Trish Porter Topmiller interview On 17, Apr 2020

"Trish Porter Topmiller was born in Redwood City, California. Trish shares her entire relationship with her father Chuck King in her book “King Here”. She has written a remarkable account of her father, and how God worked all things together for good to bring him to Christ. Trish does a great job of illuminating the many sides of a complex man."
Where were you born? Do you still live in the same city?

Born in Redwood City, California. I live in Colorado Springs and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

As a child, what did you want to become when you grow up?

I didn't think much about what I wanted to be other than an athlete. I lived in the moment and didn't think about my future.

What was the most rewarding part of the Olympic experience?

Accomplishing something that no one thought I could do. To be one of the best in the country and world. To be part of the Olympic Family.

How many years did you practice in order to become multiple times U.S. and World Masters Champion?

I started training again when I was forty years old. I won my first U.S. Masters champion less than a year later and broke the world record for women age 40-44 years old three times that year. I won my first World Masters Championship after two years.

Was there a specific moment from the 1988 U.S. Olympics that you will never forget?

There are many amazing moments but I think the Opening Ceremonies is etched in my soul. The U.S. Olympic Team started chanting USA, USA, USA getting louder and louder with each step. The excitement was building with each shout as we entered the closed in dark tunnel to burst forth into the open stadium to the roar of 120,000 people waving American Flags.

What compelled you to become a writer?

I was dyslexic as a child and flunked spelling. I was not a good reader and I never thought I could become a writer. I had a friend who relentlessly encouraged me whenever we spoke that I needed to write a book about my life. Then another friend invited me to a writers conference which gave me many of the tools and information needed to be a successful writer.

What events helped inspire your decision to write book, Rekindle Your Dreams?

My friend who continually encouraged me to write a book. Then I learned the importance of the take-away which is to write a book with meaning and purpose. Rekindle Your Dreams began to take shape because I didn't want to just tell my story.

How emotionally challenging it was to share your father’s inspiring, yet tragic life story in "King Here"?

Sharing all the stories in King Here have been incredibly emotional for me. As I Fleshed them out while writing about them my heart ached. It did allow me to process all the events and heal some of the holes in my heart. Talking on the radio or t.v. has been a continued challenge but I do believe each time is a step towards closing the wounds.

With whom did you share the good news for the first time when you won the World Masters High-Jump Championship?

My husband Pat and my son Connor were typically the first ones I spoke with and shared my exciting news.

At the end of the day, what makes you most satisfied as an author?

To be able to share my story, encourage others, and impact lives for Jesus. I want to help show people the love of Jesus and how to meet Him.

How do you prepare yourself for being a guest on radio and television programs?

Breathe! Breathe! Then pray for my time. That God can use me and I can share what He wants me to say, and make a difference in peoples lives. Then I read my Bible devotional for the day.

What's your favorite way to unwind after a hard day?

I love a good workout but usually I prefer to do them in the morning. I like to spend time talking my day through with my husband. If it's been a tough day I'll definitely need a hug.

How do you feel about being the subject of interviews in the Wall Street Journal and USA Today?

I am very grateful for all the interviews I've gotten over the years. I feel it's an honor and a privilege. I enjoy giving interviews and sharing my story.

Where did you first meet James Topmiller? In what ways does he support your writing career?

One of my best friends husbands introduced us in Albuquerque. Our story is an amazing one filled with lots of God moments. James is incredibly supportive of my writing and promoting the book. He helped edit the book and is a big reader himself. I am very thankful for all his support.

Who or what was it that first introduced you to AllAuthor? What are your thoughts and opinions on it so far?

I believe one of the other Morgan James authors posted something on Facebook about AllAuthor. I think it's a great opportunity for authors to promote their books. Thank you.
