Knots: A Novel of Fractal Magic (A Gaslamp Fantasy) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

Knots and folds are the tools of magic in a world where a deadly game of Topomancy has rearranged the map of Europe.

When a thief who calls himself Escher steals an amulet in the mages’ game, he becomes a game piece himself. The mage who recovers the piece stands to win the game. But for Escher, the amulet might be his only way home.

This genre-defying novel combines fantasy, mystery, and adventure into a mind-bending tale of magic, redemption, and discovery.

Chuck Boeheim brings his career in science and technology to tales of science fiction and fantasy while leaning into the "sufficiently advanced technology" trope. He's prone to filling his notebook with celestial mechanics calculations and other research for accuracy before telling the human stories set against that background. (Don't worry, the math doesn't end up in the stories.) His debut novel Sellenria has appeared on the Amazon top Hard Science Fiction list, while Knots is an exploration of a magical world based on topology. His short story Charon recently appeared in the anthology "Of Gods and Globes III."

Chuck lives with his wife, Chidori, and two cats, Rumplethumpkin and Yomogi, on the edge of Cayuga Lake in Upstate New York. When not writing, he enjoys reading, gardening, cooking, and traveling the world. He's visited most places in the world with high-energy physics labs and is now busy filling in the gaps in between.

Loved the book and the writing style such as the excerpts from the archives that connects back to the story (or maybe even to real world events). Trefoil's character was brilliantly portraited. All the math, physics and alternate reality that the story included were perfectly balanced for the theme to revolve around without ever getting overwhelming or distracting. The characters really came alive during the story telling. Looking forward to future books by Chuck and Sellenria II and III.

It took me a bit to get the idea of this story, that the world where it takes place has broken up differently than what we know, and that knots can be infused with magic. Once I got into it, I found it fascinating and a good read. As others have said, it's hard to classify this - fantasy with science maybe?

Knots is a good name. The story is a knot in and of itself, with twists and folds that go unexpected ways as it slowly unravels to the end- or is it the beginning? In a place where math becomes magic in all its forms- knots/topology, music, fractals, equations- a waylaid traveler has to use his skills to find a way out (or is it in?) and home, facing others and himself in the process. Keeps you guessing until the end!

I love an original plot, and this one has it! Very much a unique book; a fantasy that includes science. Very readable. I can see where this would be a beautiful movie, with all the fractal and knot-work graphics that would be needed.

Knots doesn't fit into any particular genre, which is part of its charm. It's rare to find a story that defies convention/formulae and confidently goes where it needs to go. Antagonists nibble around the edges of the story to advance the narrative. The characters are engaging and interesting. The main character approaches the world so differently from my own visual/spatial mind that I was fascinated. Well worth the read.

The world of topomancy was new to me. This review was based on a complimentary pre-release copy. Luckily, just before reading Knots, I'd learned about the discipline of math known as Topology from my daughter studying it in college. She has a well-ordered mind, much like the protagonist in Knots, only the latter takes knots, mathematical precision, patterns and order and turns them into powerful tools of magic which he uses to unravel this mystery of how he ended up in a strange land and to try to get home.

Knots is a compelling story filled with unexpected characters, plot twists, literal location twists, mystery and redemption. It was so unusual a read that I struggle with how to classify it. Is mystery,? Fantasy? Adventure? A math lesson? I can't decide. What it is is a fun journey for the mind. I enjoyed the characters so much that I read it twice. I hope Boeheim dreams up a way to tie them to future adventures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Part mystery, part magical fantasy, part alternate universe

This unique novel mixes genres and interlaces humour into a mystery/adventure tale. Riffs off of the art of MC Escher, math, knots, and fractals transforming into magic, and a "geographical disaster" create a magical alternate Earth. But despite being written by a physicist and told from the point of view of a somewhat OCD character, the book isn't all "head." It also contains plenty of "heart," including a humorous cat sidekick and an energetic and intelligent love interest. The book is very well edited and the prose vivid and intelligent. Highly recommended.
