Syrens and mermaids are probably my favorite mythological creatures, and I prefer them murderous and mysterious. In my perspective, they represent the rage of all women who remain underestimated time and time again because of their perceived fragility in mind and body. There is something unexpected simmering underneath that delicate beauty. You better watch out!

In Meraki, the syrens are dangerous and have the ability to bring even the greatest to their knees. I loved this and would have liked to see even more of this aspect. A few sea monsters make appearances, adding intense action sequences to this young adult novel full of mythology, fantasy-specific politics, and of course a romance. It’s a quick, fast-paced read with a sequel all ready to go if you so wish. Indie books for the win!!

WOW! What a book, what a wild roller-coaster of action, twists and emotions.

This mythical fantasy story is what every fantasy fan should read.

The story is unbelievable fascinating, gripping and dramatic and these mixed with a lot of humor and of course a beautiful unique love story, makes it even more mesmerising.
I love this book and couldn't stop reading it.
I was as much fascinated with the amount of the different mythological creatures and captivating events as I was with the unique writing style.

I loved Wren from the first page.
She is the most badass syren I have ever read about. She is stubborn, moody and sarcastic, but she is also selfless without even realising it.

Kellan is at the beginning a hot tempered and moody jerk, but after hearing his story you just can't be mad at him.
He is passionate about everything he does and that passion includes Wren. He knows what (and who) he wants and if he wants something, nobody can stop him.

At first glance, they are as different as they can get, but as the story unfolds their worlds and goals mingle to create a common goal.

I can't wait to read the second book in the series 😍❤

Sing loud and proud, syren!

Naomi Kelly is one to watch! This is her second book and honestly, she has just gotten better.

The story follows Wren, a syren who desperately wants to run as far away as possible from a future that has been planned since her birth. Despite having the power to lay waste to armies with just her voice, she has no desire to use her destructive powers. That is until, she is captured by the arrogant King Kellan, who plans to use her voice as a weapon.

The story is interesting and has enough twists to keep you intrigued, without being too complex for the shortness of the book itself. It is so easy for shorter stories to become too clustered, where as this keeps a good pace and rounds all it's plot points up nicely in the time given.
We also have some references to Greek mythology and I can tell this was well researched and I enjoyed the inclusion of some classic, mythical beasts and monsters!
There is a nice variety of characters, including some LGBTQ+ representation which is always amazing to see! The dialogue between characters seems natural, even though I would have enjoyed to see a bit more dialogue between certain characters to build up the relationships.

While there is a romantic element to this story, it is not so overpowering that you forget about all the other plot points. It is there as an underlining note throughout, but it doesn't overshadow every scene. It is more of a slow burn romance and it is done well. Obviously with it being a shorter story, there is only so much room for build up and relationship gains, but it does seem plausible when reading and it doesn't feel forced or rushed. So, mission accomplished there!

I will say that I think the overall writing could have done with a proof reading as there is some sentence structure or small grammar errors, but seeing as this is a self published book it is a HUGE undertaking for one person I can look past them and not let them effect my overall experience.

Huge congratulations to Naomi on this book! I only expect to see bigger and better things in your writing future.

I'll be honest: I am new to the world of sirens since I am more of a witch, wizard, demigod vibes. Whilst that limitation, this book didn't give me a hard time. I love it the moment I got a hang with the book.

The characters are lovable and Kellan! My gods, Kellan! I LOVE KELLAN TO THE CORE! Kellan is the typical brooding man I simp for and towards the end, I loved him more because of the respect he gives to Wren. And Wren's narration is fun to read because she always talks to herself (which I do often). I love how she transitioned from the girl who is unsure where she belongs to someone who found her home.

Meraki is a story of family bond, friendship and finding ones true meaning of home. If you love sirens, enemies-to-lovers, with a hint of gods and goddesses, definitely read this.

Stunning mermaid tale

I loved Meraki! Wren, the heroine, was complex, strong, stubborn, and flawed. The world was vivid and the history and mythology rich. And the romance! I can’t forget it...sweet and tender and all together swoonworthy! Highly recommend if you’re looking for a mermaid story. I’m looking forward to reading more from Naomi Kelly.

We got some kidnapping! Romance! And Syrens!

I really liked the pacing and all. It was pretty good. It had kind of pirates vibes and a bit of mythology! Which is pretty cool though.
Definitely would recommend!

