Last Exit to Montauk think Less Than Zero minus the drugs and sleaze, but with that same candor, the same "inside your head" walk through another person's life, meets the Outsiders, with it's personable characters and the hint of social awkwardness.  It's a love story set in Long Island during the 1980's.  Those iconic eighties, with the big hair, the boat shoes, MTV, and corded phones, and Vega draws it back into focus with exquisite detail.  He draws it up with both eyes open, without a hint of sentimentality.  The people -- his mother, who mixes Spanish and English in the same sentence, the siblings, the friends, all of it is so nicely detailed and rendered, even the characters you will hate, they are all handled with care.  Vega looks back at this first love, "B", and we fall in love with her right along with him.  We fall in love with her laugh, with the way she moves, with the way her mind works, and with her sense of humor.  She is encapsulated in this book like a photo in a locket.  We love B every bit as much as our narrator does. Every step through this book rings true.  It's like Vega filleted his soul for the world to see.

Read this book.  It will make you feel things you may have forgotten,  or things you've never known.  There is great love in this book, and great tragedy.  It's a book I'll never forget.

What People Are Saying About Last Exit to Montauk

They say you never forget your first love, and the romance recounted in LAST EXIT TO MONTAUK is one well worth remembering.

~Danielle Bukowski for Indie Reader

“A romance that begins in the heat of a Long Island summer bares two young souls to new love, intimacy, and tragedy. Highly recommended!”
– Lawrence Kelter, bestselling author of BACK TO BROOKLYN, the sequel to My Cousin Vinny

“Raw, real, and packed with heartfelt emotion, Last Exit to Montauk is a sentimental love story of a whirlwind romance that stands the test of time, spinning the perfect tale of the challenges and awkwardness of love at first sight. One minute you’ll laugh, the next you’ll reach for a tissue. Full of twists and turns, the unforeseen twist at the end wrenches your heart, leaving you breathless, and reminding us all just how precious life truly is. We all have but one life. The magic is found in living it.”
– Cheryl Bradshaw, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Sloane Monroe mysteries

“Vega’s account of first love is so authentic it’s hard to believe he wasn’t seventeen when he wrote it. Last Exit to Montauk will have you reminiscing about summers as a teenager and all the foibles and joys of those times. With references to the 1980s that ground you and an ending that doesn’t pull any emotional punches, this books keeps you turning the pages.”
– Elena Stowell, author of Flowing with the Go and co-founder of the Carly Stowell Foundation (www.carlystowellfoundation.countmein.com)

“I loved the book and cried at the end. It was a wonderful heartwarming tale of an adolescent boy and his heart. I loved the characters and could relate, as I am a fellow Long Islander. The references to the 1980s are great.”
– Nancy O’Hara, early reviewer

“It brought back some great memories of high school. I felt very ‘seventeen,’ which was a fun way to feel during the week of my fiftieth birthday. I can’t even guess how many times I literally laughed out loud. I was expecting a great book and was definitely not disappointed.”
– Karen Nelson, early reviewer

“I loved the ’80s memories of Friendly’s fribbles, Spencer’s Gifts, the music, movies, etc. I have lots of family in Long Island and grew up going there all my life, and I feel like he nailed the Long Island ’80s vibe of malls and beach days. The book has great nostalgia for me, especially given the world we live in today with constant social media and everyone on their phones. It was a great escape!”

I try to always read reviews once I have my review written, so I am going back in and adding this in my review. One reviewer said "This book was okay. I just felt that the book was a bit too long." I have NEVER EVER in my life read a book that I thought was too long. This book is 388 pages. No way on earth is that TOO LONG! But anyways..

I was hooked on this book not only from the first chapter, but before that, the description. I am a sucker for high school/first romance books, and romance books in general. The first chapter was amazing. It set the stage for the whole book for me. The way the author described the feelings that he was feeling at the supermarket. The writing in this book was really good. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Vega's work!

Thoughts:

The description the author gave this book was right up my alley. Anybody who knows me, knows I’m a sucker for high school / first love romances.

