Love, Travel, and Volunteering : Caring for the World (Travel Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
Experience the challenges and joys of making a difference while meeting new friends all over the world
Many people dream of seeing the world and making a difference. Not everybody will act on that dream, an undertaking that can be scary and overwhelming. Kandy puts those feelings aside and sets off to volunteer as a nurse in Peru. But things do not always work out as expected. Kandy does not know that she will end up doing voluntary work as a nurse in Guatemala, with children in Thailand and South Africa, and dogs in Jamaica and Mexico. She is left stranded in the middle of nowhere, jumps off the world’s highest commercial bridge, connects with monkeys, snorkels with seals, and so much more!
Will the joys of her self-discovery journey outweigh the hardships, or will she want to return to a stable life in Canada?

About the author

Kandy is from Hamilton, Ontario. She has been a registered practical nurse since 2012. Her love and passion for nursing and helping people created her desire to volunteer in underdeveloped countries. She began journaling her trips in 2017-2019. Her first book called Love, Travel, and Volunteering Caring for the World is a diary-entry style book that captures what it was like living and volunteering in Peru & Guatemala as a nurse, with dogs in Mexico & Jamaica, and with children in Thailand & South Africa. Kandy will continue to write and publish her travel and volunteer adventures when she is able to travel again. Kandy has also published her 2nd book called Shattered A True Story of Trauma and Healing. The book captures the trauma that she had been through in life, especially the most recent traumatic event, which left her dealing with PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Kandy knows what it is like to feel so alone, while trying to cope with trauma, fear, nightmares, dissociation etc. As a result, she published her healing journey, in hope that her story can help others through trauma and PTSD, and to let them know that they are not alone in what they are experiencing when it comes to trauma.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2021In Love, Travel, and Volunteering, the author takes you through her daily activities as a nurse that keeps you interested. I've always wondered what adventures happen in a nurse's life so I found it to be intriguing. She also explores doing this in different countries as well as taking care of dogs which adds to her adventures of giving and learning. Additionally, at the end of each daily entree, she includes "lesson learned" in which she shares what she ultimately learned that day. That was one of my favorite parts as they are very sweet to read and uplifting as well as a powerful sweet perspective. This is a wonderful book with sweet interesting daily adventures of the life of a nurse with a positive perspective.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2021As someone who has a passion for travel and has travelled extensively around the world, like this author has, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! She weaves in inspiring life lessons that she gained from each experience. She is a courageous soul, with a huge heart, giving of her time, knowledge & helping others in need. I also love the valuable travel tips she shares near the end of the book.
This book is colorful! You almost smell, taste and touch the exotic flavor of the many countries she visited.
If you are eager to travel the world or want to life vicariously through another’s adventures, BUY THIS BOOK! You will not regret it!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2021I'd always wondered what life as a traveling nurse would be like, and this is the book where I could vicariously live through the author. She travels to several developing countries both as a volunteer nurse and volunteering to help sick dogs. She tells us how much each volunteer opportunity cost her, how much different food items cost in each country, what she packs, and how she books her accommodations. I loved hearing about her experiences with the locals, them chatting about taboo topics such as "white Africans," and the moments she was scared or changed her perspective on life. A cute read where you can temporarily travel overseas with the author and get a taste of living and volunteering abroad. Recommended for anyone who is interested in traveling, other cultures, and life lessons.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021The book, “Love, Travel & Volunteering” is a travel journal though the eyes of a solo traveller, adventurer & volunteer, Kandy Ostrosky.
The author heads to different countries around the world, from South Africa to Jamaica & many others, and spends about 2 weeks in each. She immerses herself into voluntary work & then sets aside time to go explore the local sights…. which she pre-plans months ahead.
The author documents the risks, obstacles and fears that she overcomes. She also writes about the joys, thrills and adventures she savours. For example, a strange dog bit her in Jamaica & she swam in the ocean with seals (and sharks) in South Africa.
The author provides useful tips for the solo traveler. There is a resource library at the end of the book with recommendations for hostels (she star rates them; & recommended excursions in each country.
Each chapter ends with a key lesson learned from her experience in each region.
