Socrates was born circa 469 B.C. in Alopeke near Athens. His father Sophroniscus was a sculpter and his mother Phaenarete was a midwife. Socrates lived initially in the golden years of Pericles that saw the creation of the Athenian empire. He witnessed the building of the PARTHANON 447 B.C. and served as a hoplite warrior in the Peloponnesian war 431 - 404 B.C. Socrates remained outside of the main party politics of the city state of Athens. Socrates directed al his passion and energy into philosophy
