Alexandra Reed interview On 14, Apr 2020

"Alexandra Reed used to write storybooks with drawings bound together when she was a kid. She gives a really unique, fresh feel to romance with her refreshing writing. She likes contemporary, romcom, menage, reverses harem and m/m. Alexandra Reed has developed a unique style of writing and storytelling, managing to combine her love of the subject with a genuine understanding of her characters."
Since how long have you been living in Cheltenham, UK?

I moved to the UK from South Africa in 2002. I finally settled in Cheltenham in 2016 after moving around a bit for work.

At what age did you begin writing?

I've been writing for as long as I can remember. I used to write storybooks with drawings bound together when I was a kid. Obviously those stories have matured along the way, as I have.

Which is your favorite genre to read?

Definitely romance. I love contemporary, romcom, menage, reverse harem and m/m.

How do you manage writing books along with a day job as a Logistics Administrator?

It's not easy. Most days it's a struggle to be honest. When I've spent all day staring at a computer screen and dealing with brain-racking things, the last thing I feel like doing when I get home is staring at a computer screen again for a few more hours. I make it work though, especially as I love to write. Writing is more important to me than anything and it keeps me sane, so I write to not go crazy doing another job that pays the bills.

Why did you choose the romance genre?

I guess I'm a hopeless romantic. I haven't had much luck in the romance department so I put my hopes, dreams, and desires into my writing. Even if I'm not destined to have a happily ever after, I love creating one for my characters.

What are some books to read for mental health awareness?

A few good ones include books by Matt Haig, Gabrielle Bernstein, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Jamie Tworkowski. There are also loads of resources available online.

How did you begin writing the Ice Cream Series?

I can only say that it was fate. I was recommended to the authors organizing the Shop Series of books and was lucky enough to find a new family, my perfect genre to write in, and a home for my characters.

How would you describe the character of Darcy Quinn from “Grayson Falls”?

Darcy is a survivor. She's been through hell for most of her life one way or another and it's only when she meets Grayson and Cooper that she starts to realize her worth. She grows from the moment she meets them, not only in strength of character but in that she allows herself to love and care about others again.

How does writing make you feel? When you're not writing, what does a normal day for you look like?

Writing makes me feel alive. There's nothing quite like seeing your book baby all finished, with a cover, available for others to read. I get so caught up in writing that most of the time, I think of my characters as my friends and I'm just hanging out with them.

A normal day for me would be getting up, having coffee while I catch up on social media posts. I then go to work for nine hours before I get home. My evenings usually consist of dinner, two or three hours of writing, and an hour or two of reading before I head to bed and do it all over again.

How was your experience of writing a collection of super-short stories, “Our Christmas Nook”?

I absolutely loved it. I was working with an incredible group of talented authors and the whole experience was so much fun to be a part of.

Which is your favorite book in The Donut Shop Series?

Apart from mine? Hahaha. It would have to be An Old Fashioned Love Story. I just love the characters, the plot, and the emotions the story evoked in me. It was beautiful.

How did you come up with the character of Kate Reilly in “Graveyard of Memories”?

I guess Kate is in some ways my alter-ego. She's who I wish I could be in some instances. She's a kickass intellectual who gets the hot guy and the family even though the world has basically ended. At the root of everything, Kate is a survivor and a fighter, which I can relate to. She knows what loss feels like and even though she's been hurt, she still shows compassion and empathy, and above all, is willing to fight for the people she loves.

How would you describe the relationship between the brothers Drew and Tyson Hawkins in Graveyard of Memories?

Drew is the older twin. The protector. The provider. The problem solver. Tyson looks up to Drew in many ways. They are best friends and the only family each other has left. The need to find each other after becoming separated is something that neither of them can ignore. Family is everything to them. Drew is definitely the alpha brother, but Tyson has had to step up and take charge in his brothers absence. It's only fitting that they find each other when Tyson needs to relinquish that responsibility the most.

What is the toughest criticism you've ever received as an author and how did you take it?

Toughest criticism would probably be that my writing resembled something a child might write and that one of my books was nothing more than a modern day penny dreadful. I handled it reasonably well considering I decided to market said book as a modern day penny dreadful and do so with pride. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Hahaha.

What has your experience with AllAuthor been like so far? Could you offer some suggestions as to how we could improve some of the services on this website?

AllAuthor is amazing. I've enjoyed my experience immensely and can't imagine a writing career without AllAuthor being there. The competition and promotion, and the mockups are all useful and very much appreciated. More variation in the mockup options would be good, but it doesn't detract from the service as it is.
