Two siblings pledge their magical gifts to protect their people from the invading English, with the help of the last true Prince of Wales—after his murder.

Warrior-in-training Hyw can control the minds of animals. His sister Catrin can see the future in a drop of water. Now they are all that stand between their people and Longshank's ruthless army.

Hyw’s gift—seeing through the eyes of birds and animals—could win him a place in the Prince of Wales’ bodyguard. But when the Prince of Wales is murdered, Hyw melds with the prince’s soul, gaining his help against the English.

Hyw’s sister Catrin sees visions of death and disaster. The young nobleman she’s pledged to marry thinks his love endangers her gift. But they must work together to help prevent the genocide she foresees.

When they reunite, Hyw and Catrin must use their magical gifts to protect the prince’s brother—and each other—from the English invaders.

Spirit Sight by Marie Powell is intoxicating, electrifying, and resonates with a deep understanding and vulnerable adoration of Dramatic descriptions and gripping scenes. Marie Powell captivates you from page one with her perfect pacing, exhilarating plotting, and a command of storytelling that cannot be ignored. This book will hold everything you are hostage until, page by page, you discover how it has actually set you free. Author does a great job mixing elements of fantasy, mythology, and historical events in an interesting way. Well researched and beautifully written , Spirit Sight: Epic Fantasy in Medieval Wales is a remarkable book that should firmly place Marie Powell on every fantasy and historical romance YA reader's radar. Deft and insightful blending of young adult medieval fantasy with compelling characters.

Push through clunky expositions and choppy transitions that interrupt the cohesion of the text to discover solid character development that brings forward fantastic yet realistic and relatable realms, thoughtful engagement with the representation, or lack thereof, of race in clever use of medieval Welsh history and legend. Representation of actualized, strong queer characters is organic, not forced, and so are textual conversations around emotional wellness along with exploring history of Wales. Well-crafted allusions to established legends and other literary works are delightful easter eggs.

The descriptions are vivid. Characters are well developed and compelling. Story keeps moving. Sometimes I thought there were too many twists and turns. Otherwise, I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to what’s next by the author! If you like YA historical fantasy you need to read this. Kudos to the author for writing this masterpiece.

I had worried that this book was going to be one where it was difficult to keep track of the characters considering that it started with a cast list complete with pronunciation. I skimmed this, but I knew it wouldn't be much help to me since I have a hard time flipping back to indexes and glossaries with ebooks on my Kindle. (I love ebooks for convenience, but sometimes physical copies make things easier, but I digress.) Luckily I had nothing to worry about. Powell did a great job giving the characters personalities and identities, so I didn't need to flip back to figure out who was who and who was related to who. The names, though Welsh, were fortunately also not a problem in the slightest. I'm always happy when fantasy is easy to follow!

Back to the characters, the author did a wonderful job bringing them to life. The chapters alternated between a pair of siblings and I enjoyed this style, probably because I liked both of the characters and was invested in what was happening to both of them. I tend to like multiple viewpoint stories, anyway, but this was well done. The secondary characters were pretty well-rounded, too, which is likely why I had no trouble keeping track of who was who.

I don't read a lot of historical fiction/fantasy (usually just plain fantasy) and I wasn't disappointed in this approach to magic. It blended well with the historical aspects of the story. I don't want to get into spoilers, but I particularly liked how Hyw (one of the main characters) learned how to work both his animal-related magic and the magic that helped his prince.

The story had a nice pace and with short chapters, it sped along and kept me interested. The only minor issue I can bring up is that the end of the story felt a little rushed. I guess I wanted to know more about what happened with the characters and their magic! The story ending where it did was understandable, though, considering that Powell was working with a specific time/event in history. If there's a sequel, you can bet I'll be reading it. I'll give this four and a half stars (although Goodreads seems to only allow full stars, so I'll bump it up rather than down). I'll recommend it to readers who enjoy YA fantasy or historical fiction with a side of fantastical.

WHen I first heard Marie read a chapter of this as a work in progress, I thought, i can hardly wait to read it when finished. I never doubted its publication. Now that I finished the book, it does not disappoint. This is a spell-binding, riveting YA historical fiction alive with character, conflict and action. Definitely a blow-your-mind debut novel. Loved it!

Historical legend, magic, mythology – a superb new novel!