This story is a syren story, so yesss mermaids!!! It is a fantasy coming-of-age story that revolves around Wren who is trying to forge her own path in life without the control from her overbearing, ruthless mother.

"I’m so used to someone else having command over my life that I do not know what would happen to me if I was given full control."

When she is captured by King Kellan who wants to use her as a "weapon" to save his family, she decides this is her chance to do something that would help save lives instead of destroy them!

As she goes along this journey, she not only discovers her true power and destiny but also love from a person she never even imagines!

"If this is to be my last night before my world comes crumbling down, then I wish to spend it with him. I long to know what it is like to be wanted for who I am, not just what I am."

This is another book that sneaks up on you! The first half of the book was hard for me to really get invested into but once we reached the halfway point, I could not put it down. I literally read this one in one sitting! My one gripe is that I felt the story was a little too short and I wanted more backstory and character development, it felt like the book started in the middle of a novel instead of the beginning.

Overall though, I really enjoyed this one!Overall 3.5

A trained eye and a certain level of stupidity is required to enter into these gates
Meraki. Ah! what could I say about this book? Loved it so much. I like Naomi's writing style even in her previous book The trials of Obsidian. Syrens have always fascinated me right from Percy Jackson and the lightning thief. Throughout Greek mythology, they are depicted as evil creatures who try to lure the passerby sailors and have been able to lure certain Heros too. Wren is a syren but a good one. now, this caught my eye. I wanted to hear her side of the story. This story was a mix of little mermaid and Serpent and dove by Shelby Maurin (if you have read that) or Maleficient.

I was really interested in going into the story and I liked it how it began but things started to get complicated in the middle. Forced or sudden romance. The usual plot of having a story and evil mother in exchange. Dethroning the evil queen and turning her people against her and reclaim the throne.

This story could have done so much better if it was explained in the right way. 105 pages or as in ebook pages, it is very short and I completely understand why she had to increase the pace of the story but she could have easily taken this story to 300 pages.
I would absolutely love to know how King Lachlan met Isuelt or many more childhood memories of Wren and Dove.
The sudden siege of Soleil Island was so confusing and things happened so fast that I couldn't comprehend much of the details.

After everything being said, this story stays with me though. I liked the plot outline and loved Naomi's writing style. Thereby, I'll absolutely pick her future works without a doubt

I almost never read YA fantasy as it is totally out of my comfort zone, but I was super intrigued by the premise of this book.

Wren, a syren, is abducted and captured for her magical powers by King Kellan. He plans to use her powers to get his family back. But with two strong, determined and powerful characters that initially rub each other up the wrong way, sparks are going to fly.

This book opens straight into the action. It is very easy reading and I flew through it. It reads like a movie in your head. With superbly drawn and well developed characters, scenes you can almost touch, and a fantastic array of personalities, this is an absorbing and captivating read. Throw in an enemies to lovers trope and you have a page turner that is difficult to put down.

Thank you so much Naomi Kelly for sending me the ARC of the first 10 chapters of this compelling story, I honestly think this is a 5 star read for me and I will definitely be picking a copy of the full book up.

Wren, a Syren is captured by Kellan, monarch and family man desperate to rescue his brother and sister who have been kidnapped.

Naomi's writing paints an engaging picture, drawing the reader in to empathise with Wren and Kellan alike.

The story grabs you from the start and has a lot to keep the reader engaged, wanting to know what happens next. Definitely a read to draw you in and give you a total escape from the real world.

Astonishing, exciting, and addictive.
Some of the words that i would use to describe my experience as I read ‘The Syren Stories’ by Naomi Kelly.
This is a definite new favourite of mine, and the continual action, love, and magic is in my opinion, the ideal recipe for a future bestseller.
If you like Sirens, Royality, Action, Love and the ‘Bound to each other trope’ then I would deeply recommend this book!🤗

I was kindly gifted this book which contains both the first book Meraki and the second book Kairos, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to read them, it was indeed an incredible experience

This is most definitely a 5/5⭐️ book in my opinion :)

Book Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3.5 / 5 stars)

Wren is fleeing from her destiny. She doesn’t want to be like her mother, cursed to murder innocent men with her song. But, when she is pulled aboard the ship of temperamental King Kellan, her plans are sent awry. Now she is forced to help Kellan get his family back, while her destiny is chasing her across the sea.

