Tides of Change: The Americans are joining the war... (Spitfire Mavericks Thrillers Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 728 ratings

An exciting war thriller set in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor! For fans of Derek Robinson, James Holland, Frank Barnard and Jack Higgins.

Everything changes when US soldiers join the ranks…

December, 1941

After a tense encounter with attacking Focke-Wulfs, Flying Officer Angus Mackennelly returns to base to find Squadron Leader Bentley announcing the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

US forces are being drafted in as war is declared on Japan and an American airbase is to be established next to the RAF Banley base used by the Maverick Squadron.

Angus is promoted to Flight Lieutenant and is given orders to lead a squadron escorting the American bombers on short-range missions until they have their own escort fighters.

But after the US bombers have landed, the Germans stage an attack on the airbase and rumours start to circulate that there may be an enemy spy on base.

As Angus and the Mavericks prepare for more intense air battles over Europe, suspicion between the team grows.

Is there a spy? Are they only targeting the Americans?

And can Maverick Squadron prepare their new allies for the realities of war…?

TIDES OF CHANGE is the fifth book in the Spitfire Mavericks Thrillers series: action-packed aviation adventures set during the second world war and featuring a team of vigilante pilots.

D.R. Bailey was raised in a family of bibliophiles. From an early age, he developed eclectic tastes in fiction including Sci-Fi, Romance, Crime, and the Classics. Some of his favourite authors are still Gerald Durrell, Jane Austen, Peter James, Ellis Peters, and Isaac Asimov. He began his writing journey at the age of eleven with a fictional story about his toy teddy bear clan. To date, he has published four major fictional series. Apart from writing, Bailey has engaged in several different careers and says that these life experiences have all contributed greatly to his penchant for storytelling.

Bailey’s most successful series is his WW2 Aviation Thriller, The Spitfire Mavericks, published by Sapere Books. It features spies, thrilling action-packed aerial combat, romance, and more. The series features a maverick crew of pilots thrown out from every squadron. The hero of the hour, Flying Officer Angus Mackennelly, endeavours to save the day in a series of thrilling adventures. The series has been a best seller on multiple Amazon lists in several countries and still rides high in the charts.

Following the success of the Mavericks series, Bailey has now written another WW2 Aviation Thriller series also published by Sapere Books, The Secret Sirens. The series poses the fictional question of what if women flew into combat with the RAF in WW2. The series features exciting secret missions by the Sirens squadron, spies, intrigue and more. Strong female leads combine with some great storylines to bring the reader an adventure to keep the pages turning.

Bailey has also penned and independently published five full-length crime novels in the DI Gallway series which is a genre he is particularly fond of. The stories contain a heady mix of crime, suspense, humour, steamy romance and much more. Bailey has also tackled some controversial and topical subjects surrounding the Catholic Church. The stories are set in Ireland, and Bailey confesses to having a great affection for the Irish.

Bailey has also independently published The Innocent Killing, and four other books in a Legal Drama series featuring a fictional barrister in Dublin called Bernadette Mackenna. This new series is a steamy spicy mix of legal drama with a strong element of same-sex romance.

The Spitfire Mavericks, The Secret Sirens, DI Gallway Investigates, and Bernadette Mackenna Investigates will hopefully continue for many more books to come. Bailey pledges to continue writing for as long as he can. Bailey is dedicated to excellence and writes with passion but at the same time tries to make his words accessible to those of all persuasions, sometimes shocking perhaps, but never dull.

That's hard for me to say being both a pilot and a writer, an OLD pilot (86) and having been in the USAF and lived in Jolly old England for 7 years. Well done!
Good writing. Heading for the next edition!

This is a follow-up to the first four stories. It had the losing part to start out but came back with a solution midbook. Then, it is a little more intriguing adventure when they learn there is a traitor spy in the area. Solution is good and success is imminent. I am on the way to the next volume in this exciting series.

A glimpse of what it must have been like in England during WWII when the Luftwaffe's FW-190 dominated the skies. A nice blend of Romance, personalities and a secret spy to keep you turning pages in anticipation. Hooray for the Mk IX Spitfire

I could not wait to finish this book, My Arthur had to be behind the eight ball to finish this one. Bringing in another spy caper got old fast. I did like the B-17 bomber characters.

I have enjoyed the other books in this series very much. The author has a good way of telling the story without over doing it or Telegraph ing the ending. Those who enjoy novels set in the World War II era will likely enjoy this novel as well.

If an author is going to write about the RAF in WWII, he or she should know the difference between MI-5 and MI-6. This one does not. Nor has he given any thought, apparently, to how a German agent in Britain would communicate with his base. Or about how that agent would obtain the information that he apparently reports instantly and effortlessly. (I suppose I can forgive him for not knowing that every German agent in Britain in 1942 was either dead or working for the British.) Also, the characters are flat, with no development. The best I could say is that the book is modestly entertaining.

Combining spies and intrigue with flying just didn’t work. And I had all of Barbara, beds, and sneaking around I could manage.

This is the 5th book if n the series and there is always another adventure around the corner for “Scottish” and his crew, this time joined by the Americans. The story could have really happened that way. It is interesting to read about it and how the teams started to gel. Of course we also have a spy which puts another twist in the story.
Great writing David and I look forward to the next adventure, already on pre-order.