Canadian author Marie Powell earned her Maters degree in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia and has written forty children’s books as well as short stories and poetry in literary magazines. As a professional writer and editor, she offers writing workshops, and teaches Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. She now enters the young adult fantasy genre with SPIRIT SIGHT, the initial volume of her Last of the Gifted series.

Opening this refreshing new novel with a Character Guide, defining the cast as well as providing a very useful pronunciation guide for the Welsh names, offers the sense of the author’s respect for her young adult reading audience. The author’s choice to explore the history of Wales is also an added benefit to the library of medieval history.

The writing style of the author contributes to the synergy of weaving history with romance and fantasy – elegant yet immediately accessible to the reader, as the opening lines suggest: ‘He raised his arms, feeling bone and feather flatten against the wind, and knew himself tethered to air currents that smelled of salt and fish, somewhere off the horizon. He ran below the bird, yet his mind and the hawk’s mind moved as one. He could feel the dry December grasses beneath his bare feet, but he saw as the hawk saw: a flash of grey fur in the stubble, the swaying pattern of a tree branch. He tried to turn the hawk’s mind – his mind – to his will, and for a moment he succeeded. In the distance he could see the stone watchtower of his home at Garth Celyn, seat of the royal court of Wales…’ And so we meet Hyw whose influence on the story is immense.

The author provides a terse breakdown of the plot:1282 Wales A warrior-in-training [Hyw] can control the minds of animals. His sister [Cat] can see the future in a drop of water. Now they are all that stand between their people and the invading English army. Hyw’s gift—seeing through the eyes of birds and animals—could win him a place in the Prince of Wales’ bodyguard. But ambush and murder force Hyw to stretch his gift in unexpected ways. When the prince tries to use Hyw to spy on the invading English, they clash with old friends and ruthless enemies. Hyw’s sister Catrin sees visions of death and disaster. The young nobleman she’s pledged to marry thinks his love endangers her gift. But they must work together to prevent the genocide she foresees. Can the gifts be trusted? Will Hyw master his in time? Or will their world shatter around them? A medieval fantasy that combines magic, mythology, and historical legends with the realities of a world at war.’

Designating the novel as a Young Adult book most assuredly should not deter readers beyond that range of age: this is a solid novel worthy of the attention of a very broad audience. Marie Powell steps onto an even higher rung of the literary ladder. Highly recommended.

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.
Hawk, by Marie Powell, tells the story of Hyw and Cat, two teenaged siblings growing up in Northern Wales in 1282, when Edward I of England was invading and destroying that country. Each sibling has a special gift: Hyw can move into the minds of animals and birds, to see what they see and feel what they feel, whereas Cat can "see" events occurring far away. They are both in the household of Prince Llywelyn, the ruler of Wales, although Hyw has only recently returned there after spending some years in the court of one of the English Marcher Lords on the border with Wales. Still, he and his sister must do what they can to help the Prince defeat the enemy, even though some of those enemies are Hyw's friends. When the Prince is himself killed unexpectedly in Hyw's presence, to his surprise the boy finds that the spirit of Llywelyn has lodged itself in his mind. What the siblings must do next to protect the Prince's family becomes the stuff of legend.... This YA fantasy is rooted in real-life events and also borrows a lot from Welsh (and other Celtic) mythology, in addition to bits and pieces of Tolkien (what fantasy author does not owe a debt to him?) and other fantasy series such as Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising. As someone who created her own undergraduate degree in comparative mythology (particularly Celtic, Greek and Native American), I very much appreciated the accuracy and scholarship that went into this story, and I was also very happy to see an extensive bibliography at the end. If you know nothing of Welsh history or mythology, then this book will be a treat for you; if you know a lot, you'll probably enjoy it even more. It appears that a sequel, Hawk and Crown, is in the works, and I look forward to reading it. Recommended!

Marie Powell's reconfigured novel (formerly Hawk), a blend of fantasy and13th century Welsh history, should appeal to both teen and adult readers. Spirit Sight, Book One in The Last of the Gift series, combines shape-shifting, visions, and a spirit guide. Hyw and his younger sister Cat travel different paths as they try to use their "gifts" to help their people repel an English invasion. An informative and imaginative read.

It IS true that one should never judge a book by its cover, and as a writer and reader, I follow this advice, BUUUUUUUUUTTTTT, I can and WILL judge this cover. IT IS GLORIOUS! I have never seen, as far as I can recall, a cover THIS beautiful, I mean, LOOK at it! It’s magical, a masterpiece on its own and for the first time in Scribbles Worth I will give a rating to a cover, (maybe I’ll make a thing about this from now on), and give this cover a 10/10. AMAZING!

