Book Description

This book tells the story of Ireland's history through fictional characters between 1899 and 1960. While fighting and rebellion was occurring in Ireland a family story was also unfolding and a child was born. Patrick Conaty was young and in love with the beautiful lass next door. At sixteen he was unaware of the rebellion that was about to begin. As a result of suspicions of each other's involvement in the fight to reunite Ireland, the families of the young lovers did not approve of their romance. When her father suspected that Patrick and his rowdy brothers were to blame for the fire, the young couple's plans were dashed. Patrick was forced to hide in the hills while the fighting raged. His family had disappeared when he emerged from hiding, leaving him to experience the many changes in Ireland alone at sixteen. In his journey from country life to running for his life, Patrick traveled to Limerick with a wee baby only to find the town was ravaged with an influenza outbreak of 1918. Along the way he meets a family that takes him in and together they form a union, hiding guns for the IRA and living upstairs from a bakery. In the end it was leaving his homeland of Ireland and bringing a child to grow up in rural America is what saved the family line from disappearing. Now they are truly free from the tragedy of famine, Illness, Rebellion and even murder, but Ireland will live forever in their Irish Bones.
