We are undeniably reaching for the stars and will likely see that historic first step on the moon outdone by a walk on Mars. NASA and foreign governments are far from the only players. SpaceX and other private ventures have put Mars colonization in the headlines and reignited the dream. Whether a 'Plan B' for Earth's abused ecosphere or the next logical step in humankind's expansion, it seems we have our sights on the red planet. Like many dreams and aspirations, there are realities to consider along with a host of challenges - at least those we can foresee. While researching my dystopian novel, Colony's Dawn, I found that I had not considered most of these. Getting there may be 'half the fun', but it is only a small part of the journey to sustainable colonization. In this perspective overview, we will consider the real-world challenges and proposed mitigation strategies and the pros and cons of emigration.