Props to Callum Jager. AMAZING.

So, to the book!
The book starts with maps and character references to get the attention and comprehension of the reader, which succeeds in that aspect, and the first story lines are very well put, grabbing your attention and forcing you to make questions and pay attention to the next detail, very nice.

The interactions between Cat and Hyw are heart-warming, and one can clearly feel the tight brotherly love they have for each other, and how family bonds are emphasized in the book, something rare to see these days.

Dramatic descriptions and gripping scenes will make you hold your breath as the straight-forward narrative style of the author will keep your eyes peeled. That’s something that I find unique about Marie Powell, the author, she is able to keep the pace of the whole story narrative consistent, while keeping chapters as short as they need to be, leaving the reader ever more curious and engaged as the story progresses.

Marie Powell
Although I am already an full-blown adult, as I read I could relate to the characters, specially Hyw while understanding the decisions and stances of the brave Bran, his father, and the always likable Prince, Llywelyn that made the story more interesting and gave greater depths to the story while filling it with some action and mystery.

There is a clear and stark knowledge of the Welsh culture, and it shows that the author did an EXCELLENT research for this book, which is an example to be taken to aspiring authors.

The reader will surely love the almost textbook descriptions of castles, realms and weapons, the always easy to understand and well put imagery and the twist on history that Marie Powell gave to this remarkable title of fantasy that is very well orchestrated and leaves no threads missing in the first of two book series that I totally recommend to the YA fantasy fans.

If you love fantastic yet realistic and relatable realms, and love historic tales, look no further than this jewel crafted by Marie Powell.

Pros:
Stable, consistent and well paced narrative.
Believable characters due to their uniqueness.
Great interactions between characters.
A consistent, yet unpredictable plot.
A solid ending that makes us want more.
No plot-holes detected.
Nice moral lessons here and there.

Cons:
Personally speaking, I would like more intense scenes. The scenes and plot are VERY well suited for the YA-genre and it’s great for kids and teens. So I understand the intention.

Favourite Character: Prince Llywelyn

Cover Score: 10/10

Final Score: 8.4/10

Spirit Sight (Last of the Gifted, #1)
by Marie Powell
A well researched book about the Welsh resistance to The English, King Edwards invasion. The book has many historical facts and mythology woven into the pages. The idea of the morrigan is a legend tied to the Authorian legends. Yet the Castell-y-Bere is a real place that was sold for ransom to the English, in an attempt to capture Dafydd ap Gruffydd, the last true prince of Wales. The mystery is the end and the beginning of the story. I found the characters very appealing and the history something that may help today’s youth to see that struggles they face are not new to the world but something that cycles around. I would love to share this book with a middle school english class and help them see that political struggle happens all the time and that history is full of one political group against another.

From the first page I was riveted. Immersed into the turbulent story of Hyw and Cat; siblings both blessed and cursed with amazing gifts. With equal parts myth and history, magic and love I was transported to the beautiful, and haunting Welsh landscape where war has ravaged the land and people, and these young folk must harness their abilities to save themselves, their country, and their people. The lyrical voice with which Marie writes transported me back in time, and by the end had me wanting more. A wonderful debut novel, and am excitedly awaiting its sequel.

I received an ARC copy, and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I knew nothing about Thirteenth Century Wales, nor about the Welsh struggle to maintain their independence from the English, until I opened this book. Ms Powell keeps the story moving with fast-paced plotting and rich period detail. Along the way, young Hyw and his sister, Cat, add a fascinating layer of fantasy as they learn to harness their "Gifts" in service to the Welsh cause. The authentic characters and the lush description of the breathtaking Welsh countryside make this title a must-read for young adults and adults alike. I read an ARC copy with no obligation, and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.

Not only are the characters engaging and the setting exotic...13 century Wales...this book is also well plotted. As the tension increases in the second half, I found myself eagerly reading chapter after chapter. It's a most entertaining way to learn a bit about the history of Wales. Obviously, a lot of research went into this book and I look forward to its sequel. I also very much appreciated the glossary and historical note.