I felt like this plot and story line was a page out of a Nicholas Sparks playbook. I love Nicholas Sparks!

I started the first chapter, and holy-hell I was hooked. The way he described his feelings in that supermarket made me feel every emotion going through him when he saw ‘My Blonde,’ a women who he loved long ago.

The first chapter set the stage for the whole book for me. I wanted to know more about this girl he loved and why, years later, he was wondering if that was Her.

As far as the writing for the rest of the book, it was a lot of telling instead of showing. As a reader, you’re very inside his head, hearing everything he is thinking.

At times it was a bit overkill, but what was there was spot-on. Which means, you know, thoughts of a teenager… Most are cringe-worthy, but what do you expect?

As one amazon review said, “…it’s hard to believe he wasn’t seventeen when he wrote it.”

The author nailed all the characters in Last Exit to Montauk, which of course makes me think how close he really is to this plot line. In an author interview published on Hubpages.com, he swears it is not based on his life (although his siblings would disagree!). Interesting!

Last Words:

Just try the first chapter and see if you can put it down!

*This book was received via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*

I almost gave up when I started reading this book; I found it creepy that the main character was staring at a much younger blonde girl while ignoring he presence of his wife. I also found the writing style to seem quite immature for a seventeen year old however this may reflect his immaturity and naivety. Once the book started progressing however, I started t enjoy it more and was glad I continued. I really liked B as a character; she was kind funny and smart but also had an interesting home life and diverse interests. I also came to like the main character as the presence of B began to cause him to undergo personal development. I was also quite shocked by some of the plot twists and the ending. The ending was such a curveball; it left me in tears. The way the plot built up to it's climax was amazing and powerful. It also put the first chapter into context, making the main character seem less creepy.

Overall, this was a touching read that explored life in the North shore for Long Island in the 1980s, young love and the ramifications of tragedy on those who survive the ordeal.

Last Exit to Montauk was an amazing, beautiful, and emotional read! Remember your first love and how it felt? This book will definitely bring those memories back.

He first fell for “his blonde” in a grocery store smelling fruit in the summer of 1987. Fast forward many years later, and he finds himself in a grocery store noticing a blonde who could be his blonde’s twin. He’s thrown back into the memories and those emotions he felt all those years ago, and this begins one of the most magical love stories I have had the privilege to read.

I thought I knew which direction the story was going, but the writer took it in a whole other direction.

“Many years ago, she lit up my world when she smiled at me—my blonde.”

He lost his heart to B that summer. He had known her from school but didn’t REALLY know her. I loved the pacing of the story. I knew they both had strong feelings for one another, but I adored the way they took their time and really got to know each other. There was a mutual respect, love, and friendship between them. It made their romance all the more special to me.

I liked that the fact that the book was told strictly from his POV. Mr. Vega did a great job of connecting me with the story and characters all through the hero’s words. B’s very essence and magic leapt off the pages and straight into my heart. The secondary characters, Jean Paul, Hannah, his mother and brother were all very well-developed. Mr. Vega also did a wonderful job with the setting. I could see, smell, and feel things like I was there myself. Both the characters and setting added a depth to the story.

I’m an 80’s girl myself, so I loved the references to that time period, music, movies (The Lost Boys), cassette tapes. It took me back to my own teenage years when life was less complicated.
My favorite part of the book was the epilogue. It has to be one of the best ones I’ve read. It really wrapped things up and connected it all back to the very beginning. The title, as you will see, is to me, the focal point of the book. I will warn you that you will need tissues; it gets very emotional. But, don’t let that deter you from reading this fantastic book!

This book made me cry - in a good way - which hasn't happened in a long time. It's a beautiful story about two seventeen-year-olds who attend the same school but didn't really know each other until they met in a store during the summer. The author takes the reader on a journey as their friendship develops over a fun-filled summer and eventually blossoms into an all-consuming love. The characters are all so well developed and memorable I felt like I really knew them - they certainly became my friends – and I missed them when I finished the book. Aside from a tender romance, you’ll find adventure, humor, jealousy, tragedy, and hope in this poignant coming-of-age love story that will touch your heart . . . and the raw emotion is sure to leave you a changed person.