This travelogue is a must-read reference book for those who love to travel on a budget to see the big outside world. It is recommended reading for any new traveler especially those ready to venture to all the countries that have been mentioned as visited by the author. And for those readers that love to volunteer to work in under developed communities around the world, this book is for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2022Anyone who travels abroad to volunteer is to be admired, but to pay for the experience makes it even more impressive. As a traveling nurse, the author shares her experiences, the good and less desirable, working through strange facilities and language barriers. It was nice to see that she also took advantage of her time to explore her different locales as much as possible. A nice, informative read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2021Do good and be good! I love this book and the author's down to earth manner and real-life stories! I couldn't help using one of the stories in a sermon I was preaching because of its relevance and the lesson learned (something that is soooo valuable).
What a gift to read about in a day and time where everyone remains so self-centered and the news is so depressing. THIS IS NOT THAT BOOK!!!! This is where you are uplifed and encouraged! What are you waiting for?!?! Get out - enjoy life - do good! Thank you for sharing your heart and passion for life!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2021This diary style book is meaningful to the author, a great experience for her and a great thing. to accomplish, volunteering at it's best. This reader didn't enjoy it as much. It was so tedious to read. I guess diary style isn't for me, How many sentences started with "I", (to many ,) I did ,I saw, I was, I went etc,
And didn't care for lists of clothes.things to do, how to travel ,but others might. So lesson learned diary style is not for this reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021Traveling while volunteering seems such an enriching experience! The author highlights learnings from each day of traveling in her journey throughout different countries, with different cultures and life standards. It’s impressive how many life lessons one can learn from their day by day experiences! Some of my favorites: “I never know what I have until I am forced to have less”. “Step out of your comfort zone because when you do, you could experience some of the greatest times of your life.”
An inspiration for travelers, but also for those who like reading about such faraway places and cultures.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful travelogue that makes you discover the world and learn wonderful lessons along the way!
This book is a real gem for anyone who loves learning about other countries and cultures. The author takes you on an adventurous ride through countries around the world, giving lots of vivid insights into her experiences abroad.
The book reads like an insightful diary and makes you experience each country through the eyes of the author. It is written in a very authentic and approachable way, and I not only loved reading about all the interesting experiences but also about the lessons learned that she captured from each day. Some of the ones that really stuck with me are: “Always listen to my intuition as it is almost always right”, “There are a lot of kind people in this world, and I cross paths with many while traveling solo”, “Kindness is one of the greatest things that one can offer another human,” and “Make a difference in the life of children while listening to them.”
There is so much warmth, honesty, and inspiration in her daily observations. As a world traveler myself, I tremendously enjoyed reading about countries I have visited and lived in myself and about learning about additional ones. And one of the conclusions by the author that I could relate to completely was the following:
“The more I travel, the more I have learned that I can never expect things to go as planned, especially when I am in a foreign country. Instead of becoming stressed and upset, I just laugh about the situation and often think it could be a lot worse.”
Traveling and getting to know other countries, cultures, and ways of thinking, behaving, and approaching life not only teaches you a lot of beautiful things that you can apply to your own life – but it also helps you to relativize many minor issues we might be concerned about and not take things we may be used to for granted. It opens up new horizons that can only enrich our lives.
An additional plus are the appendices of the book, including tips for planning a safe and successful trip, hostel, resort, and excursion recommendations in the various countries, a packing list, and the fact that one part of the book sales is donated to one of the projects the author is particularly passionate about.
Whether you love traveling yourself or prefer traveling from the comfort of your home, this book filled with personal travel adventures will take you on a beautiful journey around the world!

As someone who volunteers & loves travel, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, & Kandy’s heartfelt, honest recount of her travels, her desire to help others & the sincere side of it all. Her choice to take her strengths & finances to use for a wider good is so inspiring! I applaud Kandy ☺️ We need more people with such devotion to giving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Being kissed by a seal and other interesting experiences!
If you are interested in volunteering overseas, this book is a must read, with tips on places to visit and even the cost of volunteering with different organisations. It also provides tips to planning a safe and successful trip. Even if you are not planning on volunteering or traveling this book provides an interesting perspective on different countries and cultures and it is enjoyable to hear about the author’s experiences. I particularly like the bit about being kissed by a seal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring read
Author does an amazing job describing her travels and makes it feel like I went to some of these places myself. Author is clearly passionate about helping the less fortunate and her enthusiasm jumps right off the page. Would definitely recommend and hope there are more trips to read about in the future.
