What inspired you to start writing at 60, and how did researching your family history influence your debut novel?
My daughters went off to university, and I had more me time when i reached 60.. I had been researching my family history for ten years prior, and I was interested in learning more about one of my great-grandfathers' life. I wondered if he regretted leaving his family and emigrating to Canada.
Why did you choose Shrewsbury as the setting for “Number 81”?
Shrewsbury is where I was born and grew up and where most of my ancestors lived. It is a medieval market town that still has many Tudor black-and-white buildings. Passages (shuts) crisscross the town centre, making it ideal for storytelling.
How do you balance historical accuracy with storytelling when depicting early 1900s life?
I conducted extensive research using books about Shrewsbury and by visiting and walking around the town. The hardships faced by my characters reflected the times in which they lived.
Can you share any interesting discoveries from your family history research that made their way into your book?
My Great-grandfather William left Shrewsbury after his wife died of TB and emigrated to Canada, leaving behind my grandma and her two sisters. He travelled with another woman and stated on the passenger list that they were husband and wife, but they were not married at the time. Number 81 IS THE HOUSE where my gran was brought up by her aunty and the house where my dad was born.
What has been the most rewarding part of your writing journey so far?
Despite the difficulty of writing a book, I persevered even when my health took a turn for the worse. Holding my published book in my hands, finally, after five years of work, was a magical moment.
How did your stroke in 2021 affect your writing process, and how did you find the motivation to continue?
Having a stroke meant writing was the last thing on my mind. I was in the hospital for three months and was focused on rehab. Trying to stand up and then walk a little. I was exhausted most of the time, too shocked to realise how my life had changed in a moment(Atrial fibrillation was the cause). When I told the hospital staff I was writing a book, they encouraged me and brought a pen and paper to my bed.
What adaptations or tools have helped you type and write with one hand?
Typing is slower with one arm and one hand, and it can frustrate me if I leave the caps lock key on .
What advice would you give to others who face physical challenges but still want to pursue their passions?
Don't beat yourself up if you go days or even weeks without progress with your writing. Take it slowly, little by little, and you will reach your goal..
Were there moments when you doubted finishing your book? If so, how did you push through? How has the support of family and friends impacted your journey as an author?
Yes, there were plenty of moments spent lying in the hospital. If it weren't for the encouragement of my family and friends, I think I would have given up on my dream.
Your second novel is also set in Shrewsbury—what can readers expect from it?
My second novel is inspired by a great-great-grandmother. Being a poor Victorian woman led to many hardships. But her strength sees her through. The town features heavily and i hope my readers recognise Shrewsbury.
Do you have a writing routine or favorite place to write?
I find i work better in the mornings and used to write in the spare bedroom but can't get up the stairs anymore. So have a comfy chair and desk in the living room.
If you could give “Number 81” to one historical figure, who would it be and why?
I'd give number 81 to Charles Darwin. He was born in Shrewsbury, and i'd like it if he could remember some of the landmarks i use.
What do you hope readers take away from your novels?
An insight into life in the early 1900's and the illnesses and hardships they faced. .Reconciliation is always possible. I hope they enjoy my main character finding peace.
