Everleigh Green Interview On 17, Aug 2023

"Everleigh Green is a captivating author with an unyielding passion for crafting steamy contemporary romance stories that leave readers breathless. Nestled in the heart of New York City, she delves into worlds of forced proximity, fake fiancés, secret babies, and Billionaires with a capital 'B'- weaving tales that enthrall and enchant her devoted audience. When she isn't conjuring up intoxicating love stories, you'll find Everleigh basking in the company of her adorable four-legged companion, Cara, who holds the title of the cutest dog in the world."
Where were you born, and what was your childhood like?

New York City baby! A true city girl.

Can you tell us about your journey as an author? How did you get started, and what inspired you to pursue writing as a career?

I’ve always love stories: writing, telling and watching them. I’m fascinated by the lives of billionaires and the power dynamic that brings. I’ve also written TV pilots and screenplays but they are more comedy focused.

The romance genre has evolved over the years. How do you see it changing in the future, and are there any new sub-genres or themes you'd like to explore in your future works?

It’s amazing how there is literally no end to nuance and you can keep cutting out a specific slice of life and heighten it or put it under a microscope. The thought of an infinite number of writing possibilities really excites me! I like the idea of blending more murder mystery with romance so that’s a possible sub-genre.

Your stories certainly resonate with many romance enthusiasts. Could you share a bit about your writing process?

Story story story! After I come up with my main characters and I’m absolutely certain of who they are, I can put them in any situation. I’m so driven by plot because that is what keeps readers interested and turning pages. Big picture, I start with a setting and my main characters then micro level I write a chapter by chapter outline and then get down to the finer details. Sprinkle in some comedy and fun supporting characters and that really rounds everything out. Then of course that’s just draft 1, so I have to revise it before it goes to the editor.

How do you come up with the compelling characters and engaging plots that keep readers hooked?

I think always coming from a truthful and honest place even if that place might seem ugly. It’s important as a writer to come from a judgement free place and not present the ‘nicest’ version of these characters. Readers will generally like unflawed characters but what they will connect with most are flawed, essentially human characters. The good, the bad and the sexy.

Your novels often feature themes like forced proximity, fake fiancés, secret babies, and Billionaires. What draws you to these particular tropes, and how do you keep them fresh and engaging for your readers?

These are some of my favorite tropes! I grew up watching a lot of soap operas and I think subconsciously these themes are embedded in my brain as great hooks for readers. It’s inevitable from titles and blurbs what readers know what to expect but why they are reading is to see how they all unfold. I also like to see what’s happening in the zeitgeist and allow that to influence my next undertaking. For example, so much of the consciousness is shifting into social media, politics and religion. These are some themes I would love to explore and mix with romance.

The Billion Dollar Club series has gained a large following. What inspired you to create this series, and what do you believe sets it apart from other contemporary romance novels?

Thank you! It’s been a really fun writing journey putting all these puzzle pieces together. I think what sets it apart is that I like to inject humor into my stories as well as drama. A great story will have the full spectrum of emotion and maybe even cause readers to navel gaze themselves. This hasn’t been an intention of mine but so many of my readers have emailed me saying that some of the plot points or characters have made them a little more introspective. Even thought my main objective is to entertain and give some escapism, I can’t deny that it’s very flattering to be touching so many readers. This just makes my heart sing.

Apart from writing, you mentioned discovering new cooking recipes. Are there any dishes or recipes you've come across recently that you'd like to share with your readers?

Oh man, I’m obsessed with Mexican food, it’s my favorite cuisine. I’ve managed to assemble the most perfect guacamole recipe that is so spicy it will blow your mouth off, I love it. I don’t think I could even tell you the recipe because it’s a mix of the last 7 or 8 I’ve tried

As a successful author, how do you deal with writer's block or moments when you feel stuck in your creative process?

It happens to everyone. It’s not a bad thing, it usually just means I’m not connected to myself in some way. If I’m being honest and look around, I’ve usually lost my way a little so the antidote to this is to get out and experience life! I call my friends and we go to a concert, or a movie or take an art class or play mini golf. I try and go back to my inner child find the ‘play’ of life and 9 times out of ten this is the cure I need.

NYC is known for its vibrant atmosphere. How does living in the city influence your writing, especially when it comes to setting and creating the backdrop for your stories?

As far as I’m concerned it’s the epicenter of the world. There is a major class distinction here and I love the idea of worlds colliding. The city is aspirational so it opens the door for desire. I like to constantly be asking my characters to be making these big decisions and often that feels very New York to me. Even when you are doing something you are definitely not doing 50 other things.

We can't ignore your love for watching 'Law & Order' and its spin-offs. Is there any particular reason why this show captivates you, and has it ever influenced any of your writing?

I think the fact that Law & Order: SVU has been on the air for over 20 years speaks to just how good the storytelling is. Sure, it’s a little predictable at times but it never fails to amaze me the execution of the performances and how they just keep generating these amazing storylines. The justice system itself is a fascinating place, so add in a great city plus and incredible female lead and I’m all in.

How does spending time with your adorable dog, Cara, influence your writing or creativity?

She’s perfect. Cara is a cheeky monkey. I swear in another life she was a detective or maybe even a crime stopper in a cozy mystery novel. She is so intuitive, she can tell if I’m having a bad day. She loves to cuddle but she also loves to play. Whenever I’m feeling distracted she pulls me into the present moment with those big piercing blue eyes! When it’s just the two of us, I talk to her about my days and I know on some level she understands every single word cause she’s picking up in my vibration. She loves chicken and I love Sundays when we go to Central Park.

On a different note, how has exploring new cooking recipes impacted your life and writing journey?

I like anything creative. And cooking is right up there. Staying creative occupies the right side of the brain. They more creative I stay, the less anxiety and depression I feel. Those can’t exist when the creative brain is stimulated so I try and remember that if I ever start to feel down. I also love to learn about new things, so if I don’t know my OCD takes over and I go on a Wikipedia spiral.

What can readers expect next from Everleigh Green? Are there any upcoming projects or new series you'd like to tease?

You bet! My next book ‘My Grumpy Billionaire Protector’ is being released on August 11th. It’s a little darker than my previous work, and this book is set in the world of politics. I love Shane and Evie’s relationship so much and there are some nice twists and turns in there. You can read for free in KU, by clicking here