In a fast paced, gripping novel, we join Wren on her fight to take back her destiny. A powerful, sarcastic syren, the reader will be captivated by her tale. Naomi Kelly pulls from different areas of Greco-Roman mythology to create this world that guides Wren’s life: the Gods are watching, different creatures bow to their whim, and humans respect these gods with the same intent. It makes her capture, Kellan, all the more interesting as a descendent of the Gods himself. The amount of research and care that went into creating such a wonderful setting is astounding. The author deserves kudos for being able to paint this picture of the world in less than 250 pages.

I was enchanted by Wren’s story, or perhaps her “song”, until the very end. I wanted her to win; and as I hoped, she fights until the very end, not letting any one “man” save the day. This is her fight to win. This is something I always love seeing in stories: a woman fighting no matter the cost. Naomi Kelly’s ability to write fast paced and exciting battle scenes also help us to cheer for Wren. They’re realistic, leaving your heart pounding and hoping for more.

While the pace of the book helped with these fight scenes, it also impacted it negatively. The story probably deserved another 50 to 100 pages to help us really understand the world as a whole. For me personally though, the pace negatively impacted the romance that blossoms. The enemies-to-lover trope is not my favorite, and while it can work in many situations, it needs time to fester. Because of the speed of the book, we didn’t get to see Wren and Kellan’s relationship naturally evolve from captor to friends to lovers. This is of course a personal opinion, and some people will like the pace in which this unfolds, so I wouldn’t say it should prevent anyone from picking up the story.

Naomi Kelly is a captivating writer though and I cannot wait to see what else she puts out. She’s definitely on my “to-watch” list, and highly encourage everyone to check out Meraki.

If you are a YA Fantasy lover, Meraki is for you! A wonderful mythical tale of a syren who has a powerful voice, enough to destroy tons, still she has no intention in using it to wreak havoc. All she wants is to escape from her destiny, but when captured by King Kellan, ruler of the Lunar Islands her voice is use as a weapon to help save the kidnapped siblings of the passionate, volatile young King.

"My weapon is not visible, yet infinitely stronger than any blade you could wield."

Meraki is a story worth diving into!
Honestly, I have no expectations when I started reading this book. It is my first YA Fantasy novel set at sea and I don't want to be let down just because I have my hopes up, but I was fully surprised by how amazing this book turned out. I was hooked from the very beginning that I slept around 4am. Yes, that's how great the book was that I could not put it down! Naomi Kelly's writing style is addictive, the plot itself was very interesting that will intrigue every readers and it has great world-building. I must say the author did her research well when it comes to Greek mythology from the places to every creatures that was mentioned which definitely helped in building its world and made the story spellbinding. However, my concern was the characters not that they are not great, but because the story was a bit fast-paced that we have little background about them. I just hoped there was more about the characters especially Wren and King Kellan. Every character in the story could've been developed more but I still do like them. Wren was such a sassy syren and at the same time a very strong protagonist while King Kellan was all moody, a softie when it comes to his siblings and needless to say a powerful King, he's a descendant of a god after all. Moreover, the fact that Meraki is a enemies to lovers trope intensified my interest on reading it, I mean who would not get hooked with it? Especially there is a 'knife to the throat' and 'if-you-don't-behave-I-will-kill-you' scenes. I can't get enough of the thrill and romantic excitement but I think the 'enemies-to-lovers' became a bit rushed in the middle, like all of a sudden they have loved each other. I just wished the author made it more slow burn however, it was still swoon worthy! In addition, I truly appreciate that this book has a LGBTQ+ representation.

"When it comes to protecting the people I love, there are no rules decreed by any man nor god that I am not willing to break"

The romance was indeed captivating but I also love that Meraki talks about family relationship too. A gripping novel, action-packed and absorbed by its twist and turns. Furthermore, I was caught off guard by the meaning behind why the book was called Meraki, I don't want to give any spoilers but it was really fascinating! I can't wait and very much excited to read Kairos which is the second and last book for this duology. I need more of King Kellan 💖
Overall, I genuinely enjoyed reading this book! I highly recommend Meraki to all fantasy lovers and who are whipped for enemies-to-lovers trope. It was such a unique and fun read! Meraki is not your ordinary mystical 'tail'.

