"Brilliant and Moving. Highly Recommended." While his lost memories return, Andrew must master seemingly impossible feats, both spiritual and physical. As a dark spirit stalks Kiernan through the borderlands of life and death, he must also face the pain his actions have caused his loved ones. To save both their souls, Andrew must convince Kiernan to return to life and open his eyes to the love and beauty which had always been there.

I'm not a religious person, but I'm gonna rate and review this book regardless of my beliefs, or rather non-beliefs.

This book is brilliant. Both the story and the writing.

We're following Andrew, an autistic boy. Life dealt really shitty cards for him. He lost all of his loved ones around him, when finally at the age of 14, he couldn't take it anymore.
Meanwhile, there's another boy, Kiernan, they are the same age. Growing up, they locked eyes several times, but didn't actually met each other. And when Kiernan at last gathers the courage to take action, it's already too late.
Andrew's careless act started a ripple effect, which affected Kiernan and his loved ones greatly. From then on, there was a lot of hurt and sadness. I couldn't believe what I was reading. I cried from start to finish, with a little breathing time in the middle, but it was torture.

“When your world turns darkest, let your courage shine forth,” he said.
“Ask for help—from anyone, everyone. Sometimes it’s the bravest thing you can do.”

I started reading it around a month ago, but I had to stop several times for several reasons.

One, because of the religious stuff. There are ghost, or spirits, whatever you wanna call them, who came back to give advice and guide. And I'm not a religious person at all, I'm not a believer. And even the wording and the vibe of this book is celestial. But I'd like to believe that I'm the kind of reader who can put aside her personal beliefs and preferences and enjoy a book; and maybe even go into it with an open mind. I'm not saying this story changed me, I'm not sure a book can do that, or if it can then this would certainly be it.

Two, because it's insanely emotional. Sad and truly heartbreaking. I didn't even get to the prologue (there's a letter before it) and I was already crying. Granted, it was a Monday afternoon, and such as, it was already a shitty day and I only needed a little nudge to burst into tears.

Three , this book is just too skillfully written. It's beautiful, but also complex and at the beginning I struggled to understand what's going on. Who's who, which POV am I reading right now, when are we, which timeline? I didn't want to ruin this creation by not understanding it. So I stopped. Again.

Then I realized the problem. I'm used to books that are written in linear narrative, this however is completely different. Forgive me, I might not know the correct term, but I try to describe it.
The narrator of the story is a 14-year-old boy, he's the brother of one of the MC's. He tells us the events from each character's POV in third person, but he also adds some of he's own experience and thoughts in first person. And sometimes we jump into one of a not so significant character's head, like a police officer, or school teachers, or the Moms, and those couple paragraphs are in first person.
There's actually one timeline, but we're jumping from one place to another, from one character to another. Casey, the narrator boy, tells us what happened to each character in the same time period. Sometimes I didn't know who's head I was in, cause there wasn't a name mentioned.
Confusing, I know. And because I'm not used to this kind of writing, I was utterly lost. But then I just kept going in hope that something would click in my head, and thankfully I didn't have to wait long, I just needed one answer to an important question, and finally I was able to connect the dots. I was around 20% at the time. From then on it was all clear, but eventually I did go back to read the beginning again in case I missed something.

I don't think I ever read anything like this before. It's beautiful and compelling. This is one of those books, that you read once, and never again, because it's too much. Okay, "never" might be an exaggeration.

This is a YA story, there's no touching or kissing. But there is abuse (the worst of it off-page) and self-harm (on-page, but not detailed).

For me this book was about missed opportunities, regrets and second chances.

Prepare to be shredded with anger, pain and the angst level that rarely lets up. From page one, there is conflict, loss and darkness. The writing is jagged, chaotic and it fits the mood of this sad and heartbreaking story.

Andrew was born to pain, isolation and loss. We are invited into his mind, we are told why he is so emotionally isolated and of his brief connections with the world that were ripped from him, time after time.

Kiernan has reached into Andrew’s isolation, but their attraction is more than friendship. Together they will face betrayal, brutal injustice and the depths to which humanity will go. One will succumb to suicide. One will hover between the pain of life and an eternal rest. Because of the messages from angels, one will learn to go on for both of them.

There is a message in this read for those who can see through the heavy atmosphere and the pain that comes in so many forms. Authors E.L. Reedy and A.M. Wade joined forces to expose the loneliness and cruelties of being different, of not fitting into that cookie cutter image that allows people to be comfortable in their small worlds.

I just feel the severe heavy tension shadowed what could have come across as a truly memorable read for me. Sometimes less is more, the turmoil and tumultuous lives of these characters, the extreme circumstances faced page after page was overpowering. I could understand the story’s gravity with less and see the message for the future much more easily. I struggled with my rating. But, that said, these authors are writing from the heart with a passion that is remarkable.

I kept reading and really enjoyed the rest of the story. This is definitely not a light read. It is also a bit slow moving in some places and the time jumps/scene jumps make the story a bit disjointed. I did really like both Kiernan and Andrew. Their stories are dark and sad and stunning. http://thetbrpile.weebly.com/reviews/...

