Annie Koshy Interview On 16, Jul 2021

"Woman Entrepreneur, Annie Koshy was born in South India and migrated to Canada when she was quite young. She is an actress, model and branding strategist. Her success story is inspirational and unique to a wide cross-section of individuals. Her novel, HOW TO BE YOUR BADASS SELF: A Guide To Using Your Inner Energy For Brand Success provides great insight on how to nurture the mind, and soul to harness inner energy for greater success."
Where were you born, and what was your childhood like?

I was born in South India and was raised initially by my grandparents. I migrated to the US in the early 70s and we then moved to Canada as a family in the mid 70s.

Do you remember the first book you ever read? What was it about?

Freckle Juice by Judy Bloom is a book that comes to mind. Also, I was very keen on the Little House on the Prairie books.

Who is the most supportive person in your life when it comes to your writing?

My grandfather was one of the earliest supporters of my creative side. He was an author himself and an innovative entrepreneur. His fearless and kind ways in which he faced all challenges really set the standard on my own journey.

Were you a big reader as a kid too? If so, what were some of your favourite books then?

I absolutely loved Enid Blyton and soaked in all the tales of dorm life. It was so far removed from my every day life and the escapades seemed like so much fun. My interest in thrillers and ‘whodunnit’ books and movies, stemmed from an early interest in Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.

When and how did you decide that you wanted to be a professional writer?

I’ve always wanted to publish a book and never had the courage to sit down and put my thoughts down. The entire process had felt so intimidating. I think the biggest fear was whether I had enough knowledge to be able to write enough for a book! Once I began the process, it just flowed. There was so much in me to share and I realized that my experience formed a solid foundation that would help others. Through the writing process I gained even further clarity and really was able to niche into an area of expertise.

How did you come up with the idea for the book, How To Be Your BADASS Self?

Deciding on the focus of my book was the hardest part in the beginning. To take all the wealth of knowledge that bubbles within us and determine that you’re going to focus on one area was something that I had to really spend time listening to my inner voice.

What is the best thing you ever spent money on as a writer?

There are two areas that are essential that I invested in. One was in a great editor. She really helped me distill my thoughts for clarity that is sometimes difficult. Secondly, hiring a marketing company that helps in the promotion of the book has led to subsequent requests to speak at events and on virtual platforms.

What is the one advice you would like to give to young writers in the world?

I’d encourage any young writer to just begin. Write and keep going. Get feedback, share your thoughts and any progress that you make. The more you read, the better you get. So find mentors, and books that help fuel your own journey.

How long did it take you to put together the final draft of your book, How to Be Your Badass Self: A Guide to Using Your Inner Energy for Brand Success!?

The entire process from concept to creation took about a year and a half. The hardest part was to begin the first chapter. I wrote part of it and then got stuck. I realize now that I should have just skipped what I was having a hard time articulating and continue the other chapters. Once I buckled down to the writing process, I dedicated an hour a day with an aim to complete one chapter a week.

What is the biggest struggle people face while branding themselves professionally?

I have seen some brands try to be different and gain customer attention by doing things that are offensive rather than just standing head and shoulders above the competition. While it is important to have a unique hook to draw clients in, it will negatively impact your long term brand identity if you are offensive and disrespectful in the process.

Do you prefer reading or writing? Why?

I love to read and find the time to do so even though it has become harder to dedicate the hours I used to do so. In terms of writing, I find the process painful and prefer editing and doing copy-editing.

What's next for you? What are you working on now?

A couple of new commercial projects and continued work in the social media marketing realm. We are always in need of not great male leaders or female leaders. We are looking for just great leaders. So DO just that and continue to lead and always be your authentic Badass self.

What other things, apart from writing, do you enjoy doing?

Being a creative person, my work as an actress, model and voice artist has really ramped up. I continue to empower others to be their best selves and to live true to their voice.
