I found about this book when I happened to run across a blog post by the author. The author demonstrated a lot of enthusiasm for the story, which is what truly won me over into reading it. However, the beautiful cover didn’t hurt either.

Thoughts:
There is something captivating in how the author has written this novel. Upon reading, I was immediately drawn into the story as Vesyon carries an unconscious woman, escaping some unknown danger with only Neeko, a small feline, as their companion. Vesyon is leaving the unconscious woman, Camille, with someone who is going to not only help hide her, but will also get her ‘ready’ in a year’s time. Although we aren’t quite sure what all ‘ready’ entails at this point. The only problem they are both concerned about is how much damage the induced amnesia has caused.

Even before the first chapter is complete you are aware that in this world there is not only danger and a potential rebellion, but that there is plenty of political intrigue as we learn of those with high rank are, of course, power hungry, but that there is something amiss with the High King because he hasn’t been seen in quite a while.

The main character, Camille, does indeed end up with pretty significant amnesia, which is what I like and didn’t like at times. I knew going in that there would be a memory issue given as it is in the description and part of the fun when reading the story is discovering important facts along with her. But, there were also times where this worked against the book too (for me) as I grew frustrated about not knowing who her companions were to her or if I should trust one more than the other or trust any of them. I went back and forth on this subject while reading the book wishing I understood more even when knowing half the fun is in the discovery.

Overall, it is a well written story that is easy to fall into. There is also a lot of danger awaiting our characters along with plot developments to keep the story moving. Even though I had a little difficulty with feeling as if I didn’t know enough of Camille’s past, I do believe that there are many who will love all the questions of who she is and what she brings to the rebellion. All in all, I am certain many will definitely enjoy this start to a new fantasy series.

I fell in love with this book the minute I started reading it and met the main characters. the plot is extremely engaging and exciting from the very start, making it hard for me to put it down. the world built by the author was so full of details and so well done, that it was pretty easy for me to imagine well everything that was happening in the story like if I was actually there. the world of aspera is introduce to us slowly, making me feel like I was traveling and experiencing with the characters and seeing everything with their eyes. I loved the fact that we have so many different characters with different and mixed personalities, introduced to us in a unique and perfect way. I particularly loved the main character, camille, so interesting for her dark past and her strong yet fragile personality with her weaknesses and strengths which made her more real and made me love her even more. I appreciated the fact that, not knowing who she is, camille discovers and finds herself together with the reader throughout the story and this really made me establish a deep connection with her and care for her. I've noticed some influences by the lord of the rings and the throne of glass series and I loved with all of my heart the various topics the author wanted to include in the story such as: family, love, finding our true self, trust, loyalty and friendship. the ending was extremely good and left me with shock, wanting absolutely to continue on with the series. so basically I don't know what to do now with my life. overall, I really loved this book and I would recommend it 100% 💛

It was a spectacular read with intricate descriptions that I adored. I love a well written book that invokes the use of all senses and I felt like I was there.
For my personal taste, there was a little too much of fighting elements and I'm not entirely sure I like cliffhangers to be honest.
However, Jessie is a master of manipulating words to the point that I somewhat enjoyed even the elements I personally don't normally like.
I would recommend if you'd like to submerge yourself into a whole new exciting and dangerous world with many unknowns.

Wow, this book truly rocked my world! First of all, the world building was utterly phenomenal. Aspera was unlike any other realm I have traveled to. The way things were described was majestic and magical, while still allowing the reader to form their own opinion about things. The action was fantastic! I literally gasped, laughed, and had heart palpitations while reading this absolute gem! (Especially during the ending!)
I love the storyline involving a protagonist that has lost their memory yet is still able to retain those instinctive reflexes. The author makes it fresh and unique! Camille is a warrior, one of the best heroines I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Theo and Vesyon were equally as memorable. I loved the broody, serious nature of Vesyon and thought it paired nicely with Theo’s more rambunctious attitude. The way these two fit together with Camille was completely perfect! Kudos to J. McSpadden for crafting such realistic characters. I loved their witty dialogue and their scenes were powerful and… just epic. I found the way the story was revealed to be fascinating. There was a tinge of mystery and the action did not stop! Count me in as a dedicated member and fan of the rogue rebellion. Bring on the next book!

