"Living in Denver, author Krista Sandor is the author of the sexy standalone Langley Park series which readers have dubbed "heart-tugging" and containing "palpable love and pain." She writes contemporary romance with a hint of suspense. When she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in August of 2015, contemporary romance was her escape, her safe haven. She believes that this is the genre of hope and happiness. She writes under her maiden name to honor her Harlequin Romance loving grandmother, who had a giant bookshelf crammed with romance novels. While writing her first book, Krista was a little concerned about what her father and mother-in-law would think of having a romance writer in the family, but they've turned out to be two of her biggest supporters. Having lived all over the country and meeting wide range of amazing people, she can't help but incorporate these amazing souls into her books. Krista loves meeting new people and interviewing them about their chosen profession or area of expertise.
The author lives by the motto: Do Better. She looks at life as a series of lessons and learning opportunities."
Having worked as an aerobics instructor, a fast-food cashier, an elementary school teacher, and even a swimsuit calendar model, how did you stumble upon writing?

I came to romance in a very unconventional way. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in August of 2015. It was a scary time for me and my family. We weren’t sure what to expect. I was an anxious mess. When you’re living through hell, one of the hardest things to do is escape--even for a moment. A good friend sent me Katy Evans book, “Manwhore.” It was exactly what I needed. The happily ever after was my safety net. I always knew, whatever the characters endured, they would always prevail. After a year of reading hundreds of romance novels, I decided to take the plunge and write one of my own. On the MS front, I’m happy to report that I’m doing well. I still run five miles a day and have plenty of energy to keep up with my growing sons.

What is your favorite coffee shop and why do they fascinate you?

I haven't met a coffee shop I haven't liked. From Starbucks to the cozy mom-and-pop shops, I love the anonymity. I love listening to snippets of other people's conversations.

Where do you live now? Does the place make an appearance in your writing?

When crafting my Langley Park Series, I wanted to create a town that was just as important as the characters. I created Langley Park from three areas I absolutely adore. I live in Denver but grew up in the Kansas City area. As a teenager, the first place I fell in love with was the Brookside neighborhood in Kansas City. Gorgeous Tudor, bungalow, and American Foursquare style homes line the streets and have always enchanted me.

Langley Park’s town center was inspired by Olde Town Arvada in Colorado and the downtown area of Golden, Colorado. I used elements from each place to create an actual map of the town! My architect husband cringes at my handiwork, but I love it. I named all the streets after Kansas plantlife. I named the lake after a high school English teacher who was kind to me. I even added a botanic garden.

What do you like about contemporary romance as a genre?

When I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, contemporary romance was my escape, my safe haven. No matter what the characters had to endure, they always found their happily ever after. This is the genre of hope and happiness.

What brought you to write the book, The Road Home?

I had been playing with the idea of writing a series and shared the idea with my husband. He supported me from the start. I started writing while my boys were at school, and the series grew from there.

Were there any fears or doubts while writing the first book? How did your friends and family react?

I didn't have any doubts about this book. It poured out of me. I was a little concerned about what my father and mother-in-law would think of having a romance writer in the family, but they've turned out to be two of my biggest supporters.

How many books are going to be in the series?

I've planned to have five full-length novels and a novella in this series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone or in order.

Here is the rundown so far. The fourth book is currently in the works.

The Langley Park Series:

The Road Home--relaunching in September 2018
The Sound of Home--releasing in October 2018
The Beginning of Home--releasing November 2018
Book 4--name to be determined--releasing January 2019

You have received some very good reviews for The Road Home. How do they inspire you?

I'm grateful for every single review. It touches me deeply to know my words have brought happiness to readers. The readers bring me great inspiration and strength.

"You can outrun a lot of things. The truth isn't one of them," is a line from the description of The Road Home.

This line cuts right to the bone for me. While The Road Home is a steamy romance, it also touches upon mental health and addiction. I grew up with a family member who struggled with these demons. I know first hand how difficult it can be to grow up in this kind of situation.

Who inspired the character of Jenna Lewis? Will you ever model and characters after your best friends?

Jenna came to me in pieces. I saw fragments of her story and wove them into a backstory that grew into the Jenna Lewis you meet in The Road Home.

I do model characters partly after my friends. I've lived all over the country and traveled to many interesting places. I've met a wide range of amazing people. I can't help but incorporate these amazing souls into my books.

What kind of research have you done for your books?

For me, research and rich characters go hand in hand. I love doing research. I love meeting new people and interviewing them about their chosen profession or area of expertise. I also love YouTube. It’s amazing all the things you can learn there!

For my first book, The Road Home, relaunching September 25, I chose main characters with occupations I knew well. Before being an author, I was an elementary reading specialist. My husband is an architect. I was able to pull from our joint knowledge base.

For my second book, The Sound of Home, releasing in October, I ventured into uncharted waters with an attorney and a classically trained musician. I had a ball researching classical composers and different pieces of music.

For my third book, The Beginning of Home, releasing in November, I took another step out of my comfort zone. This book features a photographer and a pilot. I spent a day at a small regional airport near my home in Denver. I met two private pilots who were kind enough to answer all my questions--they even brought me on the plane!

The fourth book, releasing in January 2019, has added a few pounds to the scale. I’m researching German baking. There’s an authentic German bakery in my town. I’ve spent a lot of time watching them create delicious strudels and kuchen (cake). My favorite is the bienenstich or bee sting coffee cake with vanilla cream filling and a drizzling of honey--that’s where you get the bee sting name!

What is the most genuine review you've received? What changes have you made?

I live by the motto: Do Better. With each book, I want to improve my craft. I look at life as a series of lessons and learning opportunities. I take to heart every review I've received. I'm grateful for the feedback and support.
