About the author

Karen Musser Nortman, after previous incarnations as a secondary social studies teacher (22 years) and a test developer (18 years), returned to her childhood dream of writing mysteries. Her first series, The Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries, sprouted from numerous camping trips in Iowa and through at least 24 other states. The Frannie Shoemaker Mysteries center around a group of retirees who camp together and sometimes stumble over dead bodies. Six of the books have been designated IndieBRAG medallion honorees and three have been finalists in Chanticleer CLUE and Mystery and Mayhem contests. Most of the books are based on actual campgrounds.
Karen has two other series. The Time Travel Trailer series follows the adventures of Lynne McBriar who buys a vintage camper that turns out to be a time portal. The first in the series, by the same name, was the 2015 category winner in the Chanticleer Paranormal contest. The Mystery Sisters is a new series involving two seventy-something sisters who travel the country in a 1950 Studebaker, argue, annoy their relatives, and solve mysteries.
Karen has three children and eight grandchildren. She also loves reading, gardening, and knitting, and can recite the 99 counties of Iowa in alphabetical order.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2023Max and Lil have added a sister to this book -- Carole,. She now has a small camper and a group of women friends who enjoy the hobby -- Glampers. Max is not thrilled with sleeping on a camper couch (no surprise there) and has retained her avid curiousity in other people's business. This time, there's a personal interest; she and Lil worry about Carole being in a group that seems to have more than mischief associated with unexpected events. There is reason to suspect several campers of so-called 'pranks.' They're just lucky none has been deadly.
The ending is something of a surprise, with an unexpected camper joining the rescuers.
If you like the Frannie Shoemaker series, you will espcially enjoy seeing the Mystery Sisters head to an outing in the woods.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2024Our favorite sisters, Max and Lil, and Max's dog Rosie have loaded up the Studebaker to join up with sister Carole for a "Glamping" weekend in Carole's trailer with the new friends she has made in this Clamping group.....but as in every one of their adventures, something is a foote Doon after the weekend begins. One campers chicks have been remove and the camper fell down the ravine it was parked next to until resting against a tree. The next day, one of the trailers mysteriously caught fire. There were too many coincidences and a common background story involving embezzlement, false accusations and were raising far too many red flags for both Max and Lil. Yes....they were on another case, especially after one of the targeted Glampers turns up missing!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2023It was great timing to have Max and Lil's new glamping adventure arrive just as I prepared our camper for camping. I love the adventures of the sisters and it was awesome that youngest sister Carole joined in. The descriptions of the other women's camper decorations is prompting me to look at redecorating our camper into something fun. I loved the chandelier made of the heirloom jewelry. It was a great mystery and I was cheering for Rita to grow in her confidence. What a fun travel group, supporting each other and having great adventures to look forward instead of more isolation as aging advances.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2024I really enjoy all Karen's series. The Mystery sisters remind me so much of my Mother's sisters. As I read, I imagine my aunts as the characters.
Karen has mastered the art of the cozy mystery.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2023Well put together a group of women who love camping and add in the mystery sisters and you've created a great story. Lil, Max and Rosie, of course, join Carole on a camping trip. There have been some robberies in the area but are they related to what happens at the campground?
A clean, well written mystery that keeps the reader turning the pages from beginning to end.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2023These sisters are a hoot! Karen Nortman combines her knowledge of RV stories with the funny banter between cantankerous sisters. I've really enjoyed reading the series and feel the stories keep getting better all the time. You'll get hooked on these characters and want to read all the books!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2023Really fun mystery to read on a rainy weekend. The Ladies in the camping group are so realistic that you can picture yourself there with them. Enjoyed this book a lot.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2023A light and entertaing read. I've read all the sister adventures and look forward to the next book in the series.
