BIOGRAPHY

After a successful career in law enforcement as a field officer, explosives detection K-9 handler, and fatality traffic investigator, Angel Giacomo gravitated into writing. She has a degree in Political Science and History. A big believer in helping veterans, Angel supports a number of veteran organizations. Her first book, a military thriller, The Jackson MacKenzie Chronicles: In the Eye of the Storm was published in 2020.

Angel has had many different careers. Her life has been a learning experience of over 50 years. Examples of her experience range from handling a bomb dog, loading cargo planes, sitting at a computer entering data, playing the trombone, washing dishes at a restaurant, and sacking groceries.

She has attended FEMA classes in Terrorism, Suicide bombers, and Nuclear/Biological, handled explosives, and shot different weapons from the M1 Garand to the AR-15, and many different pistols.

A jack of many trades and master of none. Or maybe a few. (less)

"Angel Giacomo was born in a small town in Oklahoma with a population of about 18,000 people. As a horse lover, she read all the Walter Farley and Marguerite Henry books. A musician, Angel played the trombone in Jr. High, High School, and College. She started writing fiction in her 20s. She supports a number of veteran organizations."
Where were you born, and what was your childhood like?

I was born in a small town in Oklahoma with a population of about 18,000 people. My childhood was simple. We played with the neighbors. We called PJ’s mom, Mom, and he called ours Mom. Since we lived on a hill, winter and snow meant sledding summer was riding our bikes. All that changed when my mother was laid off from her job. That meant moving to a larger city and losing that small-town life.

Do you remember the first book you ever read?

The first book I can remember has to be Black Beauty. As a horse lover, I read all the Walter Farley and Marguerite Henry books.

As a teenager, what were you obsessed with?

I was a musician. I played the trombone in Jr. High, High School, and College. I was active in the Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert, and Marching bands.

What is the earliest experience you had with books/writing that you remember?

I have been writing most of my life, high school and college style papers but not fiction. Writing was a part of my career. Report writing is stating the facts, nothing more. I started writing fiction in my 20s.

What challenges did you face while publishing your first book?

Just writing a draft is a challenge. In today’s publishing world, there are many avenues to publish. But you have to be careful as I fell into that trap of vanity publishing. While some of those are honest, some are not. What I found was the company I chose, and its head was only looking for a rush job, get it done cheaply. Editing, which I wouldn’t call it that, was haphazard and terrible. In fact, I got locked out of my manuscript, unable to authorize changes. It took time, but we finally decided to part ways.

Who inspired the character of Lt. Colonel Jackson Joseph MacKenzie?

Jackson is based on several people, including one by happy accident, as I didn’t learn about how close a friend’s journey to West Point was nearly identical to my character until after the In the Eye of the Storm was published. Dr. Russell “Russ” Wilcox Ramsey graduated from West Point in 1957. The first person I would say entered into the development of Jackson is Lt. General Hal Moore. Another would be Colonel James Nicholas “Nick” Rowe. Those two men went through the hell that I placed my main character, Jackson MacKenzie.

What encouraged you to write the cooking book titled Giacomo Family Recipes? Are the recipes mentioned taken from your family recipes?

Yes, the recipes are from the family. Copies of the actual recipes are included in the book.

What is your writing kryptonite? Inversely, what is something that never fails to inspire you?

I would say my kryptonite is the inability to find the information I need as I research everything I write. Inspiration can come from anywhere. Mostly, it comes from the amazing stories of our armed forces.

What is your work schedule like when you are writing?

I’m retired, so my schedule is what I make it.

Which is the best compliment or fan mail you have received for your work?

I would say that the best compliment I have received came from my beta readers. One, Sgt. William Fuller, called my book The Jackson MacKenzie Chronicles: Brothers In Arms “a down-to-earth view of how it was over there.” Another reader, Dr. Gus Kappler, called my book The Jackson MacKenzie Chronicles: In the Eye of the Storm, “A true-to-life Vietnam warrior’s experience.”

How do you spend “quality time” with yourself?

Myself is relative since I have three dogs. That is my quality time. And chatting with my best friend and adopted sister in Italy, Elisa Verrastro.

How did your friends and family react to your first book?

My mom hasn’t read it. It isn’t an audiobook yet. My friends that have read the books have loved them.

Which one do you prefer: writing a series or a standalone novel? Why?

That is hard to say as I didn’t start out writing a series but one book. It has morphed into a series.

Is there anything you are currently working on that may intrigue the interest of your readers?

I just finished a new book, The Jackson MacKenzie Chronicles: Golden Feather.
