Write it badly first—a horrible first draft makes it so much easier to 'revision' it into a wonderful story—in whatever form.

    • Why would you want to spend time writing badly? I think this is a myth--the suffering writer who writes cr*p, only to apply some alchemical process that turns the horrible draft into a bestseller.

      • Lucky you to feel that way. It probably means you write brilliant first drafts. More power to you. However, in my experience as author and writing instructor, you're in a minority. Of course, the 'write it badly first' is an extreme version of the useful advice, which is not to agonize over the first draft. But many people need the extreme version when they're agonizers.
