Some books tell us a story, while others describe the world. This doesn’t mean that one fictional account is any less real than non-fiction. Sometimes the reality is so painful that fiction becomes the only medium to express what happened without losing one’s self. A Lullaby in the Desert is one of the latter.

Lullaby in the Desert became a nightly lullaby for me. It wasn’t sweet, but I knew that truth was a bitter fruit. I listened, I bore it, and I brought this story to the world’s light. It is for our children’s futures, for a world without refugees, without war, free of injustice. Help us realize that future.

I’ve always believed that we are alive for others. We exist for each other. We can’t survive alone. We all look up at the stars and wish we could be in space, looking down at the earth. However, the moment we were really up there, smothered in cold and dark, we’d realize how alone we felt, and we’d wish to be back among humanity.
