Verena Valent is at the helm of her family’s legendary Swiss skincare company in Beverly Hills. After her parents’ deaths, she becomes the sole provider for her younger twin sisters and her grandmother, rising to the challenge to guide and expand her family's business. She is in the midst of a critical international expansion when her carefully organized life begins to unravel. While she struggles to save the business that means everything to her, she meets Lance, an executive chef at the Beverly Hills Hotel. She encounters this intriguing man again on a business trip to Paris, and soon gains a new perspective on life. When the unthinkable occurs and Verena’s world collapses, her friends rally around her. Ultimately, Verena learns that truth, family, friendship, and love are the unshakable pillars of life. But will she get a second chance in business, or in love? Flawless is the first in the Love, California series. Follow smart, stylish, entrepreneurial friends as they navigate the turbulences of modern life. Set in Beverly Hills with action flung across the globe, this engaging series features gutsy, determined best friends, and how they manage to live the lives of their dreams. Rating: PG for mild language and sexual content. (No strong language, graphic sex, rape, or violence). "Flawless is an astute, intelligent, gripping romance for the modern woman… a heroine you can't fail to care for and understand." - Hannah Fielding, Author of The Echoes of Love AUTHOR INTERVIEW Q – Tell us about this contemporary series. A – The Love, California series is women's contemporary fiction with strong female leads, women’s friendships, and romantic relationships. The women are stylish, creative, and smart, but like any of us, they make mistakes and have to find their way. Some call the Love, California series the perfect chicklit beach books, while romance readers get romance… and a lot more. Q – You also write 20the century historical novels for St. Martin’s Press and other foreign publishers. What are the differences and similarities between your contemporary series and historical novels, and why do you write in these two genres? A – The Winemakers and Scent of Triumph are set in the 1950s/1920s and WWII and revolve around women who discover their inner core strength, as in the modern Love, California series. Another shared element is the appreciation of creative arts and business, from winemaking and perfumery to fashion, art, jewelry-making, and beauty. Both genres have multigenerational casts and international settings, too. My contemporary characters have more opportunities to pursue dreams with fewer restraints, but societal challenges still exist. Initially, I began this series as light-hearted emotional relief from my intense World War II saga, Scent of Triumph, which follows a female French perfumer. Focused on friend and family relationships, the Love, California series is more akin to Sex and the City (less sex, more smarts), while my historicals are longer, layered sagas. My German publisher – Goldmann/Random House – compares The Winemakers to Barbara Taylor Bradford’s books, which I adore. (We also share a May birthdate.) It’s a 2017 lead title in Germany, and I’m adapting it with a screenwriter, so if readers like historical fiction (or wine), read The Winemakers. And all audiobooks are read by the amazing, award-winning Erin Bennett. Why do I write in two genres? I have love history, particularly from a women’s perspective. My contemporary novels are fun to write, so readers can expect more of both.
