John MacGregor lives alone in a tiny apartment in the south of Glasgow, robbed of his eyesight by a cruel stroke of fate.
An old army buddy arrives with a mysteriously cryptic offer; MacGregor will be paid a five-figure consultancy fee for taking part in an exercise in the north of Scotland, details of which are shrouded in secrecy. MacGregor reluctantly accepts the offer and takes a helicopter to the north of Scotland.
MacGregor learns that his friend has misled him. There is no exercise, and a frantic rush is taking place to get together a team of scientists and experts to investigate a strange and terrifying global threat. An extraterrestrial object has arrived in the Scottish Highlands, and it is draining energy and life from anything that goes near it. MacGregor's team will head into the alien artifact, hoping to find and reason with its creators.
The dead zone expands without warning. MacGregor's helicopter accidentally enters it and crashes, killing the pilot. When MacGregor awakens at the base camp the situation is worse than first thought. The partially assembled team struggle into the alien artifact, MacGregor pulled along with them.
Inside the alien artifact, survival becomes the main priority when chaos and fear overcome the team. Driven by panic, the expedition ends in murder and mayhem. MacGregor fights his way out of the dark nightmare into a post-apocalyptic world where the human race has been extinguished.
Joining forces with no-nonsense psychologist Eilidh Hunter, MacGregor heads for the one place on Earth that still holds hope, clinging to the slim hope that Heidi might somehow still be alive. But the further he travels in this cruel new world, the more horror awaits...