Spirit Sight: Epic Fantasy in Medieval Wales is an enchanting and enthralling novel from Marie Powell. 'Charming in every sense of the word, and deeply satisfying' (Time Out), it will delight fans of mythology, and historical legends. Spirit Sight" is a sublime, intriguing and simply beautiful fairy tale, full of compelling characters that the reader is sure to find himself caring strongly for, taking a journey most unique and exciting. The story is pure fantasy - imaginative, enchanting, and magical.

I do love this story. I love the way it is written. It transported me instantly into its world and i literally finished it within a day. The language is sublime. I felt like the characters had more to tell, but then, my imagination is still thinking about them 2 days on, so maybe that's the intention, who knows. Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would definitely recommend it to any, particularly those that enjoy medieval fantasy.

My favourite part of the entire book was the ending; it was something that I did not expect at all, but it moved me. Lastly I just wanted to say that Marie Powell never cease to impress me.. I am a fan of her books and this book was definitely not a disappointment.

The blurb says pretty much about the books so I don't wanna go into detail and give some spoilers. So just trust me and grab a copy of this book. She wont disappoint you.

I was lucky enough to be sent a copy of the 'Last Of The Gifted' Omnibus, which included ‘Spirit Sight’ and ‘Water Sight’. I am delighted it included both, as I found Spirit Sight unputdownable and I was desperate to find out what happens next!
I am not a YA reader. In fact, I don't actually like the YA term, as I love fantasy and I think good fantasy should be accessible to any age group. What is key, is the power of the narrative. It needs to weave a credible world from cultures we may recognise and characters we identify with, through a setting that moves us into a world of magical possibility. In 'Last Of The Gifted' Marie Powell does this masterfully, in a way that is reminiscent of Katherine Kerr's Deverry series. Although Powell's world is more firmly based in Welsh History, whereas Kerr just draws from it the resulting narrative power is the same, though, offering the reader an absolutely immersive experience in a world saturated in magic and folklore.
As an adult reader I lost myself in Powell's masterful storytelling. For young readers, the story of Llewellyn, last Prince of Wales, set within this bloody era of British history, tells of courage, perseverance and hope. These lessons, told through the eye of two teenagers, are particularly pertinent in the unprecedented times we find ourselves in.

Engaging From Start to Finish

Spirit Sight is a story of family and loyalty in a time of war. It’s an engaging tale from start to finish with a dash of magic to add to the intrigue. Set in Wales in Medieval times, the novel is steeped in historical detail. Powell’s writing draws you in and doesn’t let you go. I especially enjoyed the magical gifts of siblings Hyw and Catrin. The author’s use of Welsh (with pronunciation) adds another layer of interest. If you’re looking for well-written epic fantasy with heart and depth, you’ll enjoy Spirit Sight.

Wales, 1282: Hyw and his sister, Catrin, are gifted. Hyw can control animals, and Catrin is a seer. But neither is prepared for the ambush on the Prince of Wales. Hyw touches the prince’s mind at the moment of his death and ends up drawing the prince’s soul into his own. With the guidance of Hyw’s uncle, he will learn to control this internal duology while gathering information on the English forces. But these gifts are dangerous and often feared. Without drawing suspicion, can Catrin convince the Welsh Princess of the death she’s foreseen before it’s too late for her people?

Powell does a great job mixing elements of fantasy, mythology, and historical conflict. The plot develops through unexpected twists and turns. Hyw is particularly well developed. He has to contend with the Prince of Wales in his head, the loyalty to his people, in addition to loyalty for his best friend and the family he fostered under, who march with the English invaders. Through Hyw, readers are treated to both the English and Welsh sides of the war. Some of the names get a bit confusing, and I found myself flipping back and forth to clarify who was who. However, Powell makes an effort to clarify names and even includes a helpful pronunciation guide and glossary. I’m impressed with her research and ability to keep the different storylines flowing. The landscape and the castles, especially, are delightful to explore. Powell’s prose has a lyrical quality, and dialogue construction enriches the cultural flavor. Overall, a meticulously researched young adult medieval fantasy with compelling characters and high-stakes action. Recommended.

Spirit Sight is one of those books that reminds me of all the reasons I love historical based fiction/fantasy. The writing was extraordinary; the Welsh language and landscapes were interspersed with real history and a gripping plot. Combined, the reader is transported to 13th century Wales, in the midst of a battle to determine the future of the lands and its people.

Hyw and his sister Cat discovered they are blessed, or perhaps cursed, with ancient powers thought to be lost to the world. Can they use these powers to help fend off the English invasion and save their beloved Wales? Or will they be shunned, or worse, by the people they hope to protect.