Sweet memories

A wonderful story of sweet young love that flooded me with memories of the 80s. It was heartwarming to watch the friendships - old and new - unfold as the characters brought out the best in each other, with nothing but hopes, love and dreams in their hearts and their future. I laughed, and I cried. Well done.

I loved this story! Right away it just had a certain feel to it. I just felt comfortable, like I was settling in with an old friend telling me a story. The narrative style POV made it all that much better.

I think this is a story all can relate to. The story of first love. And, set in a simpler time, I couldn't help but yearn for my childhood as I read. This was a beautifully written story, one you don't want to miss, especially if you came of age in the 80's!

What an excellent book!

I myself live in Long Island and work at SBU so the title of the book instantly caught my attention...I drive the very roads mentioned in the book everyday so I loved that about the story :)

By the middle I started having suspicions of how it was going to end and I was on the edge of my seat... I loved Hannah and I hoped that they would have a HEA

I would highly recommend this book to a friend!!!

This book took me back to my teenage years! I enjoyed reconnecting with my youth through all the 80's references. The story is a heart-wrenching tale, beautifully written, about the first love of teenagers. The budding romance is so authentic to real-life teen experiences, but with a hard dose of reality thrown into the mix. I don't want to give anything away, but Phillip Vega has masterfully created a story that both teen and adult readers will become lost in. Highly recommended!

What an awesome read that has you going through so many emotions while bringing back memories of your teenage yrs. I could relate to so many parts in this story of a first love during the summer months. I laughed, I got angry and I cried. I could have been in the same room as the characters, as they're so well written I could pic them perfectly in my mind. It could have been my life story during some of the book as I went through some of the same events in my youth
This is the first book I've read by this author but it definitely won't be the last.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels like taking a walk down memory lane in the 80's.

This book had me from the first page and by the end, I was an emotional wreck. In 1987 a young man meets a girl called B. What follows is a sweet story of first love set in the 80’s. The story is told entirely from the boy’s (we never learn his name) point of view and is refreshingly innocent and at the same time very real.
It’s a coming of age story of first love that is beautifully told. Vega is a talented writer who doesn’t put a foot wrong. The main characters are both real and sympathetic. This book is an easy read that will carry you along as B and the young man discover love, friendship and growing up. There is also the added bonus of the time period, I love books and films set in the 80’s so, for me, this was a great piece of nostalgia. Vega throws in references to films and music (and using pay phones) that really set the mood.
Without giving anything away, this book has some really emotional parts, you’ll need a tissue.
Loved it!

DNF. Too much inner dialogue between actual dialogue and action. Its like Kevin from the Wonder Years follows up every two lines with narration.

Hi everyone! Thanks for stopping by on this beautiful day for another book review. Today I have the pleasure of reviewing Last Exit to Montauk by Phillip Vega. I was gifted this book for my unbiased review. So let’s begin.

First, the opening is very interesting. The book is written in first person. We meet our main character and get inside of his head. There is an instant connection to what he is seeing and feeling. The character is definitely strolling down memory lane and it’s fun to watch. The author does a great job of showing the readers what goes on in the world around the character and conveying this through the characters actions. He writes in a way where the reader will feel the emotions the characters feel.

What takes place is this sweet love story between our main character and his love interest B. A girl in the supermarket sparks his conversation with the reader to tell us what led him and B to the point that they are now. The setting of the story takes place in the 80’s when pizza and Lost Boys where all the range with movie dates and friendly competition. Playful hitting represented liking someone and the person you had a crush on landed in front of you unexpectedly. Mr. Vega, portrays this elegantly and we can get a front row seat into the world wind of coming of age. The book is 388 pages long and worth the read through to the end. So curl up to a cozy corner this fall and check out this book.

Do you remember your first love? It still puts a smile on your face. The way it still attracts you. "Last Exit to Montauk" is a gateway to experience your first love again. It would take you to the adventure of the first love. It's a story of a 17 years old male who is all set to have an adventurous trip to Long Island. He thinks that he could conquer the world. On the trip, he met a girl named 'B'. He started enjoying the company of her girl mate. He had no idea where life is taking him to.

