From Heaven to Hell via the First Fleet.
After 85 years of penurious living for him and his ancestors, Thomas Walsh is, on Michaelmas Day, 1786, about to restore the family’s fortunes, by paying the final instalment of a long-term loan. Instead, on that day, he is falsely accused of a crime, leading to transportation to New Holland.
Not content with seeing that punishment meted on him, his nemesis sends killers after the family, to ensure that neither Thomas nor his wife, Martha, can ever return to reclaim his land.
Lashings, deprivation, bullets, and severe disfigurement attempt to crush his spirit, but they do not dampen his desire for vengeance.
