J.S. Andersen Interview On 05, Aug 2025

"Jeanette is a creative spirit who enjoys crafting, sewing, photography, and going for walks—all of which inspire her storytelling. Though it took over 30 years to publish her first book, she never gave up on that dream. Whether capturing a moment through her camera lens or reflecting on her journals, Jeanette draws on everyday life and personal experiences to shape her heartfelt stories, from whimsical tales like Come with Pickles to the emotional depth of My Poetic Soul."
What inspired you to start writing books, and when did you begin?

In 1st grade they had a writing contest and I won. I did again in 5th grade. In my 9th grade English class we were told to write down goals. Mine was to write a book. It took my 30+ years to accomplish it, but I got it done.

How do your hobbies, like crafting and sewing, influence your writing or spark creativity?

I have an active imagination, example: If I look into a field with horses, a creak and an old shed, the story idea begins.

Do you find that going for walks helps you think through plot points or develop characters?

It really depends so I'd say 50/50,

Your photography must give you a unique eye—do you ever use your photos as inspiration for scenes or settings in your books?

All the time.

What inspired the character of Pickles, and why did you choose to center the story around his search for food?

The idea came from my husband and we went from there.

What age group did you write Come with Pickles for, and what message or feeling do you hope young readers take away from the story?

Toddlers to grade school. I want to show that sharing and working together makes a happy ending.

What was the turning point that made you decide to write about your personal emotional journey in “My Poetic Soul”?

I was going through a deep depression with personal problems. I felt the best way to pull me through was to write how I felt and hopefully it may help someone else.

Describe your ideal writing space—does it include any of your hobbies or creations?

I sit in my computer room, look out the window while listening to music and think of what the MC is thinking. What got me ideas on Hidden Secrets and Buried Secrets was reading in my journal I kept in Jr. and High School.

How do you balance your time between writing and your many other interests?

Hard question to answer. Lots of times I have to force myself to write.

Have you ever written a character who shares your hobbies? What was that like?

Funny you should ask. The MC in Hidden and Buried Secrets is a reliving my life at that age and what I went through. It's my way of getting back and standing up for myself.

Is there a particular genre or story idea you haven’t explored yet but would love to in the future?

Yes. I want to explore on more action and adventure.

What’s your writing process like—do you plan everything out or let the story unfold as you go?

I have the idea and start writing.

How has your journey as a writer evolved over the years?

I've learned how to better my writing and know that not everyone will like my books and not take it personally. We all have different interests.

What advice would you give to other creative individuals who are thinking about writing their first book?

Never, never give up. Even if you only write 5 minutes a day or at a time, you are writing. It doesn't even have to be based on your story. Carry a small notebook in your purse or car. When an idea crosses your mind, write it down because you will forget it. I also carry a small recorder in my purse. I've had interesting encounters with people who told out of the world stories. I retold what they said in my car and have used it in my story.
