BIOGRAPHY
I am a retired professor. Since retirement I have turned my research into books for the public. For example, Overwhelmed: Coping with Life's Ups and Downs; Revitalizing Retirement; Too Young to be Old. My mission is to help people understand and cope with whatever transitions they are experiencing. My latest book, Too Young to be Old, addresses questions about aging: Will I outlive my money? Will I be alone? Will my relationships with my adult children and grandchildren bring joy and happiness or strife and unhappiness? Is romance still in the picture? How will I deal with either being a caregiver or being cared for? I decided to share what I learned from these interviews and from psychologists who study adult development and aging. I wanted to share what I have learned about transitions and how to deal with them. I wanted to challenge ageism and help us all come to terms with our love hate relationship with aging. But most important I wanted to suggest ways to face aging with creativity as people see the possibilities. I approached writing from two different perspectives—one as a professor of counseling psychology and second as someone demographically old. I include personal stories as well as stories from the hundreds of people I have interviewed over the years.
