      • I teach composition, and I show students various pictures such as a room papered with wadded pieces of paper and an overcrowded bulletin board. I have them describe the room, and every time someone says "writer's block". I tell them that sometimes my own writing is in worse shape than this room, but I am always able to fix it. I only give myself an hour to come back to it. I tell students (and myself), "There is nothing wrong with your writing that cannot be fixed."

      • I grew up in a tiny town with nonstop athletics and not much else. While the other kids ran and batted and shot baskets, I wrote poetry and stories. Writing has not always been a continuous activity, but I learned that it was something I could do.
