    • What do you think about own voices representation and how well do you believe the characters represented physical and mental disabilities?

This text portrays disabled characters. Heart on Fire seeks to represent several physical and mental disabilities with the intention of being both respectful and as representative as possible. Experiences surrounding being disabled or being a close part of a disabled person’s life are subjective. While the disability representation in this text is based on my own experiences of being a disabled person and on my experiences with family members who are disabled, it is impossible to represent every person wholly because of the subjective nature of experience. Mental illness including PTSD representation, especially, is based on a condition that varies widely across the community. I have used my own experiences as well as my education in psychology to build the representation.

Why is it necessary to own the own voices representation and express the opinions above in the author's note. I think it is easy for people who live with disabilities to forget that experience is subjected and their experiences do not represent the entirety of the disabled community. We all want to feel represented and I think as a whole I was able to weave my own experiences with that of the broader disabled community. I wanted to do my own experiences and that of those in the disabled community justice. I personally suffer from several deterioration of the spine and spinal cord diagnosis as well as several chronic illnesses including pain. I also deal with PTSD and depression. I believe it is important to create stories that represent not just the struggles but the triumphs of living everyday in a body and mind that fights against you. While I am not thrilled with the way the own voices tag has been used by publishers I do believe the original intent was to remind the reader they are not alone and there are people like them creating stories that seek to represent the disabled community.

BIOGRAPHY
I am a business woman, a single mom, and published author. Emerson wrote, "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." I love those words. For me I believe the destination is not as important as the journey because it is the journey that helps to define who we are at the end. I write for me but I also write for my daughter so that she might see my journey which in turn might inspire her on her own path. For her, I want there to always be magic, I want there to always be the belief that the impossible is just inspiration, and I want there to be respect for the darkness in this world because without it there can be no light. I have been a writer my entire life, but it is only now that I have been able to be who I want to be and write both truth and fairytale while knowing the difference. I have realized the brilliance of Emerson's words, "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."
