"Very comical and so very relatable. If you don’t feel some pull on your heart strings reading this then you are a robot. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time!" - Danny Lilly

"You can absolutely feel the emotions in this book. The writer has clearly written it from the heart." - Karina Cox

The Gardener family suspected that their holiday would be a difficult one, given that it fell on the one-year anniversary of the traumatic events that changed everything for them. However, nobody suspected that things would go quite so disastrously wrong during that weekend away.

This dramatic and heartbreaking tale is told through the perspective of each family member. Once the narrative - interlaced with a comical subtext - unfolds through the numerous points-of-view, you'll soon realise that things are not always what they seem in both the past and present.

7 1/2 Reasons Why I Hate This World is a no-holds barred coming-of-age story that doesn't pull any punches – likely to be a relatable read for anyone who has battled to repair their own psyche.

If you like funny, thrilling, and tragic coming of age stories such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Fault in Our Stars, you'll likely love this book too.

Michael D. A. Clarke believes that by adding in his initials and speaking in the third-person, he may come across as a real writer. In reality, he's not quite sure if he is a real writer as he has only written a couple of books. I mean, he did write them - so, by definition he's definitely a real writer, right? The question should be, "Is he a good writer?" That's for you to decide. But take comfort in knowing that Michael D. A. Clarke has been writing words since he was just 5 years old and has written many words since then.

4.0 out of 5 stars A surprising coming of age story
Reviewed in Australia on March 1, 2025
Sometimes, books fall into your lap that you may not have picked up without some outside encouragement.

Sometimes they also surprise you with how amazingly impactful and emotional they are.

This was one of those books. At first, it was a bit slow and I did worry that I may not enjoy it, typically I don’t usually enjoy coming of age stories I just find them a bit too young for me.

This one surprised me. I absolutely loved this book and I shouldn’t be surprised because I love this author’s writing style. He has a way of just gripping you, and even in such a serious story his sense of humour is just top tier.

This had all the emotional punches and at one point had me sobbing on the couch. It’s also relatable at times, heavily focusing on mental health, grief and guilt.

If you’re looking for something maybe a little bit out of your confront zone and different to the normal, I’d highly recommend giving this one a go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story that will test your emotions!

This is a fantastic read that allows you to very quickly connect with the characters involved. The book re tells the same events but very cleverly, through different eyes. My perception of certain characters in this story constantly evolved as the book went on. You really feel like it has been a journey by the time you finish and understand everyone involved. I would strongly recommend this book as it combines a mixture of happiness, emotion and some downright ludicrous thoughts from an awkward uncle!!

I loved this book. I won't give anything away. Just read it.
Only one thing: too many basic grammar mistakes - the book needs a good proofing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!

My favourite books are those that you can envision, can relate too and that have feeling... This book has all three and much more!

Its clear to see that the author has written this in a very clever humorous but heartfelt way, and it caused me to reflect on my own reasons as to why I hate this world. But the relatable points and deeper insights also made me think about what I like about it too. The perfect tactic if you ask me.

Having an insight into each character perspective gives you a bag of mixed emotions throughout and I can't deny I had a few 'gasp' moments in between. A book you will struggle to put down!

And for what it's worth - I think this book makes it apparent that you are a real writer and a bloody good one at that!!
