Hot, dusty and tired after a long ride on horseback Denton arrived at the Fort Laramie Pony Express Home Station expecting to find Clyde at the front desk and looking forward to resuming their occasional sexual exploits. Instead Karl, a more attractive young man, was at the counter. Soon the cowboy and the clerk were engaged in suggestive banter culminating in Karl making an obvious sexual overture: “I don’t make empty boasts. I’m a real firecracker in bed, free for handsome riders such as yourself.”Denton snorted derisively and left for the back room set up with a galvanized steel tub for bathing, knowing the previous desk clerk had carved a peephole in the wall between the two rooms. The cowboy called the desk clerk’s bluff with a strip tease facing the wall. Denton knew he won the challenge of wills when Karl exhaled loudly upon viewing Denton’s naked groin. The question remained as to who was seducing whom as both men thoroughly enjoyed the subsequent sexual encounter.
Over time, the pair became romantically involved, a developing relationship put in jeopardy by the pending termination of the Pony Express delivery service due to westward expansion of the telegraph. Denton and Karl desperately sought a solution to remaining together as pressures mounted to separate them.