This book was awesome from the start! Full of action, intrigue, and intricate world building. I really liked the concept of a main character with a dark past who can't remember any of it. Camille was a badass main character and she really brought the story together.

I won this book in a giveaway from the author! All opinions are my own, I was not under any obligation to read & review this.

Camille Scipio wakes up in a small village of no memory of her name or her past. Her days in Sierra Village are spent training to hunt/track and use weapons along with playing with her guardians grandson, Lunci. Life is quiet in the village, but the more Camille learns about herself, the more she thinks she might be different and her past might hold the answers. When a terrible beast attacks the village and wounds someone she loves, Camille has no choice but to flee into the night with a stranger, Vesyon.

Camille soon learns that Vesyon is a Praetorian--a genetically superior warrior, and the leader of the Rogue Rebellion. As Camille's memories begin to come back, she is torn with seeking answers to her past and helping the rebellion overthrow the evil king.

This was quite a whirlwind for only being around 300 ish pages. Many times I was kind of confused as to what was happening, and what all these creatures/warriors in the world are. Some of that is due to Camille's amnesia. Part of it was also the confusing/weird relationship Camille has with Theo (another Praetorian and her lover in the past), and Vesyon, especially the relationship with Vesyon. I can't tell if he actually likes her, or is obsessed with the idea of her and how much she reminds him of her mother. Weird love-y/father vibes abound.

I always love rebellion stories and dystopian worlds. This was no exception. I loved the whole setup with the King and how he formed his own religion which ousted the matriarchal religion that was native to the people. There were so many good scenes with some of the mythology from the religion and I only hope we learn more.

As for Camille, I have a love-hate relationship with her? I think she's a badass warrior, but sometimes her impulsivity needs to take a rest. I understand many of her actions, but I'm also like GIRL there is a plan!!! Stop trying to deviate from the plan! Maybe there is a REASON you are in the dark, hmmm yes?

Anyway, when I finished I was really sad to see there isn't a second book listed yet!! That ending was evil and I have more questions now than ever, please give me the second book!

3.5 stars. Pretty quick read with a fast paced plot which is definitely refreshing. I think the idea of Praetorians is interesting and the characters/creatures were intriguing. The element that really confused me and resulted in me having a really hard time picturing the world I was in was the world building. Not that covers have to explicitly define the characters or worlds but the combination of the book cover (which is a woman in older garb with a fancy sword) and the first 100 pages of the books I was convinced we were in a fantasy, European world. 100 pages in, the main character, Camille, wakes up in a facility where there are elevators, guns, walkie talkies etc...and I was just so confused as there was no mention of being in this kind of world previously. I also felt like these elements faded in and out of the plot until the end. There are also airplane like machines and again, my brain could just not build this world I was in. That was my only real "issue" with the book.

Wow! Wow! Wow!
Praetorian Rising exceeded all expectations throughout the entire book. There was enough character building for me to become emotionally invested in these characters, yet enough freedom for me to feel like I was in J. McSpadden’s world.
Perfectly done. She made me feel like I was there with Camille and even made me feel like I was Camille. The story (don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything) was a beautiful mix of adventure, love and self-discovery.
I read the book in like two days! I couldn’t put it down!
I also love that the author didn’t spell everything out for you! There was mystery and secrecy, so that every time you flipped a page, the mysteries slowly unraveled. I seriously am so happy for this new, up-and-coming author. Can’t wait to see more stories and go on more adventures with J. McSpadden!

Praetorian Rising is a decent debut novel with evil kings and roguish rebels. McSpadden doesn’t reinvent the wheel with her fantasy story, but she does construct a world of her own with secret plots, ruling tyrants, and mysterious magic. The plot of this novel keeps the reader engaged although the characters fell a little flat for me at times. Occasionally, the prose would throw me out of the novel for a second, but the book is otherwise a quick, fun read that is bound to entertain readers.

McSpadden has great potential, and I’m interested to see her continue to grow and improve!

I was privileged to read an ARC of Praetorian Rising and this is my honest (and spoiler free) review.