The realisation of first love, first excitement, the book is full of emotional swings. At a moment, you'll feel like laughing aloud, on the next moment, you want to cry. It's a coming age love story. It's a delight for the young readers and a reminder for the readers who had experienced their first love.

Philip Vega had described each and every emotions very beautifully that you can't resist yourself to feel the heat of that moment. He had proved that he had made the right choice.

The reading experience of this book was fantastic and I enjoyed this book so much. I assure you will also love this book. Philip Vega has put a lot of effort into this book and made this book interesting.

It’s the Summer of ’87 and love is in the air.

Sparked by a random woman in the supermarket, who was a dead ringer for his wife, a man recollects his first meeting with her. It was 1987, and they first met as teenagers in high school in the supermarket smelling citrus fruit.

The story had a hard-core setting of the 80’s. The pace was languid, but the writing was decent. I enjoyed the ambition and wit in the story, which is something I think that most readers would relate to. Even if they weren’t from the 80’s, most people would relate to a first crush or love.

A puppy love tale immersed with Latin culture and rockin’ with an 80’s theme.

The book was a teen romance all the way. The boy just couldn’t get enough of the girl, which was sweet, but I kind of wished the story would’ve picked up a little. I didn’t think that we really needed to hear the boy’s every minute thought. Perhaps a little tension in the story could’ve heightened the intensity.

All in all, I thought this book was pretty good.

DNF. About halfway through and nothing has really happened. This is thus far a very bland and typical teen romance. There doesn't even seem to be a twist. Maybe a tiny hint of a twist but I'm halfway done and too bored to continue. I don't care about the characters and they are juvenile. I know it's a teen love story but it's supposed to be told from the perspective of the guy remembering it, who is in his 50s. Vega specifically makes that point by starting the book off with the main character creepily getting turned on by a teenage girl he sees in the supermarket when he is with his wife. There is no adult wisdom or reflection whatsoever, except for externally from another teen character in a minimal way. Also, having been a child of the 80s growing up in NJ, I thought I'd at least feel nostalgia but other than the Friendly's references, the vernacular often isn't even true to the decade. For example, no one said "chillaxing" in the 80's. That was not a thing until the early 2000's. That's only one example. I can't finish.

A beautiful love story that will make you cry at the end !

The story is set up at North Shore of Long Island and is a romantic love story of two young souls. This book came with beautiful memories of my college. Love at first sight make this book more beautiful. Full of saw and sentimental emotions.

This is the story of 80s’. This kind of lively love is hard to find nowadays. This book has the capability to be a movie and I would recommend the author to release its sequel.

The characters are beautiful, you’ll fall in love with both. This is a coming-of-age story, a love story, replete with milestones, tangled emotions, and adventures that are the embodiments of first love. Not just for the young, but for the young at heart.

The cover is beautiful with a lovely title. The language is simple and easy to understand.

Phillip Vega strikes gold here! The Last Exit to Montauk is a delightful teen romance that satiates that deep 1980s nostalgia.

A pair of interracial teens fall for each other, and you are reminded of the fluttering heartbeats you had as a child when you first get with that boy or girl you had a crush on as a teenager. The unfolding passion keeps the pages turning, in this hormone-fueled romance that bonds two people.

The read is immersive. I enjoyed how we are in the protagonist's head, hearing his thoughts and experiencing his feelings. All five senses are utilized, making you feel both present and nostalgic. You'll feel happy, sad, and everything in between when you pick up this one.

Found myself talking to family and friends about this book and recommending it for their teens and themselves. Such a great approach to young love, life in the 80's, family, and challenges that young people faced then and continue to face today. This book touched on grief, drugs, first love, insecurity, friendship. You won't want to put it down. Just a good read overall.

Good easy read

Really enjoyed reading this- was easy to get into and was definitely written from the point of view of the teenager. As someone who was born and raised on Long Island, it really hit home with how life is as a kid growing up and the things we did/places we went. Definitely pulled at the heartstrings for sure. Would recommend!
