- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2024The nightmare begins for Emma, as a repetitive dream turns scarier and scarier. When her friend suggests seeing a dream healer to explore its meaning, she's hesitant at first. Will Maya's practices put an end to the nightmare, or will it unleash an unspeakable end?
Author Maza weaves a haunting tale, exploring the deep, dark crevices of the mind that awaken as you sleep. The eek-in-the-night scenarios and the thoughts it makes you ponder will keep those pages turning until the very end.
A spooktacular read, sure to give you chills and thrills! A word of advice, you may not want to try and turn in right after reading this...

- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2024Cathleen Maza’s title drew me to her newest short story. Like many people, I try to figure out if there is a hidden meaning or subconscious message in my dreams, particularly if they are recurring or scary or both. This short story takes a unique approach to understanding, interpreting, and resolving recurring nightmares that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Emma is having recurring nightmares that are beginning to affect her health and overall disposition. As these terrifying dreams continue to escalate, they never quite reveal all or come to a resolution. Frustratingly, the dreams produce more questions the longer they go on. Emma’s boyfriend, who is worried and affected by the lack of sleep, recommends a woman his sister had success with who has an innovative approach to help take charge or change the dream structure. Initially, Emma thinks Maya, the dream guru, is helping her take control… that is until things begin to fall apart. Then it appears no one in Maya’s program may be safe.
Maza does an excellent job of pacing this well-crafted story. I quickly identified with the characters. I also learned a lot of theories about dreams that make sense. The clues to the mystery are cleverly placed within the story. The descriptions of the recurring dream as they evolve eerily build the readers anticipation and suspense. I did not see the surprise ending coming. Maza packs a lot of thrills in this short story. I highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024Having read several works by Cathleen Maza, one reason I keep coming back is because she has a great ability to tap into the unknown and into things that many of us experience but may choose to keep secret. In my life, I’ve known very few people who haven’t been affected, intrigued, or frightened by what transpires in their mind while they sleep. DREAM resonated with me in so many ways. How do events in my life, past and present, translate into some of the very bizarre dreams I’ve had? As a side note, This story taught me something I didn’t know: that no one can read in a dream because the parts of the brain that process language are inactive during sleep. As someone who’s tried to read in dreams countless times, this was eye-opening.
This story begins with a woman, Emma, and the horror she experiencing in a recurring dream. She learns so much in her journey to stop her nightmare—just as I believe readers will. How do we gain empowerment in our dreams? Should we learn to kill the monsters in our dreams?
As I read, I kept stopping to reread passages that made me think. What I liked best about this short fiction book was that while it answered some questions, it asked many more. If your mind is hungry, this book offers wonderful food for contemplation.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Atmospheric Thriller
“The dream begins as it always does… Except this time around, something is different.”
‘Dream’ is a tense and imaginative exploration of an area of the human psyche that is both fascinating and largely closed to us but which impinges on our ‘real’ lives: the world of nightmares.
Can our ‘sleeping life’ carry prophesies? Can therapy unlock its mysteries? What is ‘real’?
In this atmospheric thriller, troubled Emma puts herself in the hands of therapist Maya. But is Maya all she seems? The build-up of tension and mystery is skillfully handled.
“It’s not being awake that worries me.”
A great short read, and which is wrapped in tight, no-nonsense prose.

4.0 out of 5 stars ‘The night actually belongs to dreams and whatever creatures lurk in them…’
Dreams have always been strange and mysterious to me and they make for a great subject to place at the very centre of a chilling short tale like this where ‘Emma’ seeks unconventional help after a recurring nightmare begins to encroach on her life. What follows is a page-turning journey in search of resolution but with it comes twists and tension.
As the story unfolds and ‘Emma’ finds help from ‘Maya’ a type of therapist who has developed a program to equip those having nightmares to kind of fight their way through them. As this therapy unfolds, the recurring nightmare evolves and reacts with the story, even with the scene repeated, it makes for some thrilling reading. And as things seem to settle down it is revealed that others who have received this therapy are having nightmares again. Are these people connected? Are our dreams connected also? The imagination begins to drift into surreal thoughts as the story unfolds and faces the ultimate questions – is ‘Emma’s’ nightmare predicting a future tragedy and is ‘Maya’s’ history more than it first seems?
I’ll admit this story got into my head and captured the imagination. The concepts were original and the writing was well put together. A thrilling and different type of read with quick moving chapters and some great escapism.
