Late one evening, a young man is shot dead in London’s Liverpool Street railway station. Very shortly afterwards, the gunman is himself killed by an off-duty soldier who has witnessed the shooting. But this quickly turns out to be not just a case for the City Of London police. There is a definite connection with another murder case in a small village – where the young man lives – in rural Suffolk,. It is decided that both matters will be handed over to Scotland Yard. Chief Inspector Bryce is put in charge, liaising with DI Playford from the City, and with DI Catchpole from Suffolk – an officer with whom Bryce has worked before. When a third villager is found dead, the local vicar is heard to remark that his village is cursed. Bryce disagrees. The existence of one homicidal maniac does not mean that the entire village is damned.
