Sarina Siebenaler Interview On 06, Mar 2023

"Best-selling and award-winning children's book author, was the first in my family to attend University and receive a degree. She began writing words that rhyme and started turning these words into poetry. She is a self-published author. Her debut picture book is Do Not Wish for a Pet Ostrich!"
What are some early childhood experiences you had that shaped the way you are today?

Growing up with a father who was in the military and a mother who is a native of Taiwan gave me the gift of immersing myself in cultural connections and provided a broader perspective of traditions from around the world. It shaped my appreciation of cultural diversity for the traditions, languages, religions, and behavioral patterns that have bridged the gap to building relationships and friendships into adulthood.

What was your childhood ambition?

I knew early on that pursuing an education beyond high school was very important. I was the first in my family to attend University and receive a degree. I've always enjoyed language and literature and found myself a dreamer of pursuing a profession that could foster that passion. I entered a corporate career profession that allowed me to write policies and procedures and help identify regulatory and compliance standards. Still, when I had children, I found writing stories and creating books to be invigorating and fulfilling. It's a beautiful feeling to help readers with literacy. I aim to inspire creativity and spark imagination in those that have or will read my books.

What are some of the greatest books you've ever read?

My kids and I have read many books that have brought us great joy. If I had to choose just one book today, it would be This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen. It's a clever story and silly fun. The art is also fantastic. Five stars in our household!

What was the name of your debut picture book? In what ways has it changed your life?

My debut picture book is Do Not Wish for a Pet Ostrich! My second book is Do Not Wish for a Birthday Unicorn! I'm working on my third book, Do Not Wish for a Christmas Elf! Writing silly and entertaining stories for children that help benefit reading and literacy has allowed me to gain pleasure in a creative outlet. It's enjoyable to think outside the box and find a mental avenue focusing on bringing children joy and entertainment.

What are the best ways a parent can support a child with autism?

There isn't a one size fits all approach. Each child is unique and special and independently requires a customized plan to benefit that child. Community connection and strong bonds with a village of specialized individuals have worked well for my son.

When sending a book to a publisher or agent as an unknown author, is it worth mentioning if you're well-known in another unrelated field?

I'm a self-published author. I have yet to gain experience working with or communicating with a publisher or agent.

What is the process of completing a book when someone else illustrates your book? In what ways do you try to communicate your vision to your illustrator? How do you coordinate?

I have a fantastic illustrator that has impeccable talent! I will send her my manuscript, and she will begin thumbnails of a rough sketch for each spread. She will then send it to me for review. Once that is done, she begins sketching and rendering. In the process, we email for ideas, changes, and the finished work. It's wonderful that technology allows distant partnerships even when you don't live in the same country! Getting the completed files feels like a gift every time. It's one of my favorite parts of the creative process. I am genuinely grateful for what she does and how well our chemistry is in sync. My kids and I think she is the coolest!

What children's book is worth a second read as an adult?

It highly depends on the person. Many categories of books make up the book industry, and as children, we tend to read classics passed on from generations before us. I've read many books, both published by highly acclaimed writers and those that are less well-known. A book will speak to each person and serve a purpose, whether for reading leisure or a book that helps bring value to their current needs. If it resonates with an individual, it may be a book that can be read repeatedly or passed on to children. That's what I love about books!

How did you come up with the idea for your book, Do Not Wish for a Birthday Unicorn!?

My first book, Do Not Wish for a Pet Ostrich! creates an element of surprise for book 2, Do Not Wish for a Birthday Unicorn! At the end of each story, the main character shares with readers what the next book will be about. My daughters both loved unicorns when I wrote it, and I know I, myself, had loved mythological fairytales as a child. I immediately had a plot with conflict and resolution ideas for the unicorn in book 2. My daughters gave me a list of what they thought would be silly for our unicorn, Starlight. They were a big part of my inspiration to create this story. Those that have read the unicorn book have learned that the next character for book three will be all about the silly shenanigans of a Christmas elf!

If unicorns exist, what are the implications?

You'll have to read Do Not Wish for a Birthday Unicorn! to find out! ;)

What is the kindest thing your pet has done for you?

We have a Goldendoodle, Ellie. Her loyalty, sweetness, and companionship have been incredible for our family.

What mistakes do well-intentioned neurotypical autism advocates make?

I don't know of any mistakes. All advocates with a heart to give to others lead with the intent to help with resources and support.

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote and where you wrote it (in an old notebook, crumpled piece of paper, on a laptop, etc.)?

My first story, Do Not Wish for a Pet Ostrich!, was written on my phone, then I added it to a document on my laptop. I never handwrite my stories. I usually generate ideas throughout the day or week. I jot down notes and couplets on my phone and put them together in draft form. When I have a story from beginning to end, I polish it on my laptop.

What sort of advice do you have for any novice writers out there?

Research and mentorship are super important. Anyone can write a story, but only a tiny percentage of writers will earn income or become recognized for their published work. Hiring a fantastic editor, a quality illustrator (if applicable), and a graphic designer to ensure your book is plausible in this highly competitive market is vital. Also, beta readers in your niche that are beyond family and friends are necessary too. Once your book is published, marketing is essential to stay topical and gain reach for your audience. Never rush the process. It's better to wait and ensure every aspect and detail is of the best quality possible.

Finally, how has AllAuthor helped you promote your books? Would you recommend this platform to your author friends?

The representatives of AllAuthor have been easy to work with, kind, and professional. They offer incentives for promotional graphics that work well with my social media platforms. The weekly banner posts help generate visibility on Twitter since I am not very active there. I would recommend AllAuthor as a platform that serves generous support to authors. It is a place where readers can capture your book resume and learn more about an author, including new releases and promotions.
