Daniel Georgiev Interview On 24, Mar 2025

"Daniel Georgiev is a passionate storyteller and the author of immersive low and high-fantasy novels that transport readers to richly imagined worlds. Blending epic adventures with intimate, character-driven narratives, his stories explore themes of resilience, identity, and the fine line between good and evil. His books offer thrilling journeys through magical realms while prompting deeper reflections on the choices that shape us."
What first inspired you to write fantasy novels, and what draws you to both low and high fantasy?

I draw inspiration from everywhere—conversations, experiences, and especially anime and video games. Fantasy is such a vast genre, offering endless creative opportunities. Low fantasy allows us to explore a world similar to our own but with supernatural elements woven in, while high fantasy gives us the power to reshape reality entirely. Writing high fantasy feels like being a god of your own world!

How do you balance intricate world-building with strong character development in your stories?

I always felt something was missing when moving from one chapter to another—it often felt empty. So, I fill that space with inner monologues, character thoughts, or, in Mathsmagica, with the Among the Archives sections—unique snippets that reveal lore or foreshadow future events. I also integrate world-building naturally through character interactions rather than dumping information on readers.

Can you walk us through your writing process? Do you outline heavily, or do you prefer a more organic approach?

It depends on how serious I am about the project. If I’m committed, I start with a 3-5 sentence pitch, then build the world, followed by the characters. Once that foundation is solid, I create a full start-to-finish outline. And no, it doesn’t restrict me—it actually motivates me! If I'm writing more spontaneously, like with Shadow Saviour, I skip all preparation and just dive in, creating everything on the fly.

Do you have any particular authors or books that influenced your writing style?

I’m heavily influenced by some... unreleased authors. But I’m also a fan of Brandon Sanderson, particularly the original Mistborn trilogy and Skyward. I love writing that’s direct and free of unnecessary fluff.

Your stories explore resilience, identity, and moral ambiguity—why do these themes resonate with you?

Humans have a strong sense of justice, yet we live in a world full of injustice. It’s survival of the fittest, though laws sometimes help. Without going into too much detail, I’ve been on the receiving end of injustice, which has deepened my connection to these themes.

What’s the most challenging aspect of creating a fantasy world, and how do you overcome it?

The hardest part is making a world that feels real and logical while being completely separate from our own. Fantasy allows for the impossible, but I believe magic and world-building should still follow consistent rules. For example, Mathsmagica isn’t just about magic—it’s about a structured system, influenced by my background in game development. Magic follows logical principles, almost like programming. Of course, I don’t overwhelm readers with the technical details, but those curious will find glimpses—like the spell equations included in Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow. And the secret to overcoming world-building challenges? Research. Research! RESEARCH! Always ask yourself the tough questions first.

Do you draw inspiration from real-world cultures, history, or mythology when designing your settings and characters?

Absolutely. I pull inspiration from people I meet, historical events, different cultures, and mythology. That said, I always aim for originality, disguising my influences where I can. Those who look closely, though, might catch hints of Japanese and Samurai inspirations in Mathsmagica. Fiction has divided people throughout history—sometimes even leading to wars. That idea influenced the diverse cultures in my stories.

Which of your characters do you feel the most connected to, and why?

We’re all multi-layered, and there’s a part of me in every character I write. But at this point, I relate most to Sova, the main character of Mathsmagica. He’s ambitious, curious, intelligent, and impatient. He makes mistakes. He learns—sometimes the hard way—that power alone can’t change the world. Ultimately, it’s about realizing that while we can change ourselves, changing the world is an entirely different struggle.

How do you approach crafting a compelling magic system or unique lore in your worlds?

By grounding it in logic and physics. In my worlds, magic isn’t random—it relies on a resource, interacts with matter, and often requires a catalyst. This approach keeps things balanced and prevents magic from being an easy fix for every problem.

What role does conflict play in your stories, and how do you make it feel meaningful rather than just action-driven?

Conflict is never random—it stems from character motivations. Those involved in the conflict must have their own sense of justice. That way, readers aren’t just watching a fight; they’re questioning who’s truly right or wrong. I want my readers to ask, What is good and what is evil in this situation?

What has been the most rewarding part of your journey as an author so far?

Interacting with readers! When someone messages me about my books, shares their thoughts, or tells me they loved a certain moment—it’s incredible. I’d gladly spend months writing and editing just for that kind of connection

What challenges have you faced in publishing and promoting your book, “Shadow Saviour,” and how did you navigate them?

Shadow Saviour was written and edited in just two days—a weekend experiment where I wanted to see if I could write a short story on a whim. Because of that, I never felt right selling it, so instead, I use it as a free gift for anyone who signs up for my newsletter.

Do you have any advice for aspiring fantasy writers who want to create immersive worlds and engaging plots?

Once you have a great idea, tie it to a fundamental human conflict. And most importantly—enjoy the process!

Are there any upcoming projects or books you’re currently working on that you can share with us?

Mathsmagica: Light’s Shadow is coming soon! It’s book 2 in the Mathsmagica series and will answer a lot of the questions readers had from book 1. It also features twice the number of illustrations—and yes, I’m very excited about it! Beyond that, I’m already working on a standalone dystopian book. Expect snow. Lots of snow.
