Loretta is a daddy’s girl who loves hunting, fishing, and horseback riding. Unfortunately, she’s also spoiled and easily frustrated. When tragedy strikes, everything she’s depended on is instantly gone, and her only hope of survival is on the frontier in Montana. Loretta doesn’t hide her anger at the calamity that destroyed her life, pinning the blame on her last-living family member.

But when disaster strikes a second time, Loretta finds a new destiny thrust upon her. Her past is not her own, nor is the story she’s living.

Settling with family friends in the wilds of Montana above the Yellowstone River in Assiniboine Indian territory, the realities of life in 1868 come alive as Loretta comes of age. She tries to leave her life in the hands of fate, but God directs her steps.

Tropes: Proxy Bride, Age-gap Marriage, Mistaken identity, Hidden Secrets

Writing in the first person allows me to become the character. Sometimes I surprise myself with my responses and change the course of the book with my own actions and reactions.

Such is the case in "A Bride for Harley." I tired of the easy Happily Ever Afters and the template or cookie-cutter plots. I needed to write something that surprised me. It worked. By listening to my character, the crafting of this story fell into place quickly and kept me up at night, eager to get back to writing another scene the next day.

I hope you enjoy reading this story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

From the Inside Flap

Writing Historical fiction in a world where political correctness often means staying silent can be challenging. I work to remain faithful to the day's vernacular and word usage in all of my books, even if that means using a term not currently in vogue. Hearing the character's voice through shortened words, halted speaking, use of slang, or incorrect grammar breathes life into them.

Genesis 1:27 tells us, "we are all created in the image of God," and Acts 17:26 tells us "God made from one man every nation of humankind to live on all the face of the earth."

Please, dear Reader, know that my heart is to edify Christ in all things.

Sincerely,
Heidi Gray McGill

The ride of your life
The author's writing style captivated my attention and lured me to the next scene. Join in on the wagon train as the adventure unfolds. You will be on the edge of your seat until the end. I was amazed at how seamlessly various themes wove throughout the fabric of this story. Not only were the themes practical but prevalent in most people's lives. Do any of us ever feel good enough? Does something from our past haunt us to this day? What if I had not done this or that? Ever said words you regret? I'm sure we all have. Thankfully, there is a power to redeem our poor choices. I was glad to be reminded in this story that God's "purpose will always prevail in the end." He will use our circumstances for His good, no matter how egregious. I'm hopeful for a better future than I could ever have imagined on my own. Moving to an unknown place and starting anew can be daunting. Feeling like an imposter to be accepted or fit in can be draining. This story encourages us to be our true self, authentic to who we really are. Those looking for love can rest assured that they will find a mate that'll be just right for you, to help you through life's obstacles as their own. I petition you to take a moment to read this book, you will be glad you did. I received this book ahead of time as an ARC reader and was not required or persuaded to give a good review. However, I am glad to share this book truly exceeded my expectations.

Once again, Heidi brings a book with strongly defined characters and a plot that grabs the reader and spiritual lessons that pack a punch for the lead characters. What I have enjoyed about this author’s fiction writing is she doesn’t just write a great, entertaining story, she pushes the reader to also reflect and to evaluate.

Loretta, the youngest of two siblings and her elder sister Annaliese have lost their parents. Loretta is a naïve, angry, immature, and spoiled young girl. Her father it seems indulged and she was allowed lots of freedom, fun, and outdoors. Her sister was her mother’s helper and Loretta felt her sister was weak, limited, dull, and tedious. When her parent’s died, Loretta’s easy-going life ended, money was tight, and Loretta blames it all on Annaliese. Their situation doesn’t improved, in fact, becomes financially impossible. Nell lets Loretta know she has accepted a proposal from a man in Montana and then, her sister shocks her with the news that they will be moving to Montana, which means a train and then via a wagon train. Loretta continues her angry, spoiled, and vindictive ways. When her sister drowns in a river crossing, Loretta thinks that Nell’s drowning is her fault as she “willed it to happen.” For me, this was a real low point, a sad portion of the story, especially as Loretta starts reading Nell’s diary. The journal reading was the start of Loretta seeing her real, selfish self and the point she starts growing up. It was at this point my opinion of Loretta began to warm. Eventually Loretta meets Mr. and Mrs. Harrison, and Harley. The Harrison’s were fabulous characters, the type of people who shine Christ and share the gospel with others. They tenderly shepherded Loretta and accepted her as a daughter and helps her grow spiritually. Harley, their son also receives their cares and prayers. The following quote came from the epilogue and was spoken by Loretta, “God and this family has changed me. I tried to create my own destiny, but I’m much happier with the plans God had in mind.”

