A veteran author of thrilling young adult and middle grade adventure stories, Tom Hoffman received a B.S. in psychology from Georgetown University and a B.A from the now-defunct Oregon College of Art. He has lived in Alaska with his wife Alexis since 1973. They have two adult children and four amazing grandchildren. Tom has been a graphic designer and artist for over 35 years. Redirecting his imagination from art to writing, he wrote his first novel, The Eleventh Ring, at age 63.

One is my own conscious thought process, where I use logic and think up ideas. The other channel is when I close my eyes and watch my thoughts flow past. I see images which come out of my unconscious mind. I essentially enter a waking dream. The unconscious mind never gets writer's block. Ask to see ideas and it sends them. So, final answer? I close my eyes, ask to see ideas and wait till I see something cool. The unconscious mind is an absolutely astonishing source of metaphors and symbolism. Pay attention to your dreams. (less)

My favorite book so far is Orville Mouse. I love those guys -- Orville and Sophia and Proto. BTW, my grandson's name is Oliver, my granddaughter's name is Sophia. Ha! I am powerless against them! They both wanted to be characters in the books.

Best wishes to you,
Tom(less)

The Hero Path

We have not even to risk the adventure alone
for the heroes of all time have gone before us.
The labyrinth is thoroughly known ...
we have only to follow the thread of the hero path.
And where we had thought to find an abomination
we shall find a God.

And where we had thought to slay another
we shall slay ourselves.
Where we had thought to travel outwards
we shall come to the center of our own existence.
And where we had thought to be alone
we shall be with all the world.”
Joseph Campbell

“Every atom, every molecule, and every bouncing marble is exactly where it should be at every moment in time.”
Tom Hoffman, The Eleventh Ring

“The most valuable gifts in life often arrive in very strange packages.”
Tom Hoffman, The Eleventh Ring

“Blindly reaching out for his bottle of Madame Beffy’s Headache Tonic, he knocked over a vase filled with glass marbles. They fell to the floor with a great clatter. As he watched them bouncing and skittering across the floor, he had an unexpected thought. The wild, chaotic path of the marbles was not really chaotic at all. Each marble was precisely following the known laws of physical motion. He was not witnessing chaos, but order and perfection. Each marble was exactly where it should be at every moment in time.”
Tom Hoffman, The Eleventh Ring

“First, you may cause no harm to any living creature. All living things have the sacred life force within them. You will come to understand that the physical form of a creature makes no difference, and their behavior, whether you perceive it as good or bad, makes no difference either.”
Tom Hoffman, The Eleventh Ring
