Born and raised in the rolling Surrey downs, and following stints as an archaeologist and in publishing in London and Gloucester, I now live surrounded by moors in King Richard III’s northern heartland, working as a freelance copyeditor, proofreader and, more recently, independent author of books for children aged 10+.
My first novel, Time out of Time (pub. 2021), won the 2012 Chapter One Children’s Book Award, and my second was put on the backburner in 2013 at the announcement of the discovery of King Richard’s grave in a car park in Leicester. As a Ricardian since my teens, that momentous announcement prompted me to write about the real Richard III for older children (there being no such book available), and so The Order of the White Boar

They were sparked by the 2013 press conference announcing that King Richard III's grave had, beyond reasonable doubt, been discovered. Recognizing a unique opportunity to encourage the reassessment of this much-maligned king, I realized that my most effective contribution to that effort, as a writer of children's books, would be to tell a story of his life drawing on the original sources rather than the lies that had built up over the centuries after his death. To my surprise, as far as I could tell, this had never been done for children.(less)

What's more of a problem for me is finding the opportunity to write among all the other demands on my time. Although self-employed in terms of the 'day job', my general lack of organization means that activities expand to fill the time (not)available - add into that the need to market and promote my existing books, and it doesn't leave much time for what I love most - the actual writing. I find train journeys and holidays by far the best times to write - I can turn off the internet, not think about domestic chores and lose myself in the fifteenth century.(less)

Coming soon: ‘The Traitor’s Son’ by Wendy Johnson

I’m delighted to say that this Sunday, 14th April, sees the publication of a new Ricardian classic.

The Traitor’s Son is the debut novel of Wendy Johnson. Wendy will be known to many people as a member of the Looking for Richard Project team, which spearheaded the search for and discovery of King Richard III’s grave under a Leicester car park in 2012. A longtime Ricardian, she and her partner, Davi

“History’s greatest cold case” – did King Richard III murder the so-called “Princes in the Tower”? After this incredibly researched book, it seems increasingly unlikely that he did.
