Rachel's Risk: A Christian Romance (A Sinclair Island Christian Horse Romance Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

Set to the beat of thundering hooves, bitter atheism meets powerful Christian love in this second chance romance.

After eighteen years, Rachel is still seeking revenge for the death of her husband, whose murderer was never caught.
Then she reads about the Pearls, a herd of palomino horses running wild on uninhabited Cuddie Island and takes a three month sabbatical from teaching biology to research the beautiful animals.

While staying on neighboring Sinclair Island, she meets Gordon, co-author of the book that set her imagination on fire and last of the lighthouse keepers on Cuddie Island. When he takes her to see the Pearls, she becomes smitten not only with the stunning horses, but also with him.

As they work closely with the Pearls, their love for the feisty horses leads to them to deep feelings for each other. Yet Rachel knows her atheism is a barrier to any lasting relationship and pretends to be Christian. But the closer they become, the harder it is to risk disclosing the truth.

How will Gordon react when he discovers she’s been deceiving him?

Will Rachel be forced to leave the one man whose love can save her?

Horses captivated Hilary as a seven-year-old. Decades later, they still do. When her father replaced the family television with a book allowance for her and her brother, he was hoping they’d buy the classics. Hilary bought books on horses.

Every spare moment was spent in the attic, losing herself in the enchanting worlds of Ruby Ferguson’s Jill Books and the complete series of Flicka by Mary O’Hara, among others. She also purchased multiple tomes on horse care and obsessed about owning a pony.

Hilary also managed to almost fail English in school – somewhat unusual training for a future best selling author.

Happily, her childhood dreams were realized, and she has owned many horses. Her current equine soulmate, Cruz Bay, is a homebred Thoroughbred Welsh Cob cross. She competes with him in dressage and aspires to joining The Century Club one day, where the combined ages of horse and owner add up to one hundred!

Hilary’s Christian faith was growing at the same time as her riding skills improved and she rediscovered the ultimate goal: getting to Heaven. Her writing combines the beauty of horses with the truth of the Gospel and she hopes her books will encourage readers to join her in striving for that goal.

A note for readers of her Catholic books: The traditional Latin Mass is not available where she lives, so Hilary attends the Novus Ordo Mass at her local parish church, which is blessed with three holy priests who celebrate it with reverent devotion.

I really enjoyed reading this beautiful story of faith and redemption. Getting to know all these very special people over the course of reading the Sinclair Island and Hilton Head books is truly a joy, as they really do support each other in times of need, and also in times of celebration. And horses play a big part in their lives; who can resist that? Lots of adventures and romance here, with Rachel and Gordon, revealing that you’re never too old to experience something new, and so worthwhile.

This book is about lost Christian faith and wild horses. Rachael is a biologist and interested in the horses on the island. Gordon loves birds and has written a book. The story takes us from Rachael who is looking for revenge for her husband's death. She spends her time near the Lighthouse watching the ponies.
The story winds around the hurricane, her search for both peace and revenge which is a difficult combination. Gordon try's his best to lead her to God. He has issues of his own.
Saving the horses is a large part of her guidance to the Lord. To say too much would be giving away the story line. You really need to get/read this book.
All of Hillary's books are so thoughtful and can keep you wanting more.

Wonderful rendition of the struggle to submit 100% to the Lord. The doubts and disappointments that are part of Christian life that can actually make us stronger with the help of God and strong Christian friends. The characters are so real, I wish I could meet them. May God continue to bless Ms. Walker's ministry to teach and challenge her readers to grow in Christ!

I so enjoyed Rachel's journey from atheism to faith. There were so many twists and turns as she made her way to God,. It was a truly bumpy journey. Not to mention the tribulations of falling in love. The wild horses gave the story an extra dimension that made it gallop along. Brilliant!

This is my voluntary review of a copy I received from the author.

There weren't many overt romantic gestures in the story, unless you count Gordon leading Rachel to the saving knowledge of Christ. There are a few times when misunderstandings split them up. She's stubborn, insecure, and defensive. He's steady but not always clear in his wording.

The other part of the story was fascinating and action-packed. It involved rescuing wild horses and a bit on their care and handling.

    I really enjoyed the story.

A well written story about a horse and woman and faith. The author has the handle and writing a story that is great to read.
