James Mace is a life-long historian and the author of thirty books, including eleven Ancient History best-sellers, and five South African History best-sellers. He penned the initial draft of his first novel, 'Soldier of Rome: The Legionary', as a cathartic means of escapism while serving in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. His works span numerous eras, from Ancient Rome to the British Empire.

The title is actually 'Crucible of Honour', although I rather dig your title as well! ;) I'm about 2/3 finished with the raw draft, and hope to have a working copy completed before I head to South Africa in three weeks. Yes, I will be embarking on a tour of the Zulu War battlefields. :) The book itself still needs a lot of work, plus I will be having my historian beta-readers give it a going over, like I did with Brutal Valour. It is also a more complicated work, as it is telling both the story of Rorke's Drift, as well as the Siege of Eshowe (which introduces a whole new cast). So to answer your question, I would say mid-May at the earliest. I apologise for any delays, but I'm certain you understand my desire to get this one right.(less)

“Only remember this: to seek justice is a good and noble thing, to seek revenge out of hatred is something that wiil devour your very soul.”
James Mace, Soldier of Rome: The Legionary

“I guess I’ve never had anyone expect anything of me before. I feel so overwhelmed at the possibility of letting these men down,”
James Mace, Soldier of Rome: The Legionary

“What’s more, the citizens of Natal began to assess and question the reasoning behind the war. The loudest voice came from Bishop John Colenso, an outspoken critic of the invasion since Sir Henry Bartle-Frere first spoke of the supposed ‘Zulu threat’.”
