Silver Love

Rate this book
Jill, Dory, Robby, and Charlene are a fantastic foursome that embodies the varying experiences that come with being Lesbians of a Certain Age. They are vibrant and vulnerable, wise and foolish, introspective and outgoing. The close-knit friends fight aging at every turn—or just ignore it altogether. These four will never go quietly into the night, redefining life after fifty. They are the new mature woman.

But along with twenty-first-century attitudes come twenty-first-century problems. Public office candidate and retired judge Charlene is confronted by a wannabe blackmailer, Jill’s passions threaten to swamp her common sense, Dory’s best-selling book could turn out to be a national disaster, and Robby must confront the hard reality of learning that her wife may not be the woman she thought she was. Steadfast in their faith in themselves and each other, and bolstered by the rich history of their friendship, the four women struggle with twists and turns as they try to navigate a landscape generated by the actions of others as well as their own choices, proving that experience does not always pave a smooth road.

In a world where everything increasingly seems relative, these women remind us that some things don’t change—like the bedrock of relationships. Silver Love is all about love; love among friends, love between lovers, and the unexpected role of love with acquaintances who may not always be what they seem. If you can keep up, join the ride and follow these ageless heroines as they pursue their adventures in the modern world.

Josette Murray is a native New Yorker who, after more than 40 years in the deep South, feels well acculturated. (Well, as acculturated as a damn Yankee can get, and probably not enough for those native-born.) She lives in Decatur, Georgia (the Atlanta area) with her two canine exercise coaches, Reece and Piper.
She spent over 25 years in a dream career, reporting on meetings for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She reveled in actually being paid to listen to the most fascinating conversations, and still helps CDC on occasion. But semi-retirement prompted the question “What the hell do I do now?”, at about the same time that she met and fell in love with author Pascal Scott, who prompted Josette to write fiction. Now, thrilled to be part of the Sapphire Publishing family, she anticipates release of her first book with Sapphire, Silver Love, on March 15, 2019.
Josette likes to make a point in each of her books. She writes from a realistic perspective that she hopes will make her stories more relatable to her readers, while allowing the escape that fiction provides. In Silver Love, she evokes the Appalachian aphorism: “Just ‘cuz there’s snow on the roof don’t mean there ain’t no fire in the furnace!” This and subsequent books will follow four fast friends, all retired and all living their lives fully, either ignoring or battling aging during their adventures. These are stories of love, between friends and lovers, acquaintances and strangers, and even frenemies.

A satisfying read for anyone but especially for those of us who are "women of a certain age" and can identify with the mature heroines of this novel. Highly recommended.

This took a while for me to get into. I thought I was going to DNF it, but I continued and actually enjoyed it. There are four main characters, two of whom are a couple. They’re all successful and have enough to live comfortably, which is good because they are all retired and in or close to their sixties. More than that, they all have secrets. They’re telling a lot of lies to each other, or at least not being fully honest.

The strength of this novel is the friendship and love between the four women. No matter what happened, they had each other’s backs. And they’re also flawed – we know that because of their predicaments but they admit and face their problems. Sometimes it took encouragement, but that’s life. The women felt real to me. There’s also some humor. Some of the things the women do are funny. The wedding was a great conclusion and made me happy, and that’s all I’ll say about that.

Despite the slow start, I enjoyed the unfolding of the events as they occurred, whether it was Dory’s issue or Jill’s relationship. In all the mysteries, there was also an opportunity for possible new romances for some of the characters, both main and peripheral, which was satisfying. I plan to read the sequel.

This was a very interesting story, focusing on four very vibrant and unique characters.

The characters are well introduced and a little bit of their relationships with one another is revealed when they all head off to New Orleans, but ‘here come the girls’ leads to here comes the drama and the story exciting unravels from there.

Dory and Robby really struggle after Dory makes a revelation that Robby isn’t sure she can forgive, and while they are busy Jill’s finding herself wrapped up in dreams of a new ‘friend’ she had made. When they return from their trip things aren’t quite the same for any of them, and events keep developing to a point that all of them learn valuable lessons.

What I liked about this book was the overall moral. Friendship. It is something important to all of us. Having those to support us, share our lives with, and even cause hurt or be part of the drama but always be there, whether physically or just as a memory. This story perfectly captures the importance of friendship and overcoming of hurdles, and other disasters that potentially threaten it.

A very good read, nice change of pace, and thoroughly enjoyable.

This book is a bit different from what I usually read but in a good way. It is geared more towards the age group I'm about to enter. The characters are well developed and you get to see the interaction between the four friends. The main theme of the book is the friendship between the women and you witness them knowing that no matter what they have each other's back. This was a fun read and it pulled me in. The author kept me engaged with the characters and plot twists throughout. This was my first book by this author but definitely not my last.

I received the book in exchange for an honest review.

ARC rec'd through Sapphire Books for review.
I took my time reading this book, the first I've read by this author.
Ms. Murray has written a beautiful storyline about levels and depths of love and acceptance between four long-time friends and how that knowledge helps in troubled times to weather emotional storms. Life is so fragile and uncertain with daily responsibilities constantly pressing/weighty. True friendships are key in a balanced life. I look forward to more from her in the future and recommend this book without hesitation.
