- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2010This book grabbed me in the first page; this is a fast moving yet deeply touching book that `links' us with some of our most basic instincts. 'Linked' will be absolutely enjoyed by everyone - whether you read SciFi, Fantasy, Adventure or Drama. Alex Zarate `nailed' the characters - I can't wait for book 2!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2018What begins as an abusive relationship and makes you think something is going to come back from the dead doesn’t turn out the way your think. Don’t count on second guessing Zarate’s imagination or his unique story telling expertise. This tale, like a cat jumping with grace, leaps from a dark beginning into a springy jaunt about a boy named Tommy who lost his father and his mother thinks maybe he could use a pet. And he’s been wearing her down and then one day the pet finds him. What follows is a page turning ride somewhere in between Cat Scratch Fever and Don’t Pay The ferry Man.
And it’s not just a story of a boy and a pet. It’s about being bullied and needing a friend. It’s about abused animals and those older kids that aren’t from your neighborhood but they show up in your front yard anyway. It’s about a mother who lost her husband and is surrounded by friends and some of them keep pushing her to get out there and replace her husband. And she feels he can’t be replaced so she’s stuck and what do you do with that? You do the best you can with the cards you’ve been dealt.
In the background, like bad elevator music you can’t turn off and it sticks in your head, in the shadows and the dark places where you may have to squint to see what’s going, is Hap. He’s the kind of loner you don’t want to meet even on a sunny day. But we’re given enough information to understand his motive. He wants to make things right with people that do things wrong.
It’s the confluence of these two meandering rivers that make you keep turning pages even when you have stuff to do, maybe some of its even important. Because you want to find out what happens next. This book does what good books do; they entertain and make you forget about things even if it’s only gravity.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2010This book is both exciting and frightening. If asked to compare, I would say it is similar in story and tone to the old Twilight Zone plots. There is so much out there that we don't understand - who can say unequivocally that something is impossible?
The characters are true to life with good and bad motivations. What really jumped out at me from the book was how we are all truly "linked."