Wow. Can I just say "Wow" and leave it at that?

This was wonderful. Sad, yes. Absolutely. Heartbreaking, even. There's pain and anger, loss and fear, suffering and assault and missed opportunities. Death, both accidental and through suicide. It's not an easy read.

But, God, it was also so beautiful. Full of friendship, love and, above all, hope.

To be honest, the beginning was a bit confusing. I didn't know what was happening and there were a lot of characters introduced, but once the book got going and I got into the swing of things, I couldn't put it down. The characters jump off the page, their pain is so real, and the descriptions are poetically written.

I highly, highly, recommend this book. It's one of the most unique reads I've ever read and will stay with me for a long time.

Love, hate, bullying, anger, sadness, hope, loss and everlasting happiness. This book is marketed as a LGBTQ Young Adult, and it is that, but it’s so much more. This is not a light read, it’s a book that will have you feeling the full gambit of emotions as you get through it. Don’t be frightened off the gay label on this, this isn’t about sex, it’s about love and acceptance.

The beginning trudges a bit slowly, and the losses that one boy must face seem insurmountable - and the deaths of both Andrew and Kiernan is not the end of their story - but just a step on a different path.

The book jumps a bit, so it loses it’s rhythm in places, but the emotions that the authors take you on are real, and a powerful message of acceptance and hope. After the roller coaster ride of emotions that I went through throughout the book, I felt a sense of peace at the end. Well done. Reviewed by Cyrene

Although this book’s beginning is hauntingly depressing, taken as a whole it is inventively brilliant, and ends with an uplifting message. I felt as if I were reading a cross between literary fiction and commercial fiction, stuck between an art form and a book for entertainment, much as the characters Andrew and Kiernan are trapped between damnation and salvation.

Kiernan’s younger brother, fourteen-year-old Casey, spins a tale of utter sorrow and redemption by looking back in time with the help of omniscient angels. Andrew, a fourteen-year-old boy with autism, loses everyone he ever loved and is left alone in a cruel world with only Kiernan who secretly cares about him. Yet Kiernan’s love for Andrew comes much too late and with a high price. Bound in separate simultaneous suicides, Andrew must recall and come to terms with his past while in purgatory and Kiernan must find his way back to life while struggling away from a demon in the borderlands, for he is not quite dead nor alive. Being bound, Andrew must find the one thing that eluded him in life and use it to save Kiernan’s life: hope.

First, this book is mainly for those who aren’t sensitive to depressing or serious topics. The first third of this book is utterly full of darkness, despair, and social topics such as autism, homosexuality, death, suicide, alcoholism, bullying, and hate crimes. But this was necessary to show how hard it would later be for Andrew and Kiernan to find hope. It is very authentic when it comes to these topics, well-research or experienced. And although this book is starkly realistic, you have to be open to fantasy or religion to enjoy this book. The world building is phenomenal and packed with symbolism--landscapes of purgatory as beautifully serene, borderlands as terrifyingly dry. Also, this book is not for the untrained reader. Personally, I didn’t find it difficult to figure out the timeline, who was whom, or the shifts into other characters’ heads, but I can see how some readers might get lost. The narrator often uses foreshadowing to help readers figure out what is going on while it cushions the blow since readers can surmise what events could follow.

Although some might have to read carefully, this unique narrative style is actually what I liked most about this book: a boy from the fringes of the action telling a story but given direct information from celestial beings. Casey’s first-person account gives readers a personal experience and yet we get that all omniscient god-like detail of others’ thoughts. The style of the prose itself was incredible as well, pushing the boundaries towards literary fiction—almost modern in its straightforward tone and yet post-modern in its disjointed, shifting narration. And yet, there are these times of heightened emotion, with poetic descriptions and profound realizations that shake you to your core, mind blown.

If you like a cross between fantasy and reality and don’t quake in the face of sadness, then this book is a must read. It is a mind-blowing book you’ll likely never forget.

I was given this ARC by the publisher and BookSprout in exchange for an honest review.

The writing. I don't even know what to say. It was like nothing I've ever read. It was exceptional. As cliche and rote as this sounds, I feel like I've transcended some level of knowledge now that I've read this. This book shows love and hate and fear and anger and truth and light in the most heartbreaking courageous way.

Andrew has Autism and has lost his father, his mother, his uncle, his best friend. He's waiting for the day to finally join them. Kiernan has just been outed to his school and is the victim of an unfathomable hate crime. They both decide that everyone around them would be better off without them, thus ending their lives on the same night.

But fate and destiny and a higher being has other plans. Andrew's family shows Andrew the meaning of life and why we are here on Earth. They give Andrew the keys to help him help Kiernan understand that more people love him and that hope is everything.

Read this book. You won't regret.

Goodness! If there was ever a book I wish to give more than 5 stars to, it would be this one.

This book is heartbreaking yet filled with so much love between these characters that you can't help but feel these powerful emotions the characters display.
While reading this book, I couldn't help but hear what my mother used to tell me about suicide growing up. She used to tell me it was a selfish act in a way because we take ourselves out of the equation and fail to realize the pain we will leave those that love us behind.