Summary: Camille awakens not knowing who she is and settles into a simple life in a small village in Aspera, a nation oppressed by its king. In the blink of an eye, her world is turned on end and she’s whisked away to the central hub of a rogue rebellion. Left with few answers to her many questions, she finds herself in the middle of something big, bigger than anyone expected, and soon she’s in the midst of battle fighting alongside her new comrades against the king’s army and beasts of legend. All the while, snapshots of memory pry open her mind and that may very well unleash something worse than anything they’ve fought yet.

Short and Sweet: I loved this story. I sank into it, connected with the characters, and shuddered at the end already looking for book two. Prepare to exercise self-restraint not to peek ahead!

Long and Hard: McSpadden breathes life into her world with such realism that you can imagine standing in a forest, moss clinging to ancient bark, ice and crusted snow crunching under froze feet, the sting of sleet burning your cheeks, and all’s quiet until the madness comes under the gallop of horse hooves or screeching of beasts. This is fantasy with real world elements that the reader can easily imagine, which leaves plenty of room to take in the sass and charm of her characters. While her memories are elusive, Camille’s muscle memory and reflexes are sharp. She’s strong, stubborn, and set in her ways, despite not knowing where those ways come from. Her traveling companions, Vesyon and Theo, seem to want to protect her as much as they fear her—or, rather, they protect her because they fear her? Either way, she’s not one that needs protecting in a physical way, something they know all too well. Vesyon and Theo know Camille better than she knows herself in a quite literal sense and her interactions with them seem to define their relationships. Spunky and teasing with Theo, yet mature and serious with Vesyon, Camille is pulled to both and doesn’t know why, but their shades of intimacy draw you in and strike an emotional chord. The story is laden with an undercurrent of tension, and, much like the characters, the reader finds few moments to relax—and even then, the author keeps you on your toes. There’s something not quite right in the nation of Aspera, a fact not lost at any point, but the world and characters progress from beautiful and simple to dangerous and complicated at a maddening pace that makes your fingers itch to turn the page and your toes curl into your blankets. The secrets stack and tension mounts all the way to the chilling and breathless end that will leave you gasping for the next book.

I opened this book and was immediately taken by the world built by J. McSpadden. The descriptions are unique and yet so familiar, like walking into the world of Tolkien written from a new age point of view. Praetorian Rising isn't just enjoyable, it's deep with emotion, full of mystery and intrigue, a hint of love and character self-discovery and beyond everything it's a wild adventure. You start this book going 100 mph and it doesn't really stop until you turn the last page. To say I am anxious for more is an understatement. When does book 2 come out?
I'd put this story in the realm of readers that enjoy Hunger Games, Throne of Glass, Lord of the Rings and Red Rising. However, even as I say this, Praetorian Rising really stands out on its own two sturdy feet. I think I may have stumbled onto something incredible here and I hope that others discover this gem that I have absolutely fallen in love with.

Starting on the very first page, Praetorian Rising is full of a rich detail and twists and turns that kept me engrossed until the last. The world McSpadden created is unique - part classic fantasy, part guerrilla warfare - a place where characters hunt for their food with bows and arrows and live in fear of genetically modified super-beasts. Tried and true themes of forgotten identity and undiscovered destiny become fresh against the background of a desperately unequal rebellion of common people against an autocratic state.

This novel - which I was ecstatic to hear was only the first in a new series - has elements of The Hunger Games, of Tolkien, of Star Wars and Divergent and The Shannara Chronicles- but is wholly it's own. McSpadden adds her voice to theirs, and I for one can't wait to hear what she has to say next.

Omg! I just do not know what to say, as words can not even describe the emotions with this book. J, you have outdone yourself with this one. I am so upset that this is just being published because I want the next one so bad. When you’re talking about character development and a book with action, romance, and keeps you guessing, THIS. IS. THAT. BOOK! My full review of it will be on my Instagram page, ( @_thewriterr ) so do check it out if you wish to know more. All I can say on here is that this is the book of the year for me, worth more money then it is for.

