The Fleeting Target: A night-time mission to assassinate the enemy... (Spitfire Mavericks Thrillers Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 963 ratings

Another terrifying fight in the skies for the Maverick Squadron! For fans of Derek Robinson, James Holland, Frank Barnard and Jack Higgins.

Who is leaking secrets to the enemy…?

1941

Flying Officer Angus Mackennelly is flying over Northern France when his tank is holed and he’s forced to crash-land.

Luckily, he is picked up by the French Resistance before the enemy can get to him and, after a tense few days moving between safe houses, he escapes back to Blighty.

Reunited with his squadron, Angus expects to return to flying duties. However, Squadron Leader Bentley informs him that he’s not going to be flying sorties. He is singled out to lead a top-secret mission.

The special mission is to conduct a low flying night operation with six blacked out Spitfires to strafe a convoy carrying a top general from the German High Command and assassinate him.

Training quickly commences but a spate of unexpected enemy fighter attacks leads the team to suspect that a spy is trying to leak details of the upcoming mission to the Germans.

Angus is put on the case to squirrel out the informer and protect the rest of the men from the enemy within.

Will Angus succeed in his secret mission? Can he identify the mole?

Or will the lives of all the men in Maverick Squadron be compromised…?

THE FLEETING TARGET is the third book in the Spitfire Mavericks Thrillers series: action-packed aviation adventures set during the second world war and featuring a team of vigilante pilots.

D.R. Bailey was raised in a family of bibliophiles. From an early age, he developed eclectic tastes in fiction including Sci-Fi, Romance, Crime, and the Classics. Some of his favourite authors are still Gerald Durrell, Jane Austen, Peter James, Ellis Peters, and Isaac Asimov. He began his writing journey at the age of eleven with a fictional story about his toy teddy bear clan. To date, he has published four major fictional series. Apart from writing, Bailey has engaged in several different careers and says that these life experiences have all contributed greatly to his penchant for storytelling.

Bailey’s most successful series is his WW2 Aviation Thriller, The Spitfire Mavericks, published by Sapere Books. It features spies, thrilling action-packed aerial combat, romance, and more. The series features a maverick crew of pilots thrown out from every squadron. The hero of the hour, Flying Officer Angus Mackennelly, endeavours to save the day in a series of thrilling adventures. The series has been a best seller on multiple Amazon lists in several countries and still rides high in the charts.

Following the success of the Mavericks series, Bailey has now written another WW2 Aviation Thriller series also published by Sapere Books, The Secret Sirens. The series poses the fictional question of what if women flew into combat with the RAF in WW2. The series features exciting secret missions by the Sirens squadron, spies, intrigue and more. Strong female leads combine with some great storylines to bring the reader an adventure to keep the pages turning.

Bailey has also penned and independently published five full-length crime novels in the DI Gallway series which is a genre he is particularly fond of. The stories contain a heady mix of crime, suspense, humour, steamy romance and much more. Bailey has also tackled some controversial and topical subjects surrounding the Catholic Church. The stories are set in Ireland, and Bailey confesses to having a great affection for the Irish.

Bailey has also independently published The Innocent Killing, and four other books in a Legal Drama series featuring a fictional barrister in Dublin called Bernadette Mackenna. This new series is a steamy spicy mix of legal drama with a strong element of same-sex romance.

The Spitfire Mavericks, The Secret Sirens, DI Gallway Investigates, and Bernadette Mackenna Investigates will hopefully continue for many more books to come. Bailey pledges to continue writing for as long as he can. Bailey is dedicated to excellence and writes with passion but at the same time tries to make his words accessible to those of all persuasions, sometimes shocking perhaps, but never dull.

Spitfire pilots, secret mission, hero escapes after being shot down, spies.
What else could the reader want for a rollicking wartime novel.
    Good read, recommend.

As I have stated before, I began reading this series with doubt - it’s all gone! Bailey keeps hitting it out of the park!

The military part of the story is credible the relationships believable but the romantic drama not so much. All that said I will read the next book and hope it focuses more on the military operations as I have enjoyed the read.

This the third book in the series, and I am so glad that there is going to be a fourth. I really miss the characters, now that I have finished the book and I can't wait to see what their future holds... There is plenty of exciting action in this story and it is very reminiscent of the early 1940s - it has obviously been well researched. As well as the tense flying scenes, there is also some romance and humour, lots to keep me interested. I hope that book 4 comes out soon!

This is not a war time story! It's a love story and not a very good one.
The scenario is just unbelievable to even suggest it could have taken place on a military wartime base is laughable.
The author says he has done research but I'm afraid he missed the boat! The mission and the flying is not possible!!!
Give this series a miss, not worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant tale

A great read, a great series. I enjoyed this book immensely, the characters are well written into the fabric of the story. It might be fiction but, as the author rightly says, there might be some truth in there somewhere. There is no doubt the Nazis tried to produce an atomic bomb. Many other authors have written around this but if fact.
All that aside, it is an excellent read, anyone who likes ww2 raf stories will enjoy this.
I cannot wait for the next instalment.
