The New Samurai Kindle Edition
Sam’s love life is on the rocks.
Teaching in an inner city school in London is hard enough, but when he loses his job and his girlfriend dumps him on Valentine’s Day, he decides to start again somewhere new.
When he gets a job as a TEFL teacher (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) in Japan, he finds that there’s more to the land of the rising sun than sushi and sake. He makes friends with Yoshi, a young farmer from Hokkaido, Paul from New York and Helen from Swansea. But when he meets the Amazonian Tara from Melbourne, his strict no-women policy looks like it might be in trouble.
Sam learns about love and life in the crazy city of Tokyo and things are going well – until his ex-girlfriend arrives from London intent on some extra-curricular activities.
It’s not long before his ‘no women’ rule is under attack.
Sexy and funny, this book will appeal to fans of ‘One Day’.

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to write. Perhaps it was growing up in a small village that was well known for its mystery and folklore, all of which sparked my imagination as a child.
I enjoy writing in several different genres and I'm inspired by the personal stories of those around me. It's often from a simple discussion overheard in the train ('Exposure'), in a café, or in the street, where ideas for characters or scenes come to me.
I fall in love with by characters and miss them desperately once I'd finished their stories. I love my carnie boys from the Traveling Series, my dancers from LUKA and SLAVE, my smokin' hot Marine, SEBASTIAN. I love writing dialogue and always try to include touches of humor in the most poignant stories.
Whether you like thrillers, fantasy or adult romance novel, MM or FM, I hope you'll enjoy the journey through my stories.
I'm also a great supporter of the military charity www.felixfund.org.uk and sales of SEMPER FI go to support them. The stage play LATER, AFTER and the novel duet TICKTOCK and BOMBSHELL was written to honour their work.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2013This story makes me laugh. It's a story I enjoyed reading and can understand well though I'm not sure just how much others might be able to relate to it.
To me, it's not exactly a love story but more of Sam's journey and experiences almost like a travel diary which makes it interesting to see Japan from his POV. Yeah.. That's the LOL moments. Is very interesting to see the extensive of research or maybe personal experience that shown in the story. I truly enjoyed it. It's another story of this author that will stick with me. I love Sam!
I also like the friendships created there. Definitely liking Helen and Paul. Sadly, I don't get the connection between Sam and Tara as much and not too sure about their relationship either.
Overall, it's a very entertaining read and one that made me laugh and reminiscing.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2013Sam is attractive and charming and sweet and good....and searching for his path in life. I thoroughly enjoyed his journey of discovery thru Japan...JHB does a great job of introducing the reader to many aspects of Japanese modern life as well as their ancient traditions. The cast of characters were mostly likable and I felt comfortable with them. For me, I was glad the drama was kept to a minimum so I was able to enjoy the ride and take in the sights, tastes and adventure of traveling around Japan. This story is worth the read and I plan to re-read as well!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2013This book struck me as a travel and cultural guide to Japan with the story of an unassuming babe-magnet Sam sneaked into the story line. Having visited Japan twice, I enjoyed reading about the places to visit in Japan and the cultural idiosyncrasies of the country especially viewed from the lens of a Westerner. It was also about the coming of age of Sam who took a job to teach English in Japan after being laid off from his temporary teaching position in England. There was light romance in the story as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2013Too slow and boring it just never picked up. I have read some of her other books that were good. Sorry I paid for this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2012"I lived in Japan some time ago, and Ms. Harvey-Berrick's book was a lovely trip down memory lane, taking me back to a country and culture I love and respect. It would help anyone thinking of spending a year abroad in Japan to get into the right mind-set, and even though I love plot-driven action books (Tom Clancy types) and this book is a more leisure read, it is compelling, besides accurately reflecting the life of an English teacher in Tokyo, plus the author is excellent with details. The fact that Sam, the protagonist, is an extremely likeable character also helps, perhaps because the drop-dead gorgeous guy is totally clueless, which makes him very refreshing since most average looking men are convinced they are god's gift!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2014This book was not what I expected since I read The Education of Sebastian & The Education of Caroline (which I loved). However I was not disappointed. This book was so different but yet it was so enjoyable. The main character, Sam, was so likeable. I enjoyed reading the story from his perspective. There was also a great set of supporting characters. I was so engaged with such great story telling and such an endearing circle of friends that Sam created for himself. I felt like I was taking a journey through Japan with Sam and was so absorbed in everything he was learning about Japanese culture. This story was entertaining and sweet. I was smiling at the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2012This is one of those moments where I wish I were a better writer so I could do the book some justice. New Samurai has something for everyone. I picked it up and could not put it down. I connected to each character introduced, and kept wondering where this journey was going to leave us. I found the book funny, the protagonist sexy as hell, and the writing a joy to read. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
What's not to like about Sam? What's not to like about the writing of, Jane Harvey-Berrick?
This is another, great read from her pen.
I have never been to Japan, but after reading The New Samurai, I felt as if I had had a wonderful visit to that country.
Sam is a real charmer. We are all cheering him on throughout the book. I wish I could buy it in hard copy. I would buy several copies and wrap them in, Furoshiki to give away to friends!
Fun, humour, romance and more. The New Samurai has it all!

5.0 out of 5 stars Japan to a T
I bought this book (Kindle version) because one of my daughters went to Japan as a TEFL teacher, married a Japanese man and still lives there with her family. My wife and I are regular visitors and are very familiar with Japan, gaijin residents and the TEFL milieu and I can absolutely vouch for the accuracy the book. That sounds a bit boring I know but the book certainly isn't! Having satisfied myself about the book's cultural credentials I really enjoyed it as a light, diverting and well written romance. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Englishman Abroad
This is a charming novel. Sam, a temporary teacher at a London comprehensive takes up a post teaching English as a foreign language in Tokyo. He has a series of adventures and meets a wide group of well realised characters.
I felt that I learned lots of information about Japanese culture, without the book ever feeling like a travel guide. Sam himself is one of the most sympathetic characters to grace contemporary fiction, a thoroughly nice guy. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok
I really did think I was going to enjoy it and I did at the end but the middle was a little slow