Praetorian Rising captured my attention and pulled me in from the very beginning. The world-building in the story is lush with details, and I immediately wanted to know more about the world and the situation our main character was in. Camille enters the story with no memory of her life, adjusting to life in a small village. I was apprehensive initially of discovering facts and events along with Camille, but the story is written such that I never felt lost as a reader, even as we were discovering information about people and history through her.

The relationships in this book are vivid, and I love the character development and the way the relationships grow and change over the course of the book. Camille is a strong main character, and she has a personality that I personally felt drawn to and understood. There's a strength and courage in her that makes her a great main character and a great role model.

Praetorian Rising is a book that's earned a spot amongst my favorites, both in my Kindle folder and on my physical shelves.

I used to LOVE reading fantasy as a kid, but I have in recent years fallen out of reading the fantasy genera. Reading this book truly lit up my passion for fantasy novels again!
My favorite thing about McSpaddens writing is her incredibly rich and well thought out language. Every scentence is beautifully structured without feeling forced. McSpaddens language together with her great skills at storytelling and world building makes Praetorian Rising an amazing adventure and a wonderful novel. It feels as if we as readers only have scratched the surface of the world of Asperia with this book, and I can't wait for more!

I would recommend  Praetorian Rising to anyone who already loves fantasy novels or anyone who is new to the genera and just want to go on an advenure! The novel mixes and balances  magical and serious themes together in a way that makes this book an amazing and rewarding read for all ages!

What a world the author has created! The story hold intrigue as the plot continues to twist and turn with new mysteries. The protagonist takes you on a wild journey of self-discovery, filled with both intense and tender character moments and gritty, heart-pounding action. As more and more doors to this realm are unlocked, there only seems to be that much more to discover.

Praetorian Rising by J. McSpadden is book one in a series of four. It is an action fantasy adventure story that is aimed at the Young Adult market but I believe can be enjoyed by fantasy adventure lovers of all ages.
Camille Scipio wakes in a village one morning with no memory of who or what she is. Secrets abound all around her and for nearly a year she tries her best to fit into a village that is less than welcoming toward her. After a devastating attack on the village by a red eyed creature, Camille is whisked away by a tall, handsome and intimidating figure, to continue a journey she had no idea she had been on before.
Thrown into a situation where her memories come back in pieces, she learns of a tyrannical High King and his Regent, creatures that ravage people and infect them with a terrible virus, super strength Praetorian soldiers, a kingdom in turmoil and a love from her past. She must choose to run or fight with the people desperate to keep her safe.
This is a fast paced, action filled adventure that leaves the reader thirsty for more. So many questions remain unanswered that I was disappointed to reach the end of the book. This is so cleverly done by the author as it will absolutely have me lining up for the next in the series when it comes out next year.
The author wonderfully sets the scenery for this adventure, with rich descriptions that make the reader feel as if they are participating in the story. The characters are so well written that I journeyed along with Camille as she navigated through her uncertain present, desperately trying to come to terms with the snippets of her past that come back to her in fragments. The relationships created between Camille, the intimidating stranger and the love from her past is very well done, again leaving the reader full of questions and uncertainties.
I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure and would highly recommend it for any lover of intrigue, action, fantasy adventure and anyone who likes to unravel a story as it happens.

Okay, I'm going to start off my review with a small critique, but then end it off with what I loved about this book! So, hang in there! I thought this book was well written, especially for an indie author, but if I could give any piece of advice to the writer - it would be to cut out most of the names used in the dialogue. I felt like the characters used each other's names way too much, which was jarring and felt unrealistic since people rarely use names while talking to one another. It pulled me out of the conversations quite a bit. Other than that, I did have some issues with the love triangle dynamic that really wasn't to my taste. I thought there should have only been feelings between her and Theo or nobody haha, but I'm not going to get into that too deeply since that was moreso a personal opinion. What kept me reading this book though was the world building and descriptions! Mcspadden is very descriptive and the imagery was beautiful. I could picture the scenery, people, and creatures very well, and I felt the author did a good job using all five senses throughout the book. I loved getting lost in that world and although there were things I didn't like, her style of writing kept me going until the last page.

