writes without using a lot of ‘that’s’.
After reading this book, I was surprised, I had two other books by him. They are next on my list..
I follow authors, but many I ignore. Mr. Hoffman is different. I hope to enjoy all his stories.

A woman and her son who are barely scraping by inherit an estate and a fortune, but there are conditions. The young man also inherits a ring & a ring that lets him see ghosts. A very special romance is also in the cards.

I would have absolutely ADORED this book when I was younger. I’m old as dirt now and still enjoyed it immensely!

It’s the rags to riches, cluttered great-aunt’s attic to pilfer thru that all kids dream of. Life changing, world encompassing adventure all found in the comfort of a good book.

I heartily endorse this series to any parents with their own little Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Mummy loving offspring.

Very interesting storyline -- multifaceted and not always what you expect. There's humor as well. Editor should have caught a few things; but nothing that detracts. Recommend for tweens and those who enjoy ya books.