For Kiernan this is his case. After everything he suffers on Halloween night at the hands of his classmates, including a possible betrayal by Andrew, he tries take his life. But he's left more in a comatose state and is left in between to watch how his actions have caused his loved ones pain and sorrow.

Andrew is a young autistic teenager who sadly has lost everyone he's loved from the minute he was born (his father) to the lost of his soulmate Michael. He's basically shut himself down to love and friendship. When he feels he can no longer take the lose and loneliness he too ends his life. However, instead of meeting with loved ones like he thought he might, Andrew is stuck in Purgatory and must go through tasks to help convince Kiernan return to his life.

The writing style of this book is one that is different from any I've read before. The main story is Casey (Kiernan's younger brother) recounting the details with the help of angels. But because it's told as a story from Casey there are also parts in first person from his own perspective as well as other side characters like a doctor, Billy, and the father.

This was a heart wrenching book about what happens to those we love after someone has taken their own life.. Andrew a sweet young autistic boy who has tragically lost everyone he loved and just couldn't take it anymore and the friend that he had and just didn't know it yet . Kiernan who both tragically take their own lives . To save both of their souls Andrew must help Kiernan fight for his life and open his eyes and come back to the love that all around him
The characters in this story are so well written and complex . There are actually quite a few characters in this story . Andrew is a sweet boy who is basically locked in his own world and has lost everyone who loved him . Kiernan has come and got into Andrew's isolation and becomes more then friends with him. Together they will fight betrayal and through ones suicide the other will come out stronger .
This book is a heavy read , I actually had to put it down a couple of time because I needed a breath and wipe a tear away . I know from the other books the authors have written that you will be taken on a very emotional roller coaster ride . The characters are well written and you can't help but care for them . There are few spots where I felt like it was confusing and a little bit repetitive and the heaviness of the story kind of took away from the story . Sometimes less is more . Over all I did enjoy this story and would recommend it for a reading challenge . Check it out

MY REVIEW:
Upon Broken Wings is a book that has so many different elements to it and all of them full of an emotional journey. This story covered so many issues dealt with in today's world bullying, hate, being gay, death, suicide, and most importantly love. The kind of love that reaches in and grabs you by your very soul and will fight the evil to show it that it can't win up against the most powerful of emotions. In the end love prevails and better things are left to come for all involved. For Andrew and Keirnan they will embark on this road and it will be Andrew who must save Keirnan. For without Andrew Keirnan will forever be lost in the bonds of evil and darkness. With a little help from a few angels Andrew may just be able to save Keirnan and show him the love he is blind to. This book for me was so much more than I ever expected it to be. Upon Broken Wings is one story that will resonate inside of me for quite awhile. Please don't overlook this book because of a LGBT label it's so much more than that and it will leave you knowing a special kind of love and needing a few tissues.

I enjoyed this book it such in depth characters that made you cheer and cry for. At first I felt overwhelmed and a little confused but as the story progressed I understood where each character was coming from. I felt a need to protect some and kick others butts. This book is extremely gripping to the piont where I stayed up late just so I didn't put it down until it was finished. So little tired here forgive any typos.
I am glad I got to arc this book because if I chose for myself I'm unsure whether I would have picked it or not. I love angels.
I say grab this book, I'm sure you will enjoy it to, even for different reasons to why I enjoyed it.

his book definitely has one of the most intricate writing styles I have ever read.. I was confused from time to time by the different points of view and switching back and forth, not in time, but in perspective. This is a book that requires some focus and concentration; it is not a casual read. The story is powerful, if heart-breaking at the outset, and touches on themes of death, sadness, bullying, pain, and despair. However, it is ultimately a story of hope and perseverance. It was not an easy read, but I was touched by the poignancy of the main characters’ lives, and I found the book inspirational by the end.

I was able to put myself into this book and witness the journey of these young people. I felt their pain, their sorrows and I cried for and with them as they struggled with their emotions. I felt their sense of loss, isolation and yearning for love and understanding. Self doubts, and tormented by hateful bigots who hate and torture those who they perceive as being different. The tragedy of the loss of young lives and the miracle of saving another through hope and love was truly inspiring. I could not stop reading this book. The ending was awe inspiring to me and left me with a sense of peace. This is a very good book and I am suggesting it to my friends and family.

This was definitely a tear-jerker. This story was a good and original read. It was about second chances, love, bullying, death, and suicide. Throw in some angels and you get some inspirational aspects. It was definitely an enjoyable read, I'm not a huge fan of tear jerkers but this story touches on alot of things that are happening today and the author did a fabulous job.

Death may be the end for most but not for them as they were bad and now they have to try to right the wrongs they did. They need to help those who were left behind. Their eyes open to what they have done and left behind. Can they make it better? See if they can

Sometimes I read a book that touches me on so many different levels that I find it difficult to explain. This story is heart-wrenching, sad, dark and also filled with love, hope and inspiration. An intense young adult book with a writing style that was difficult to follow but added to the the beauty of the storyline. A powerful story that will definitely stay with me awhile- a worthwhile read!