Praetorian Rising is a fast-paced, action packed story set in a world brimming with complex characters. McSpadden’s writing style is easy to read and flows nicely, with even pacing throughout the majority of the book.

There are many action scenes in this story which I thoroughly enjoyed, but I would like to see more depth into battle strategy, fighting techniques and weaponry.

I loved the world building and character development, and hope to see more background on these characters in book 2. However, whilst I loved Asperia, I found it difficult to ascertain what time period the story was set in due to the introduction of modern technology in a relatively old-style fantasy world.

I also found a number of grammar and spelling errors that may warrant another proof, but no real drama there.

In all, this was a fantastic debut novel that sets up a solid foundation to a promising series. I will certainly be joining the rogues for round 2!

I was so conflicted about this book. I really started resenting not knowing what was going on because the main character had lost her memory, it started to feel like a cheap device. And I couldn’t get a grasp on the world- there’s enough science to manufacture viruses but the elite warriors created use arrows and swords while normal soldiers have guns. And they have air ships like boats and underground technological bunkers but there is still a horse regiment.... Oh and there’s electricity but it’s not widely used... It just started to confuse and bother me. But worst of all, it ends on a total cliffhanger, almost more like the middle of things. Ugh.
And yet, I may well read the second book if it comes out because I am curious as to how it all ends...
I would definitely say to people- don’t read this unless part 2 is out as well.

I will say this book hooked me in pretty quickly, but it felt like it plateaued a bit as it went. Overall, the story was good, but a few things kept me from giving it a full 5 star review, one of the biggest the lack of proofreading. I give all books leeway here, editors are human after all, but when words are used incorrectly and there are multiple punctuation mistakes throughout the novel, it's distracting.

The other issue I had was with one of the romances. To keep it vague, the guy used to be in love with the MCs mom, but now he's getting romantically attached to the MC. It's... creepy. A fatherly devotion/affection could've made sense, but it definitely went too far.

If you can get past that, it's a unique look at a world where magic and technology survive side by side and a MC that struggles to reconcile her past with her present.

I bought this book based entirely on the cover and title, without prior research.

Praetorian Rising is an enjoyable romp through a well thought-out world known as "Aspera". The world is the book's strongest selling point (apart from the cover), complete with enough similarities to our world that we feel right at home.
The story is interesting and full of enough mystery to keep the reader hooked throughout. Sets up beautifully for future sequels.
I found the writing very easy to follow and read, not weighed down with too much complexity.
Only two criticisms I have (apart from the romance, but that I am leaving out of my review/rating as it is my fault for researching beforehand), are the pacing and the psuedo-modern world.
The pacing, particularly at the end, felt out of place, ending on a placid cliffhanger, rather than the aftermath of big conflict.
Whilst Aspera seems to be set in an older world, the author introduces a few modern technologies - such as guns and electricity. I did not find they added anything to the world, and instead subtracted from it, tacked on. Perhaps it'll become more important in later books.

Overall: an easy read that is enjoyable for any casual reader of Fantasy - bonus if you enjoy romance!

Camille is rescued from a dungeon and left in a village, waking to find that she has no memory of her traumatic past. When two men reappear in her life, they herald the arrival of monsters, villains and appalling flashes of past violence. But the future may hold even more revelations than her past.
McSpadden's Praetorian Rising is clearly the first installment of a proposed series with the cliffhanger that brings, but it carries enough plot mystery and intrigue to make it an entertaining pageturner.
I enjoyed the tough, yet vulnerable Camille and information arriving in memory flashes was a clever device, but I wasn't as drawn in by the two love interests. There is, however, great scope for development in future books.
A rip roaring 4 stars.

A fascinating world and story

Praetorian Rising is action-packed and full of interesting bits of world building and what happened in the main character's past. It's a fascinating mixture of medieval and modern type technologies. It easily kept me reading. There were some typos that I found distracting, but they didn't keep me from finishing the book. I look forward to the second one.

I wasn't a fan of the way the world was revealed and there were a lot of repetitious sections related to the amnesia and the romance aspects of the story. Several times I came close to relegating the book to the DNF shelf. Now I wish I had. :(

Obviously, I won't be continuing the series.