I received a gifted copy of this book for an honest review.

Meraki - pouring a piece of your soul into something you cherish

The book is about Wren who is a syren from Seven Spikes. She is captured by King Kellan and taken back to his kingdom, the Luna Lands. Kellan needs a syren to help him rescue his brother and sister, but when he captures Wren he has no idea what he’s letting himself in for. What then starts is a love hate relationship between the two. There’s lots of action along the way and the scenes are written so well that you feel like you’re there with them. Then the tables turn and it’s Kellan’s turn to help Wren. Wren is feisty, powerful and stubborn and she meets her match in Kellan as he is exactly like her. I loved this book, it was one I couldn’t put down. The author is new to me but I loved the book and the writing style. I wish the book had been longer and would have been happy to read more. I will be sad to say goodbye to Wren and Kellan but I know this is a book that I’ll definitely be picking up again to read. If you haven’t read it I’d strongly recommend it! 🧜🏼‍♀️

Synopsis:
“Keep an eye on her,” he says loud enough for me to hear across the deck, “Make sure she doesn’t try to fling herself overboard again. I have no intention of letting her slip away.”

That's until she finds herself being hauled upon a warlord's boat. With her life at the mercy of a young, temperamental King, Wren must decide who is her ultimate enemy. Can Fate be altered? I enjoyed this book; it was a page turner but initially a slow burn. I loved learning more mythology and lore particularly about sirens. I also enjoyed the enemies to lovers plot. Wren, our protagonist, is easy to like. She's battling common life coming of age themes like belonging and family. There are some "Little Mermaid" similarities but sirens got a lot more power! There are also some battles and unexpected plot twists that added to my enjoyment of this novel. If you enjoy reading mythology and romance novels, with lots of action, then I highly recommend "Meraki: A Syren Story" by Naomi Kelly. Thank you @indiespines for the complimentary copy: gotta love book giveaways. I'm also looking forward to the disucssion. #indiespinesbookclub. Supporting an #indieauthor is an added bonus!

I fell in love with the title of Naomi Kelly's novel "Meraki: A Syren Story" immediately, and the book itself is equally beautiful - I especially loved the map! I can't say exactly why "Meraki" (Greek for pouring your soul into that which you cherish) fits this story so well without spoilers, so you'll just have to trust me!
Meraki might be a syren story, but it's really a story of being silenced - and then finding your voice.
We are only a few pages in when our protagonist is silenced with an octopus-shaped "syren bridle" (which reminded me so much of the torturous "scold's bridle" used to silence women, it made me shiver).
Meraki reminds us that power does not necessarily come with the wisdom to use it, especially when it is inherited. It also raised questions in my mind about what it means to expand an empire "lawfully" (and exactly whose laws that might mean).
There is never a dull moment in Meraki - even when dramatic action is not taking place, were introduced to a truly epic cast of characters, presumably setting the scene for the books that will follow in the series.
I loved all of the oceanic touches and the Greek mythology - messages arrive via seagull, the pirate ritual of taking a plank from and old ship to buy a new one, the hippocampi, characters' "Ares" side, and the references to Mount Olympus. The little details about how the syrens' choir is composed. And I was delighted by the inclusion of Greek words and song, seamlessly woven into the story.

This was a great and entertaining read. It's well written, has some amazing dialog and a few memorable quotes. The pace of the story was great, it never felt boring or too slow. It was truly well done. The references to Greek Mythology were wonderful. I love it when a story was elements from Greek Mythology and especially when these are handled properly.

The plot of the story was intriguing and I did enjoy the way it all began. It grips you from the start. The characters in this story are wonderful and we get a nice mix of personalities too. As the story goes on, we learn new things about the characters and perspectives are changed. Something that I loved from this book was the LGBTQ+ representation. I didn't know it was there and it was a welcome surprise. The world building was well handled, as it didn't feel too overwhelming whenever new elements were presented.

Overall, this is a great story with great writing, wonderful characters and an intriguing plot. I can't wait to read more Naomi Kelly's work.