Spirit Sight is peppered with unexpected twists as Hyw and Cat negotiate their gifts while trying to save their family, their prince, and their country. Steeped in Welsh mythology and tied to the ancient legends of King Arthur himself, this well researched and beautifully written novel should be the next on your reading list.

Attention lovers of History and Lore - This book is the book for you! Jump into the time of Prince Llewellyn, the last Prince of Wales, through the eyes of two gifted siblings determined to aid their precious homeland in the war against the English King. Marie does an excellent job winding history with fantasy in this tale of family, country, and loyalties.

Hyw has the gift of seeing through animals eyes and Cat has the gift of spirit sight - together their gifts are even stronger and they discover they may be the key to saving Wales from the English invasion. We, the readers, follow their journeys of growth and discovering who they truly are while becoming fully immersed in the turmoil of impending invasion and war.

While this book is billed as a young adult novel, I would recommend it for all ages. I'm glad this is the first in a trilogy so I will be able to dive into this world anew!

I was able to read an advanced reader copy of Spirit Sight. I am under no obligation to review Spirit Sight, but I want to highly recommend this novel of adventure and magic in Wales in 1200 BC.
Marie Powell knows Wales. The landscape, the castles, and the characters are finely drawn and believable. The imaginative magic arts presented are very intriguing and so skilfully presented in her narrative that I was swept away to this ancient time. Powell's writing is masterful. Spirit Sight is a wonderful read.

Powell keeps the story flowing, adds tension in perfect places as well as fast-paced scenes to keep the listener on their toes, it works really well! Initially, I thought that comprehension might not translate well in the audiobook, as occasionally when there is a lot of background information to listen to one might become bored quickly but there was a quality in the plot that kept me tuned in as I listened to the audiobook.

There were issues with the audiobook, the audio cut out and there were moments where the dialogue was double-recorded and two parts of the book were being read out at the same time. But the choice of narrator was solid as he was fully competent in pronouncing the Welsh language and names being a native to Wales.

I loved how Powell incorporated real history and wove around it a tale of Kings and Princes - it felt very romantic and I did enjoy the bond between the characters and how they all interlinked. Clever writing!

This book is Young Adult but will appeal to anyone who enjoys historical fantasy. Set in the late 1200's Wales siblings Hyw and Catrin live with their parents in the northern kingdom of Gwynedd. Hwy has the ability to communicate with animals, mainly birds. He's spent the last number of years being fostered at the court of Lord Shrewsbury but has recently returned home. He's hoping to follow his father into the guards in service to the Welsh King Llywelyn. His sister, Catrin is just coming into her power of Seer. Scenes of the future appear in any liquid surface. Both siblings use their power to assist the King in his fight against King Edward I who is determined to take the Welsh lands for England. Filled with the pagentry, harshness and violence of the times, the book is a wonderful read.

This is a fascinating book, blending history and fantasy in a way which makes each seem somehow more believable. Marie Powell uses historical figures and settings to give an expert voice to her work and makes the reader believe that they could be reading an exciting history of Welsh culture rather than simply a work of fiction.
Powell’s descriptive writing is beautiful and evocative, although sometimes I feel a Young Adult audience may have preferred a slightly different descriptive to dialogue ratio.
Overall, a clever mix of fantasy and history to shed new light on a dark period of British history.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. This was a bit of an intense read and made me feel like I was there watching the story unfold in real-time. The characters whether they were main or minor were well thought out and ever present in the journey. Cat and Hyw are gifted, but it could be seen as a curse. They are believed to be the last to have these gifts. They are doing the best they can to save their home which is Wales from the English. It is a mix of history, magic, and fantasy. It is well worth the read.

The Unbelievable Made Believable

Marie Powell weaves history, fantasy, magic, and the conquest of Wales by Edward Longshanks into a seamless tale of valor and human perseverance. I became immediately engaged by Hyw’s (Welsh for Hugh) abilities to meld with animals, and his sister’s plunge into her hereditary gift of visions. Even minor characters are thoroughly engaging, and Powell’s depiction of Prince Llewellyn, the last Prince of Wales, is both heroic and heartbreaking.

Spirit Sight is an entertaining, captivating book that takes readers back in time to a land where people fight valiantly for their independence and identity against an overwhelming, brutal invader.

Don’t let the designation of Young Adult stop you from reading this heartfelt tale of kinship and kingship.
