The Shelter, book 4, The New World takes place immediately after the events in book 3. Jay's life hangs in the balance after being poisoned by one of his extended family. The Shelter is under attack by members of El Chap's cartel and ISIS. Neither has been able to find a way into the shelter. The surviving members of the Army recon platoon call for help which is answered by a local militia who responds, they fight the cartel and ISIS while making an unusual payment demand to the shelter.
The world's economies collapsed when the dollar fell in value resulting in a worldwide depression. Regular currency is useless since it's based on the government's faith and good will. With the world's governments in shambles a group in Huntsville develops a new currency which leads some to think about the South rising from the country’s ashes. Jay agrees to accept the new currency, which changes the relationship between the Shelter’s families and the local towns.
Ricky has to face the families in the shelter to account for his crimes against them, and the attempted murder of Jay. He's put on trial to answer for his sins. The community is his jury. He has to answer for his crimes. Even in his punishment he plans his revenge against everyone in the shelter.
The USS Missouri is repaired and able to surprise the Chinese even though the President ordered a stand down.
The country begins to fracture from the economic stresses and high unemployment.
The New World tells the story of the shelter's families struggle to live in a world turned upside down which may result in a new civil war.