As a fan of fantasy novels, I was very excited to read Meraki, and I have to say it did not disappoint at all. I actually devoured it within a day because I found it so absorbing and intriguing. The premise of the book was really good, a syren called Wren is stuck under her evil mothers’ rule. Wren doesn’t want to be the monster her mother wants to make her. One day Wren is captured in a net by King Kellan and his men, with the intention to use her to get his kidnapped family back. This sets up a lovely enemy to lover trope which I know a lot of people enjoy reading. The story doesn’t focus solely on the romance that blossoms between main characters which is great, but there is an undercurrent of tension running between them throughout the book, adding suspense.

I loved that the story was inclusive, including LGBTQ+ representation, which I feel is really important. It also incorporates Greek mythology which adds another level of intrigue to the writing.

Naomi is clearly a very talented writer, her worldbuilding and character building is spot on and I felt I fell into the story after the very first page. If you enjoy YA fantasy then I would recommend this book to you 100%.

An enticing and original syren story

-Big thanks to the author for the eARC-

Wren's song is a mighty and dangerous gift that sometimes feel like a curse... She loves being a syren, able to swin through the waves, but her life in the deep sea with her mother feels more like Hel. When she's caught in the net of a warlord, her world is about to be turned upside down. She meets a young and stuborn King who now holds her life in his hands. Will she help the enemy to save herself?

I loved every word of this story! It was fast-paced, enthralling and simply impossible to put down. Forget the mermaids you know, Wren is the best one yet. I loved how the author took the myth and made it hers completely, adding some light Greek mythology to the mix. I really loved the world she created and it was a pleasure to dive in. Wren is really relatable and interesting as well. She's a strong young woman whose life isn't always easy. Yet, she does everything she can to protect her people and the ones she loves which I really admire. The story was action-packed, with short chapters that made it even more addictive. Kellan...well he might not be a syren, but he lured me in right away. I liked how sweet and sure of himself he was, but I especially liked how Wren wasn't afraid to put him back in his place when he was being arrogant or impulsive. The two of them made a perfect duo and it was super entertaining to read their story. This book is full of twists and turns, witty dialogues and thrilling magic. I couldn't put it down and once I'd finished it, all I wanted was to dive into the sequel. All in all, it was an instant favorite and I can't wait to read Naomi's next books!

I definitely recommend if you like mermaid stories that are intense and unique.

A 17 year old syren who thought she escaped from her misery that resides deep within the sea. But she is hugely mistaken. She is caught in a net by the King himself. Now her life is in the hands of the temperamental King who stops at nothing to save his loved ones.

Now first of all I really loved how the author didn't take time in the start to explain the world making and everything, instead everything was explained in the way. This book also made me want to beat the King at few points!🤣 Also I love how both our main characters went from hating each other to loving each other. Everything was so beautifully written.

A very enjoyable story!!

What happens when a syren gets caught in a king's net? She gets pulled into his mission to save his family. He, in turn, gets pulled into her world and as the two collide, they realize there is more to them than syren and king.

The characters are vibrant. The greek mythology throughout is refreshing. I loved this take on syrens and the romance is an added bonus!

Such a gorgeous book! I had a fun time swimming through the story with our sassy main character, Wren.

It's filled with greek mythology, funny dialogue, & fantastic creatures - I had fun googling what some of them were, & I was not disappointed!

The main character, Wren, is awesome. The plot is fast paced - the book is about 250 pages & is full of action packed scenes.

The love interest isn't my cup of tea! :P but hey, each to their own - I'm sure loads of others would love him!

Indiespines May book club pick. This was my 1st month participating in this book club and and picked a great month to start! I loved Wren's story. This was such a fast paced adventure that it was so easy to read. From the minute the book starts the action starts. The King needs a syren for a secret mission so he decides to kidnap one. I loved Wren's arc though out the book. She started out as an unhappy, distrustful teen but ended so much more. Can't wait to see what book 2 is about!

Having read her first book “Trial by Obsidian”, I was so excited to get stuck into Meraki, and honestly I couldn’t put it down!!
The flow of Kelly’s writing is superb and the mythological research and detail is so impressive! I was captivated by Wren the syren from the first chapter, and devoured this book in record time!

Meraki is a must read!

Following Wren's story after she is abducted from the sea.

I honesy didnt know what to expect as this wouldn't be my usual genre but I read this over 24hours as I was sucked in straight away. It's not an overly complicated plot which was great.

There is a strong female protagonist which is great to see.

I highly enjoyed and recommend Meraki: a Syren Story and would love to see it expanded into a series as there is so much backstory I'd love expanded on.