The writing framed the character of Loretta as a truly unlikeable person and effectively turned Loretta into a sympathetic character, hard to do unless effectively done. This was a great five-star book.

I simply devoured this book! The characters were so genuine. Even Loretta, who took the disguise of being her dead sister Nell’s identity so she could be the wife to the husband (by proxy) waiting for her sister at the end of their journey! Oh, how our schemes to fool others often cause us to be the fool! The servant’s daughter digs through all of “Nell’s (Loretta’s) things and finds that Loretta couldn’t possibly be Nell, and blabs it to everyone! How humiliating! Oh, but what 17 yr. old Loretta hadn’t realized was, that Harley, the husband, had already known this when he saw her and spoke to her. They were nothing alike. Of course Nell had described herself to him while they were courting via letters! Loretta didn’t fit the description of his wife, at all. Isabel, the servant’s daughter, wound up having her parents discharged of their duties on the ranch where they had been for years and years. Loretta felt so horrible about that and about lying. Harley wouldn’t even look at her! He left and stayed gone for over three weeks, so Loretta didn’t understand what her place was to be. She believed that she would be sent back to where they came from, but on whose money, she knew not, because she had no money, no belongings, no home nor family to go back to. Harriet, One morning, Harley’s mother said they were getting low on meat, and oh, how this girl loved to hunt and fish! Her Daddy taught her everything a person needed to know about it! So, she went out to uncrate her Daddy’s gun and then a voice says “Need some help with that?” Harley! So, they plan to go hunting at 5 am the next morning. He shoots a buck, misses, it jumps up, she gets the perfect shot, and drops it to the ground. Loretta is so proud of herself and hoped Harley would be proud of her, also! Instead, he says something like “Let’s go get it and get it to the house.” She had embarrassed and shamed him. The man should always out-shoot a girl!! Pffft! If I tell you much more about this deliciously wonderful book, I may spoil so many yummy parts that you will not want to read about from ME! 🤣 You must get this book for yourself! It is a Heidi Gray McGill novel and AREN’T THEY ALL DIVINE?? ♥️ ♥️♥️🙏🙏🙏

I listened to the audiobook of this & really enjoyed it! Loretta is the spoiled younger sister of Annalise who ends up traveling West with her when she marries a man by proxy named Harley. When Annalise dies on the journey, Loretta ends up taking her place. She does a lot of growing up on her journey, finds faith & falls in love. It's a novella so things happen a bit fast, but it's a very heartwarming story!

Loretta and her elder sister, Annalise, lost their parents and are now trying to navigate through life without them. Nell, as Loretta calls her sister, answers an ad to be a mail order bride. Months of travel in a wagon train takes it toll on the sisters and towards the end, a tragic accident.

Harley is surprised, as well as angry, when he sees his “bride” for the first time. Will these two young people find their way to love?

I learned about Heidi Gray McGill from Tema Banner’s author page and decided to download A Bride for Harley. So very glad I did. Christian historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. From the very beginning the story of Loretta and Harley drew me in. Their starts and stops and back and forth were endearing. Mr and Mrs Harrison had such a strong beautiful faith and it was a joy to learn from them. Well written Ms McGill. I will enjoy reading more from you.

I really dislike the first person perspective in this. It's a personal preference. I also was disappointed that the main character lied and it created a unneeded conflict. The story would have been just as good if they had the find love after the disappointment of her not being who Harley was expecting. I still enjoyed the characters, especially the senior couple.
