This fantasy/adventure is sure to appeal to young readers with its realistic, often humorous dialogue, and sticky situations. The pacing is swift and certain to keep readers engaged and entertained!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2019"We were going to die." This is the first sentence on page one. Kids will love this book of adventures with a magic shovel, ghosts, gentle sibling rivalry (because Bubba nearly died once), and kids that talk like kids. Bubba and Squirt find themselves in Xi'an, China when the hole they are digging swallows them. How will they get back home? Even adults will be entertained while learning history and the meaning and pronunciation of some Chinese words as the two take on a task given by the first emperor of China. There's even a recipe for Chinese dumplings in the back of the book, a glossary, a bibliography for further reading, and maps. And who hasn't been fascinated by The Terracotta Army since its discovery in 1974? This award-winning author knows how to alternate point of view and keep the story fast-paced. I'd love to see more historical fiction by Sherry Ellis. If you have younger children, you'll want to read her children's books, as well. What a trip to China!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2020Bubba and his sister Squirt are a charming pair of adventurers. From the time they’re swept down through the earth and into Xian, China, to the end, they’re challenged. They’ve landed in a strange land among a sea of terracotta warriors. Then they must help an ancient emperor’s ghost find something he’s lost. Great geography and history bits are included in the tale that kids are sure to enjoy. This was a fun read even for someone who left children many years ago.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2018Author Sherry Ellis brings us Budda and Squirt's adventure to China through remarkable means.
Budda who is a great great grandson of a magician with remarkable powers is given the gift of a shovel that once he begins to dig to China on a whim and his sister Squirt is along for the ride. Once Budda digs passes a certain point they are taken into a bright tunnel that then deposits them into the terracotta warrior exhibit at the local museum. Once there they try to go back down the whole that they came out of and wind up talking to the ghost of China's first emperor who asks the two to search for his lost pi. This is a great book and one that I highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2019All kids have head the myth that if you dig a hole in the USA, you will wind up in China. Well award-winning author Sherry Ellis brings you there. I saw Ms. Ellis at a book signing and I decided to buy this book for my granddaughter who is a little young, at 6 years old, so I read it to her when I spent the weekend babysitting. We both loved the story... and the time spent together too. If you have a child or grandchild that you want to read a book to or have them read a wonderful adventure story on their own, I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2020Fans of the Magic Tree House series will love reading the adventures of Bubba and Squirt, who use a magic shovel to dig their way to China. As with the treehouse series, these books are both educational and fun. The author also builds in a rich backstory for the characters that gives them depth. I can't wait to read more of these books!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2018A delightful fun adventure going through, or better, falling through a hole Bubba had started to dig. He wanted to go to China. And exactly that happened as the earth gave way and they fell through, landing between the terracotta warriors.
A ghost is approaching, telling them they have to find a Pi, so that they can go home again.
Great History lesson of the dynasty of the first emperor of China.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational
With the help of a magical shovel, siblings Bubba and Squirt find themselves in China among the Terracotta Warriors and paranormal activity!
This is an entertaining, fast-paced read that will keep children engaged—it’s the perfect length, and wraps up satisfactorily, leaving room for more down the road. Educational content is well interspersed with action and well voiced characters perfectly rooted in their age. I personally love tales involving magic and the paranormal, and accurate historical content is always a plus.
The addition of a glossary of some Chinese words, numbers and names, as well as a Chinese dumpling recipe is fun and helpful. Kids will have fun practicing some pronunciation and maybe even helping mom and dad whip up some dumplings!
