When We Were Mortals

Rate this book
One woman must choose between the love of three men, as she is pulled into a world she doesn't understand as her own - stripped of her memory, and cast out into a world that does not know how to receive her. She struggles to find her identity - her worth and a place she can call her own, only to find out that there is more to her than anyone could ever imagine.

This is a tale of strength, love and perseverance, told in a way you have never seen before. Written in the voice of our heroine, as she takes you on a journey you feel is your own; searching for the truth beneath the veil of lies that create your reality and the only existence you were born to understand.

If you love stories that go beyond our reality, into the supernatural, this is a book for you.

This was one powerhouse of a novel! It runs you through a fantasy of emotions. Anessa and Zara quickly capture your attention. They leach themselves onto your heart. They are both so brilliantly broken. This book absolutely took me prisoner and refused to let me stay away from it for too long.... I was constantly thinking about it. This ending both broke my heart and made me eternally grateful to have finally read it. E.S. Mercer is one poignantly detailed and expressive author. She neatly blends and inserts these tidbits of information throughout this book so that by that time you've concluded this story the ah ha moments are staggering and most certainly eyebrow raising.

So, the blurb is up and it sounds interesting. That said, it doesn’t begin to provide a glimpse into what the story entails. What follows is my best attempt to not provide spoilers:

Anessa (protagonist) wakes confused and she immediately bails her home. Her quest for answers leads her to a Gypsy camp where she meets her soon-to-be bestie, Zara. Together they land a job at a university (cooking and cleaning). One day, Anessa bumps into a professor, Ryan, who feels strong attractions, as Anessa reminds him of an important person from his past. Oh, this also sorta starts a battle for humanity. Realms, God(s), magicians, immortals, a sin-eater, forbidden knowledge and love, betrayal, and twists and turns fill the pages.

I am far from religious, but if you have a basic understanding of Adam and Eve and Christianity, you will find numerous parallels, mis-information/direction, and a continuance of common threads. Translation: If you are a bible-thumper, you may not want to read this tale. If you ‘just’ have a belief though – this may be a fun read. For me, the introduction of the Una Vis (all energy and creation/universe) was quite fun. Of course, having a history of misinformation to keep the masses ignorant – score.

When realms collide and power-hungry gods throw a hissy-fit, the fall-out could destroy our Earth. Luckily, there are those that would die before they let that happen.

In sum, I thought the story was pretty interesting. There is a solid cast of characters. The version of the book I read did provide some challenges. The advance copy was in major need of a good editor. Some of the syntax is clunky, which is only acceptable from a debut, self-published-author. If I read future work, I won’t be so kind. If the story hadn’t been intriguing, I’d have stopped reading solely on the lack of editing. Thus – I hope the version YOU will read is cleaned up and ready for your enjoyment.

"If you are looking for a book with a strong female lead, this is the book for you. The characters in this book demonstrate a strength that we have all looked for at least once in our life. When at a crossroads, the heroine chooses to find the strength within herself.

It is a fantasy novel, with a supernatural twist to it, but it isn't so inundated with creatures that you lose the plot. The fantasy aspect of it actual brings some of our own reality to light. It makes you think about what is around you and how you perceive what you call reality.
The love story is fun as well. She has to choose between 3 very different men. Three men that she falls in love with in various stages of her life, all while they continue to love her fiercely and without question.

You find yourself needing to be her. You forget that it isn't your life and you tell the story as if it is happening to you..."

For me, this was hard to follow and the grammar mistakes drew my attention away from the story. Interesting plot but too much jumping around and too many characters to keep track of.
